WAEC denies issuing subject guidelines for 2026 WASSCE
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has refuted claims circulating online that it directed senior secondary school students to offer specific subjects ahead of the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Acting Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, Moyosola Adeshina, described the reports as misleading and unfounded.
“We wish to categorically distance ourselves from this unfounded assumption and the information making the rounds on the said subject,” Adeshina said.

She clarified that the development and regulation of school curricula in Nigeria is the sole responsibility of the federal government, while WAEC’s role is limited to implementing government-approved policies through assessment.
“The introduction or modification of any curriculum in Nigeria is a function of the federal government. WAEC operates strictly within the established legal and operational frameworks of its host country,” she added.
Adeshina assured stakeholders that the Council remains committed to professionalism and excellence, and that all candidates sitting for the 2026 WASSCE will be assessed fairly.
She urged schools, parents, and the general public to disregard the misleading reports and rely only on official communications from WAEC for accurate information regarding examination guidelines.
The Council reiterated its dedication to upholding standards and ensuring transparency in its operations across member countries.
