Ondo dismisses rumoured death of Akeredolu as PDP asks governor to resign

The Ondo State Government has urged the public to dismiss the rumoured death of the Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, saying such was false.

A statement by the Commissioner for Information, Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, said the “governor is alive and has been attending to state matters, as well as delegating state functions.”

Ademola-Olateju said that the clarification became imperative due to how the development had created tension in the state and across the country.

She saids “We have been inundated with calls and messages concerning the state of health of Governor Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN). We had chosen to ignore this wicked fabrication until it appeared that certain people sought to draw political mileage from the disinformation.

“Though the governor has been indisposed, he has been attending to state matters and delegating functions to functionaries of the government when necessary.

“We enjoin the public to ignore the rumour. Aketi is very much alive.”

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo State has called for Akeredolu’s resignation and advised that he should hand over to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa

Its Publicity Secretary, Kennedy Peretei, in a statement, emphasised that “the handlers and managers of Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), have proved that they are not on top of their assignments. They rather take everyone in the state for granted.

“While praying for the governor’s quick recovery, the party said his aides must disclose where he has been to fray nerves in the state.”

Peretei disclosed that Akeredolu has, for a while, been absent at national events, a situation the party said called for concern.

He said, “The deafening silence from government information machinery suddenly saturated social media space with old videos of Akeredolu dancing and singing praises.

“These speculations almost put the state on edge until this morning when the Ondo State House of Assembly retained the present power structure of the

Speakership of the Assembly in Ondo Central Senatorial District.

“If Akeredolu’s handlers had done the needful, the state would have been spared the unnecessary anxiety.

“As mortals, any human being can fall sick. Whether in public office or private life, Rotimi Akeredolu is employed by the people of Ondo State and maintained with taxpayers’ money. So, it is criminal and a great disservice to keep mum over his health status and his whereabouts.

“The PDP, Ondo State chapter demands that those hiding the governor should tell the people where he is to save the state from speculation.

“Nobody should ground the state beyond its present state. Let Akeredolu resign, if he is no longer fit to be governor.”

EFCC insists on naira, bans foreign currencies at embassies

EFCC insists on naira, bans foreign currencies at embassies

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has directed that the Naira should be the only legal tender for transactions at foreign embassies in Nigeria.

The Commission also banned the use of dollars for business transactions and payment of other services at foreign missions in the country.

This was revealed in a letter dated April 5, 2024, addressed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and his Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to the EFCC, Nigerian foreign missions abroad were also directed to accept naira in their financial businesses.

The EFCC also mentioned that the directives would help in combating the dollarization of the Nigerian economy and the depreciation of the naira.

In the letter, the Chairman of the Commission, Ola Olukoyede, further expressed sadness over the invoicing of consular services in Nigeria by foreign missions in dollars.

Olukoyede said: “I present to you the compliments of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and wish to notify you about the commission’s observation, with dismay, regarding the unhealthy practice by some foreign missions to invoice consular services to Nigerians and other foreign nationals in the country in the United States dollar.

“This practice is an aberration and unlawful as it conflicts with existing laws and financial regulations in Nigeria. Section 20(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007 makes currencies issued by the apex bank the only legal tender in Nigeria.

“It states that ‘the currency notes issued by the Bank shall be the legal tender in Nigeria on their face value for the payment of any amount’.

“This presupposes that any transaction in currencies other than the naira anywhere in Nigeria contravenes the law and is, therefore, illegal.”

Rivers crisis may truncate Nigeria’s democracy, remember ‘Operation Wetie’ – Bode George warns

Rivers crisis may truncate Nigeria’s democracy, remember ‘Operation Wetie’ – Bode George warns

A former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, on Friday, has warned that the political crisis rocking Rivers State could consume the country.

He urged elders and stakeholders of the party to intervene in the crisis between members of the state House of Assembly loyal to the ex-governor Nyesome Wike and incumbent Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

He also urged President Bola Tinubu not to treat with levity the threat by some lawmakers in the state to impeach Governor Fubara, insisting that the state belongs to the PDP.

He advised that nobody should sit on the fence and pretend that things were fine in the state.

He quoted Section 109 (1) (g) of the 1999 Constitution, stating that a member of a House of Assembly would vacate his seat in the House if he becomes a member of another political party before the expiration of the period for which he was elected.

George maintained that all the PDP lawmakers who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) had automatically lost their seats.

“They are in no position to threaten Governor Fubara. So, their plot to commence impeachment proceedings against the governor is already in vain,” he said.

He also said, “Rivers people belong to PDP. Those threatening to impeach the governor are being remote-controlled by some forces. This must stop because if Rivers is set on fire today, that may end this democracy.

“We should remember ‘Operation Wetie’ which started in the defunct Western Region and eventually consumed the nation and ended the First Republic in 1966.

“All the actors in this crisis in Rivers should avoid actions likely to cause breach of peace and breakdown of law and order in our country.

“Members of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of our party should be the elders in the room, act swiftly and nip this crisis in the bud before it consumes everybody.

“All the gladiators should also think of the collective interests of Nigerians. Whether we are members of PDP, APC or other parties, we should stop issuing provocative statements to increase the tension in Rivers.

“Any move that can truncate this democracy must be stopped immediately. Enough is enough”.

NANS kicks against tuition fee introduction in federal varsities

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly opposed the recent proposal by Sonny Echono, the Executive Secretary of TETFUND, to introduce tuition fees in federal universities.

Echono’s suggestion, made during an education sector conference in Abuja themed “Funding for Tertiary Education in Nigeria,” sparked widespread concern among student communities.

Pedro Obi, the President of NANS, issued a statement on Friday, condemning the proposal as a direct assault on the fundamental principle of accessible education for all Nigerians.

Obi emphasized that federal universities have historically served as pillars of hope for underprivileged students, offering them the opportunity to pursue higher education without financial constraints. Introducing tuition fees, he argued, would undermine this noble principle and create barriers that could prevent countless deserving students from accessing tertiary education.

While acknowledging the need for sustainable funding in educational institutions, Obi asserted that burdening students and their families with tuition fees is not a viable solution. He urged the government to explore alternative funding mechanisms that would not compromise the accessibility and affordability of education.

NANS called on the federal government to reject the proposal and uphold its commitment to providing free and accessible education for all Nigerians. Obi urged stakeholders in the education sector to prioritize the welfare and future of students above all other considerations.

The statement reiterated that education is a fundamental right, not a privilege reserved for the affluent. NANS affirmed its unwavering commitment to defending this principle and ensuring equal access to quality education for every Nigerian.
