Troops Kill 12 Terrorists, Foil Attack on Military Base in Borno
Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have killed 12 suspected terrorists and recovered several weapons after successfully repelling a coordinated attempt to overrun a military base in Kirawa, Borno State.
The foiled attack occurred on Friday along the strategic Nigeria-Cameroon border corridor, where insurgents launched an assault on positions occupied by troops of the 153 Task Force Battalion and allied military formations.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Media Information Officer of OPHK, Lt.-Col. Sani Uba, said the terrorists were swiftly detected and engaged by troops, with support from members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF).
According to him, the prompt response by security forces prevented the attackers from breaching the military base.
The operation was further strengthened by real-time support from intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance platforms, as well as the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI, which provided aerial assistance during the engagement.
Uba said the fierce exchange forced the insurgents to retreat after suffering heavy casualties.

“Following the encounter, troops confirmed the neutralisation of 12 terrorists, while several others fled with gunshot wounds, as blood trails were observed along their escape routes,” he said.
The military also recovered a cache of weapons from the scene, including AK-47 rifles, rocket-propelled grenade launchers, a PKT machine gun, and assorted ammunition.
The recovery of the weapons is seen as a major operational setback for terrorist groups operating in the area, significantly weakening their combat capability.
Military sources said troops have maintained control of the area and have intensified follow-up clearance and exploitation operations aimed at tracking fleeing insurgents and recovering additional arms.
The military high command praised the troops for their courage, professionalism, and swift tactical action in thwarting the attack.
It also urged personnel to sustain the ongoing offensive against terrorist groups across the North-East, reaffirming its commitment to eliminating insurgency and restoring lasting peace to the region.
The Kirawa axis, located near Nigeria’s border with Cameroon, remains a critical frontline in the fight against Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) due to its strategic importance as a known movement corridor for insurgents.
The latest victory highlights intensified counterterrorism operations in Borno State, as Nigerian troops continue coordinated ground and air offensives to dismantle terrorist strongholds across the North-East.
