Tragedy in Lagos as Truck Kills Pedestrian, Motorcyclist in Iyana-Iba Crash

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has arrested the driver of a heavily-loaded bucket truck following a fatal accident that killed a pedestrian and a commercial motorcyclist along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway in Lagos State. The incident occurred over the weekend at the Iyana-Iba Flyover, inward the Lagos State University (LASU) main gate, a busy corridor known for heavy traffic and recurring crashes involving articulated vehicles.

According to preliminary investigations by LASTMA, the truck was allegedly speeding from the Volkswagen axis toward Badagry when it first struck a pedestrian on the expressway. Eyewitnesses said the driver did not stop after the impact and continued driving along the corridor, causing panic among other road users.

In a second and more deadly development, a commercial motorcyclist carrying a passenger reportedly pursued the fleeing truck in an attempt to force the driver to stop. However, during the chase, the truck rammed into the motorcycle, killing the rider instantly. The passenger survived the crash without life-threatening injuries. LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq described the sequence of events as a tragic escalation of reckless driving.

Operatives of LASTMA’s Night Gang Surveillance and Monitoring Patrol Team, who were on routine overnight traffic duties along the corridor, quickly arrived at the scene. They worked with other emergency responders to evacuate victims and manage traffic in the area. The body of the motorcyclist was reportedly trapped under the truck’s front tyre before it was recovered, while the remains of the pedestrian were later released to family members after identification.

The arrested truck driver was handed over to the police at the Okokomaiko division, alongside officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), for further investigation and possible prosecution. Both the truck and the damaged motorcycle were also impounded as authorities began a full probe into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and described the incident as another preventable tragedy linked to reckless driving by some articulated vehicle operators. He urged truck drivers and other motorists to obey speed limits, exercise caution, and ensure proper control of their vehicles, especially on high-risk corridors such as the Lagos–Badagry Expressway.

Bakare-Oki also reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to strengthening traffic enforcement, road safety education, and collaboration with other security agencies to reduce road crashes and improve safety across Lagos State.
