Teachers Down Tools as NUT Orders FCT Schools to Join Strike
Public primary and secondary schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are set to shut down following a directive by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) ordering all teachers to join the ongoing strike action by organised labour.
In a statement issued by the NUT FCT chapter, the union directed teachers across the six area councils to down tools immediately, in solidarity with the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC) and the wider Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) protest. The decision effectively halts academic activities in Abuja public schools until further notice.
The strike is linked to unresolved issues of unpaid salaries, minimum wage implementation, and welfare arrears, which teachers say have persisted despite repeated negotiations with authorities. Union leaders accused relevant agencies of failing to honour previous agreements reached to end earlier industrial actions.

This latest development revives concerns over prolonged disruptions to education in the FCT. Over the past two years, recurrent teachers’ strikes have forced thousands of pupils out of classrooms, prompting complaints from parents and education advocates over declining learning outcomes.
Earlier interventions by the FCT Administration, including negotiations led by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and area council chairmen, had resulted in temporary suspensions of similar strikes. However, labour unions insist that the root causes remain unresolved, necessitating renewed action.
Parents and school administrators are now bracing for another round of disruptions, as pressure mounts on the government to urgently resolve the dispute and prevent further damage to the FCT academic calendar.
