DSS Arrests Sixth Suspect Linked to 2022 Owo Church Attack

Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested the sixth suspect linked to the June 5, 2022 attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, an incident in which over 40 worshippers were killed and many others sustained injuries.

Security sources identified the suspect as Sani Yusuf, who had evaded arrest for nearly four years, making him one of the most wanted fugitives connected to the deadly church attack. The arrest followed years of intelligence gathering and surveillance by the DSS.

Yusuf was apprehended in Iguosa, a community along the Powerline axis in Ovia North-East Local Government Area. Security sources said the suspect had been living quietly in the area after fleeing other parts of the country to avoid detection.

According to intelligence sources, Yusuf is a senior commander of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and played a key role in the planning and execution of the Owo church attack. After the assault, he reportedly fled to Kano State before relocating to Edo State, where he was eventually tracked and arrested.

During preliminary interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to his role in the Owo church massacre. Security sources also disclosed that he admitted involvement in other major terror operations carried out by ISWAP across northern Nigeria.

Among the attacks linked to Yusuf are the July 2022 assault on the Suleja military barracks, the Zuma Rock checkpoint attack that claimed the lives of five soldiers, as well as several kidnapping operations in Kaduna State and surrounding areas. Investigators say his confession has provided valuable intelligence on wider ISWAP operational networks.

Further disclosures indicate that Yusuf operated under the command of senior ISWAP leaders, including Abu Ikirimah, who was arrested by the DSS in 2024. Intelligence obtained from Yusuf is expected to aid ongoing counter-terrorism operations.

Meanwhile, the DSS is currently prosecuting five suspects already in custody for terrorism-related offences connected to the Owo attack. They include Idris Omeiza (25), Al Qasim Idris (20), Jamiu Abdulmalik (26), Abdulhaleem Idris (25), and Momoh Otuho Abubakar (47). The suspects are facing charges bordering on terrorism, conspiracy and mass casualty attacks.

Security analysts describe Yusuf’s arrest as a major breakthrough in the long-running investigation into the Owo church massacre and a significant boost to Nigeria’s counter-terrorism campaign. A security source said the development underscores the DSS’s resolve to ensure justice for victims and to dismantle terror networks, regardless of how long suspects remain at large.

The 2022 Owo church attack remains one of the deadliest terror incidents in southern Nigeria, drawing nationwide and international condemnation and intensifying calls for sustained intelligence-driven security operations across the country.

Police Clarify ₦100m Mistakenly Paid into IGP’s Son’s Account

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has confirmed that the ₦100 million mistakenly credited into the personal bank account of Victor Egbetokun, son of outgoing Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, was an administrative banking error and was promptly reversed. The Police emphasised that no wrongdoing or illicit payment occurred.

The clarification follows an online report alleging that the money originated from the Anambra State Government’s security vote account, prompting public concern and calls for investigation.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme, Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin explained that Victor himself reported the unexpected credit. He immediately instructed his accounts officer to reverse the funds, which was done without delay.

“He printed out his bank statement and showed me. The young man was forced to close that account. He has also written a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for investigation,” Hundeyin said, highlighting the proactive steps taken to ensure transparency.

The Police stressed that neither the IGP nor his son had any involvement in authorising or benefiting from the transaction. The funds were quickly returned to the state government’s account, confirming that the matter was a mistaken transfer, not a case of corruption or misappropriation.

This incident has intensified discussions about security vote management and the importance of strict financial controls within public institutions. The Police reiterated their commitment to accountability, transparency, and proper auditing procedures to prevent such errors in the future.

Pregnant Woman, 5 Final-Year Nursing Students Die in Ilorin‑Ogbomoso Road Crash

At least six people, including a pregnant woman and five final-year nursing students, tragically lost their lives in a fatal road accident along the Ilorin‑Ogbomoso highway in the Ote area of Kwara State. The incident occurred on Monday, February 24, 2026, sending shockwaves across their families, classmates, and the wider community.

The victims, all 500-level undergraduates enrolled in the Open and Distance Learning Bachelor of Nursing Science programme at a tertiary institution in Oyo State, were reportedly travelling to Ogbomoso to sit for their second semester examinations when the crash occurred. Several of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while others later succumbed to their injuries at a nearby hospital. Among them was a heavily pregnant student, heightening the grief and tragedy surrounding the incident.

Confirming the accident, Mrs. Rosemary Alo, the Kwara State Commandant of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), said the crash happened on the Kwara side of the Ilorin‑Ogbomoso road in the Ote area. She added that FRSC personnel are working alongside the Kwara State Command to restore normal traffic flow and manage the aftermath.

Sheikh Gumi Warns Against Airstrikes on Bandits, Backs Forest Security Service

Islamic cleric Ahmad Abubakar Mahmud Gumi has issued a stern warning to Nigerian security agencies against the use of airstrikes and aerial bombardment in the fight against banditry and forest-based criminal gangs, highlighting the risk to innocent civilians and local communities. His comments came during a Ramadan Tafsir on Tuesday night in Kaduna, where he also expressed support for the proposed Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS), a specialised force designed to tackle criminals hiding in forests.

Gumi explained that many civilians live in or around forest communities where bandits operate, making air campaigns highly dangerous. He emphasised that while tackling banditry requires firm and coordinated action, operations must avoid harming non-combatants. Protecting civilians, he said, should remain a top priority in all security efforts.

The cleric referred to the Tudun Biri incident in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, where a mistaken airstrike reportedly killed over 100 residents. Gumi described the tragedy as a painful reminder of the dangers of bombing forest zones, arguing that such tactics could worsen insecurity and fuel resentment among affected communities.

Despite his concerns about aerial attacks, Gumi urged that the NFSS must still use decisive force against bandit groups, acknowledging that criminals have become increasingly violent, organised, and sophisticated. He warned that external influences are strengthening these gangs, and if unchecked, they could evolve into terrorist organisations.

The cleric called for security strategies that would flush criminals out of forest hideouts without endangering nearby communities, emphasising the importance of precision ground operations, intelligence-led tactics, and community protection measures. He also renewed his call for dialogue and non-military approaches, insisting that sustainable peace cannot be achieved through force alone and that addressing root causes like poverty, unemployment, and marginalisation is essential.

Gumi’s remarks have intensified discussions about Nigeria’s approach to banditry, highlighting the delicate balance between military operations and civilian protection. Analysts say his position underscores the need for a comprehensive security strategy that combines enforcement with community engagement to achieve long-term stability in the Northwest and other affected regions.
