FEC approves N28bn to augment FCT road projects

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved N28.1 billion for the augmentation of road and infrastructural projects in the Wasa District of the federal capital territory (FCT).

The council gave the approval on Wednesday in a meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Minister of the FCT, Mohammed Bello, said the augmentation was a ripple effect of inflation, which had overtaken the initial approval of N56 billion for the Wasa district projects.

“The initial contract for that project was awarded in 2014 at the sum of N56 billion but as time went by and due to inflation and some other factors, we had to vary the contract and the price to reflect current realities and that is the reason why the augmentation request was presented to council and council approved,” he said.

Bello said the total project sum was N85 billion with a completion period of 42 months.

The council also ordered the buyers of two seized properties in Lagos to pay the government the cost of the prevailing price in 2001 when they were purchased.

Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, said N18 million and N20 million were to be paid for the Lagos-based properties earlier purchased for N5 million and N2 million, respectively.

He said the government was short-paid in the transaction.

“They were properties sold as a result of prosecution for narcotics by NDLEA. So, they were proceeds of drug crimes, but the valuation process followed the NDLEA Act instead of the Financial Regulations Act. So essentially, those policy proposals were approved by the government,” he said.

“The addresses of the properties, the first one is a four-bedroom bungalow with two room boys’ quarters at Adeniyi Jones in Ikeja Lagos, and the other one was a five-bedroom duplex with two room boys’ quarters at Amadasun street, GRA Ikoyi, so they were sold for N5m and N2m respectively in 2001.

“At that time, the valuation we got was that if they were properly valued, they should have been sold for N18m and N20m respectively.”

He noted that the NDLEA Act of the time gave precedence to the directives from the ministry of justice and regulations were made according to powers under the act.

He said, “But they did not take cognisance of the procurement law and the financial regulations of the time.

“So, we are now saying, going forward, the financial regulations must take precedence. So, those are all proposals that will come as a new law when the Ministry of Finance finishes with them so that you cannot have different regulations for the disposal of assets that have been forfeited to the government. They must be subject to one superior procedure.”

The minister also said the council approved a policy recommendation to extend the usage life of government assets such as plants, equipment, land, property and machinery.

“The purpose of the policy memorandum was to seek better enforcement of the financial regulations of the government, especially the revised 2009 regulations with regards to valuation process for plants, equipment, land, property and machinery, and also how they are disposed of when they reach the end of life,” Fashola said.

“This policy is premised on Executive Order 11 that enthrones maintenance as a conscious government policy. And we think that because of that, government assets should last longer than the life cycle usually prescribed in the existing financial regulations, such as four years and nine years for other classes of machinery.

“The other context behind the policy was also to help the government manage expenditure in the face of revenue challenges on certain items of governance. For example, if you slow down the depreciation policy on vehicles, your replacement rate slows down as well.”

He added that with the new approval, the depreciation threshold for vehicles would change from four to six years.

Wike Denies ADC Was Blocked From Using Eagle Square for Convention

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed allegations that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was denied access to Eagle Square for its national convention in Abuja, insisting that no formal application was properly submitted to the relevant authorities.

Wike made the clarification while speaking to journalists during an inspection of ongoing infrastructure projects in the Federal Capital Territory, where he addressed growing controversy surrounding the opposition party’s planned convention.

The allegation was first raised by former PDP spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, who claimed that less than 24 hours before the event, the ADC had not been allocated a venue despite repeated requests to the FCT administration.

According to Ologbondiyan, the party had written to the office of the FCT Minister seeking approval to use Eagle Square. Although the letter was acknowledged, he alleged that no official approval was granted. He also claimed the party’s request to use the Moshood Abiola National Stadium velodrome was declined, while several private event centres in Abuja reportedly refused to host the convention over fears of political backlash.

The ADC reportedly proceeded to secure an alternative venue, the Rainbow Event Centre in Abuja, after encountering what it described as logistical and administrative hurdles.

However, Wike rejected claims of political interference, stating that the proper procedure for booking Eagle Square was not followed. He explained that the facility is managed through the Abuja Investments Company Limited (AICL) and requires formal application, payment, and security clearance before approval.

“Who denied them? I am not aware of any such development. If it is ADC, such claims are their usual attempt to gain public sympathy,” Wike said.

He further insisted that no official request had been received by the responsible agency.

“As we speak, no formal application has been submitted to the Abuja Investments Company Limited. When APC used Eagle Square and when PDP used the velodrome, they followed due process,” he added.

Wike also clarified that the Moshood Abiola National Stadium velodrome falls under the jurisdiction of the National Sports Commission, not the FCT Administration, distancing his office from decisions regarding its allocation.

A letter dated April 7, reportedly signed by ADC official Chinedu Idigo, had earlier shown that the party formally requested Eagle Square for what it described as a non-elective national convention. The party stated that the venue was chosen for its capacity, central location, and security suitability, and also assured authorities it would comply with all conditions, including payment and post-event maintenance.

