Lagos Miscreants Disguised as Policemen Rob Car Occupants on Eko Bridge

A human resource staffer at a Lagos company has narrated how some men who disguised as police officers robbed her and some of her colleagues on Wednesday.

Asking not to be named whil speaking with FIJ, she said she and three of her colleagues were in a Toyota Matrix belonging to one of them when the armed men struck.

She said they were on the Eko Bridge, towards the Costain exit, at about 6:30 am, when they saw a man in a police camouflage and four others in mufti close to him.

“The driver, my colleague, thought they were police officers and tried to reduce his pace. The next moment, the man in police uniform smashed the driver’s window with a gun,” she told FIJ.

She stated that the driver tried swerving immediately after they smashed the driver’s window, but one thief already had a knife to his chest. This was when we realised they were not police officers.”

The human resources personnel said that she tried to jump out of the vehicle where she was seated, but one thief charged at her with a knife, so she locked the door.

She said that the thief wanted to smash her window after she locked the door, so she opened it of her own volition to avoid further damage.

“He asked where my phone was when I opened the door. He took my bag, wallet, and everything he could find,” she said.

“I tried dragging my bag from him, but when he held the knife so close to me, I started begging him. While this happened, two of them were attacking my other two colleagues at the back.”

She said that she could not tell what happened, but somehow, Adedeji (not real name), one of her colleagues at the back, got out of the car. They collected his laptop and phone, she stated.

“When we noticed that Adedeji was out of the vehicle, his wife and I got out of the car and started calling his name. The traffic was easing off, but no one stopped to help us.”

The human resources personnel said that after they were free from the pangs of the incident, they reported it to officers at the Iponri Police Station in Surulere.

She said that one officer at the station asked her why they had their bags in the car instead of the boot.

“The first officer we encountered told us that this was the result of the #EndSARS protest. They later said that the place was a deadly zone. They told us gory stories about how deadly that place was, so I wondered why they had done nothing about it,” she said.

She stated that the Divisional Police Officer was compassionate in his speech when they met him. According to her, the DPO blamed the continuous robbery attacks in the area on a lack of resources.

Adedeji, a fellow commuter, whose laptop, phone, and bag were stolen by the thieves, told FIJ a similar story.

He stated that while one thief was demanding the driver’s phone, two others wanted to stab him and his wife, who were in the back seat of the vehicle.

“While I was trying to avoid being stabbed, another person opened the passenger’s door, threatening to stab the lady in the passenger’s seat,” he said.

“I cannot say how I found myself outside the vehicle. Eventually, at the end of the saga, my shirt was torn and there were stains of blood, but it was not mine. I handed my phone and wristwatch over to them.”

“My wife and the lady alighted from the car, shouting my name. I got back in the car and we zoomed off.”

He said that the robbers left with his bag, laptop and phone.

“Everything happened in less than two minutes,” he said.

When FIJ called Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos Police Spokesperson, for comments, he did not answer his calls. At press time, he had not responded to a text sent to his phone.

Lagos Govt says speed limit rules have come to stay

The Lagos State Government (LASG) has reaffirmed the legality of speed limit regulations and urged motorists to comply for the safety of all road users.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said this in a statement on Sunday by Mrs Bolanle Ogunlola, Deputy Director, Public Affairs, Ministry of Transportation.

Osiyemi said the reaffirmation of the regulation’s legality was in response to public concerns regarding the enforcement of speed limits on selected roads across the state.

He referenced Section 28(2)(a) of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law (2018), which provides the legal basis for penalising motorists who exceed prescribed speed limits.

Further clarifying traffic sign regulations, Osiyemi stressed that the Ministry of Transportation is solely responsible for determining the size, colour, and type of traffic signs in Lagos.

He explained that this measure ensures standardisation and adherence to global best practices.

“I urge the public to stop spreading false information regarding the speed limit operation.

“I reiterate that speed limit cameras, installed after comprehensive studies on their necessity in certain areas, are currently operational only on Alapere Road and Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way.

“Studies indicate the need for expansion to other areas, which will be implemented following further reviews,” he said.

Osiyemi reaffirmed that the primary purpose of installing these cameras is to ensure the safety of both commuters and motorists on the roads.

