Tinubu Launches Electric Tricycle Empowerment Scheme
Tinubu Unveils Electric Tricycle Scheme to Reduce Transport Costs, Create Jobs
President Bola Tinubu has launched the Electric Tricycle Empowerment Initiative, a flagship programme aimed at boosting youth employment, expanding clean energy transportation, and reducing transportation costs nationwide.
The President, represented by the Minister of Labour, Dr Muhammad Dingyadi, unveiled the initiative on Wednesday in Abuja, describing it as a strategic move to promote greener mobility and strengthen Nigeria’s long-term sustainability goals. He noted that the electric tricycles are projected to cut transport costs by 40 per cent, offering a cleaner alternative to fossil-fuel tricycles and helping to lower the nation’s carbon footprint in line with the National Energy Transition Plan.
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, said the initiative signals a new era for young Nigerians, particularly those in the informal sector. He emphasised that the programme reflects President Tinubu’s leadership and belief in the potential of Nigerian youth, while ensuring broader inclusion across government empowerment schemes.

President of the National Tricycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (NATOMORAS), Usman Gwoza, hailed the project as a symbol of hope for riders. He said empowering operators with electric tricycles will reduce unemployment, expand affordable transport, and strengthen Nigeria’s growing green economy by accelerating the country’s shift to electric mobility.
Gwoza also urged the government to empower members of the House of Destiny to ensure effective distribution and seamless nationwide implementation of the initiative.