Despite this, the request was reportedly not approved, prompting criticism from party stakeholders who alleged administrative delays and lack of transparency.

Wike, however, maintained that the FCT Administration does not deny any political party access to public facilities if due process is followed, adding that allegations of bias are politically motivated.

The minister also used the inspection visit to highlight ongoing infrastructure projects across Abuja, expressing satisfaction with progress made on key road networks. He disclosed that several projects are expected to be completed by mid-May, while streetlight installations will be concluded shortly after.

At Gaduwa, he said measures had been taken to protect road corridors from encroachment, while at Wassa, plans were underway to relocate informal traders, including Apo Mechanic Village operators, to a newly developed facility with improved infrastructure.

Wike also addressed recent windstorm damage at the Kugbo Bus Terminal, describing it as a natural event that affected only roofing sheets, with repairs already ongoing. He stressed that the structure remains intact and no casualties were recorded.

The minister attributed ongoing development progress in the FCT to stronger contractor compliance and improved funding mechanisms, which he said have ensured steady delivery of projects across Abuja.

Man Allegedly Kills Two Sisters, Five-Year-Old Daughter in Ondo

A shocking case of family violence in Ondo State has left residents of Okitipupa reeling after a 28-year-old man, Femi Agbeye, allegedly killed two of his female siblings and his five-year-old daughter.

The disturbing incident occurred on April 8 at the Agbeye family residence located on Doctor’s Road in the Government Reserved Area of Okitipupa. According to reports, the suspect allegedly forced his way into the apartment, locked himself inside, and carried out the deadly attack.

Eyewitness accounts and family sources revealed that the victims were later found lifeless in a room within the house, prompting immediate alarm and police intervention.

Speaking on the tragedy, the suspect’s father, Ade Agbeye, disclosed that his son had a troubling history of substance abuse and violent threats, which had raised serious concerns within the family prior to the incident.

“He had been involved in the use of illicit substances and had been threatening to kill his mother and me for some time,” he said.

He further explained that the situation escalated fatally on the day of the attack.

“When we entered the house, we saw the bodies of the children on the floor in their mother’s room. I immediately went to the police to inform them,” he added.

Ade also alleged that the suspect had previously been arrested over related issues but was released despite his objections, a development he believes contributed to the tragic outcome.

Residents in the area reportedly observed the suspect acting suspiciously and forcing his way into the compound shortly before the incident, raising fresh concerns about early warning signs and community response to potential threats.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, Jimoh Abayomi, stated that a full investigation is underway.

“The command assures residents that due diligence will be carried out. There is no need for panic, and we urge the public to remain calm,” he said.

He further assured that the police are committed to ensuring justice is served, adding that all aspects of the case, including the suspect’s background and mental condition, are being thoroughly examined.

The suspect is currently in police custody as investigations continue into the Okitipupa killings. Meanwhile, the tragic incident has sparked renewed calls for stronger action against drug abuse in Nigeria, as well as improved attention to mental health and early intervention in cases involving violent behaviour.

Fake Image of Governor Alia Bowing to Sultan Sparks Controversy, Palace Reacts

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has dismissed a viral image circulating on social media that allegedly shows the Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, bowing before him in an act described by some users as “worship.”

The image, which spread rapidly across WhatsApp, Facebook, and other platforms, triggered widespread reactions online, with some users linking it to religious undertones and ongoing security tensions in Benue State. The post was widely shared with claims suggesting that the governor was seen in a submissive or worshipful posture during a visit to the Sultan.

However, the Sultan firmly rejected the claims, describing the image as false, misleading, and part of a coordinated attempt to spread disinformation capable of inciting religious and ethnic tension in Nigeria.

In a statement issued by his media team and signed by Prince Bashir Adefaka, the Sultan’s office clarified that the viral content titled “leaked photo of Governor Hyacinth Alia worshipping the Sultan of Sokoto” was fabricated and designed to mislead the public.

The statement stressed that the content was likely AI-generated or digitally manipulated, warning that such material is increasingly being used to distort public perception and create division.

According to the Sultan’s media team, the viral narrative was not only false but also deliberately structured to drag the monarch into political and security issues unrelated to his office.

The statement further explained that the accompanying commentary falsely accused the Sultan of religious bias, warning that such narratives could worsen tensions in already sensitive regions.

It added that the circulation of such content reflects a growing trend of online misinformation and disinformation campaigns aimed at destabilising national unity by exploiting religious and ethnic sentiments.

The Sultan’s office also emphasized that the monarch has consistently promoted peace, unity, and interfaith dialogue in Nigeria, noting his roles in various national and international religious and traditional leadership councils.

It urged Nigerians to disregard the viral post and avoid sharing unverified content capable of causing panic or division, especially in sensitive periods of insecurity.

“As custodians of the image and public communication of the Sultan of Sokoto… we condemn these acts in the strongest terms,” the statement said, calling for responsible use of social media.

The statement also appealed to Nigerians to verify information before sharing, warning that the spread of fake images and manipulated content poses a serious threat to national unity, religious harmony, and public peace.