“For inquiries or clarifications, motorists and the public should visit the official Lagos State Ministry of Transportation website, verified social media handles, or contact relevant traffic authorities,” he advised.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi

Kano Gov Yusuf, Sanusi linked to Eid killings

coalition of civil society organizations under the Global Initiatives for Good Governance (GIGG) has urged authorities to launch an immediate investigation into the deaths that occurred during the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations in Kano.

In a statement released on Monday, the coalition, led by Malami Abubakar Yahaya Capenta, attributed the unfortunate events to the failure of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, to enforce the ban on the Durbar festival.

Expressing concern over the situation, the coalition questioned why the governor and the emir allegedly disregarded the directive issued by the Kano State Police Commissioner on the eve of Sallah, which was intended as a precautionary measure to protect lives and property.

The group further criticized what it described as a pattern of reckless governance, citing the state administration’s controversial demolitions of properties shortly after assuming office. According to the coalition, these demolitions led to the deaths of more than 25 innocent citizens, with another round of demolitions in Rimin Zakara recently resulting in further casualties.

It also condemned Governor Yusuf’s reported lack of remorse for these actions, stating that his public remarks reflected a troubling disregard for accountability and empathy.

While commending security agencies for their professionalism in managing rising tensions, the coalition insisted on urgent measures to ensure that both the governor and the emir are held responsible for their roles in the tragic incidents.

The group stressed that justice must prevail to rebuild public trust and prevent future instances of what it described as abuse of power.

Encouraging Kano residents to remain alert and demand responsible leadership, the coalition reiterated its commitment to advocating for justice, stating: “Our state deserves governance that prioritizes the welfare and safety of its citizens over political grandstanding and reckless displays of authority.

“The Coalition stands firm in demanding: Accountability – A full investigation into the deaths and injuries caused by these unlawful actions. Justice – Prosecution of all officials involved in violating the police ban and endangering lives. Transparency – A public explanation from the Kano State Government on its repeated disregard for human lives. We will not relent in our pursuit of justice and good governance. The people of Kano deserve better.”

‘I was offered N5bn bribe to impeach Fubara’

The political tension in Rivers State has taken a new twist as Edison Ehie, the Chief of Staff to the suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has made a shocking revelation about an alleged bribery attempt aimed at impeaching his principal.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Ehie claimed that he was offered a staggering sum of N5 billion to coordinate the impeachment of Governor Fubara.

He further stated that he possesses concrete evidence of the bribe offer, which he has stored on his phone.

“I can also open my phone to show you, in the beginning of October 2023, when they approached me with a bribe of N5 billion. It is here in my phone,

“It was for impeachment. It’s here. I have it and I have printed it and distributed it, in case, in their evil imagination, they decide to attack me. I already have a son and a brother,” he said.

Ehie said the offer was made while he was serving as the majority leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The Chief of Staff also denied claims that he orchestrated the October 30, 2023, bombing of the Rivers Assembly complex on Fubara’s orders.

READ ALSO:

The allegation was made by a former Head of Service in the state, George Nwaeke, during a press conference last Friday.

Nwaeke had alleged that he witnessed a bag of money being handed over to Ehie at the Government House to execute the operation, though he admitted he did not know the amount inside.

Dismissing the claims as false and politically motivated, Ehie said, “It is very important to clarify that I had no hand and was not part of the burning down of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

“Like everyone else, I woke up in the early hours of 30th of October 2023 to hear of the burning down of the Rivers State House of Assembly.”

Ehie stated that he had instructed his lawyers to file a lawsuit against Nwaeke for criminal libel.

“I will not join issues completely with Mr. George Nwaeke because I have already instructed my lawyers to file an issue of criminal libel against him, and I hope he is very prepared to substantiate his claims and his allegations,” he said.

He further alleged that Nwaeke had sought financial assistance from him on the same day he resigned as head of service.

Rivers State has been in turmoil since Fubara’s fallout with his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike.

On March 18, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state and suspended both the governor and his deputy.

Subsequently, on March 26, the sole administrator of Rivers State, Ibok-Ete Ibas, suspended all political officeholders in the state.
