Military warns against calls for coup over economic hardship
‘Those calling for coup don’t mean well for Nigeria’
The military has warned those calling for a forceful takeover of government through a coup due to the rising cost of living in Nigeria.
It said on Thursday that it would come down hard on people inviting the military to truncate Nigeria’s democracy, noting that they do not mean well for the country.
Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, said this on Thursday, saying those calling a coup did not mean well for the country.
Musa said the Armed Forces would continue to protect the country’s democracy.
He spoke while responding to questions from newsmen shortly after he commissioned the main entrance of the 6 Division, Nigerian Army and Officers Transit Accommodation, both at the Division Headquarters in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital.
Although he admitted the country was experiencing some challenges, he said coup calls were improper because nations would achieve more and develop faster under a democracy.
“Whoever is making that the call (coup) does not love Nigeria. We want to make it very clear that the Armed Forces of Nigeria are here to protect democracy.
“We all want democracy and we do better under democracy. And so we will continue to support democracy. And any of those ones that are calling for anything other than democracy are evil people and I think they don’t mean well for Nigeria.
“And they should be very careful because the law will come after them. We can see that with democracy a lot of things are happening in Nigeria. Yes we are going through trying periods, I mean in life nothing is hundred percent.”
He also stated, “Everybody goes through a trying period in life, and it is what you do with them. You can see the government putting efforts to ensure that we come out better.
“And it is when you go through difficulties and come out better you will really appreciate what it is to build a nation. And so we are going through our trying period, but I can assure Nigerians that it will get better.
“All we need is for all of us to put our hands together to ensure that we defeat those enemies of the government; those enemies of this country that don’t want us to succeed. We will surely succeed and the Armed Forces are here to support the government in ensuring that we develop; we succeed and to see that there is peace in Nigeria.”

Mbah places N10m bounty on killers of policemen in Enugu
Enugu State governor, Mr. Peter Mbah, has placed a N10 million bounty on those who killed two policemen in Enugu, vowing to apprehend them.
He said this after a security council meeting in Enugu, which was attended by the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Kanayo Uzuegbu, Director, State Security Services, Theresa Egbunu, Garrison Commander, 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, Brigadier General Murtala Abu, and the Commander, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Peter Ogar, among others.
The two security agents were killed by gunmen at a checkpoint along Presidential Road.
The incident occurred at 9:30 pm, Friday, when the officers serving in Ogui Division were conducting a stop-and-search.
The development happened barely one week after two policemen and three vigilante operatives otherwise known as Neighbourhood Watch Group were killed in another attack by hoodlums in Igga community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area.
However, the governor also called on members of the public to be on the lookout for the fleeing suspects.

His words: “We just rounded off our security council meeting where we discussed, among other things, the gruesome killing of our policemen, men of the Enugu State Police Command, by criminals suspected to be members of the ESN. “Let me say this, this bestial and cold-blooded action cannot be condoned in Enugu State. I have given my directives to the security agencies that there must be no hiding place for these criminals in Enugu State. We must use everything necessary to hunt down, arrest, and bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous crime. “We have also placed a bounty of N10 million as a reward to anyone, who would have any useful information that will lead to the arrest of these criminals. So, I enjoin members of the public to, please, come forward, or call the police and other security agencies with any useful information that could lead to the arrest of these criminals.
“We do not have room to accommodate these people, these vagabonds, and these miscreants in our state.
“We are going to do everything necessary to ensure that the ultimate sacrifice made by our valiant policemen does not go in vain. “Our condolences go to the bereaved families. I will also ensure that as a government, we are going to provide the necessary support to the bereaved families.
“Let me just also add that those who murder our policemen or indeed any member of our security agencies may assume that they have triumphed in their evil acts. Let me inform them that we are going to come after them with everything we have.
“We are going to deploy all the necessary technology, all the necessary forces within our powers to track them, capture them and defeat them.’’

Tinubu fair to have nominated El-Rufai as minister – Bagudu
Tinubu fair to have nominated El-Rufai as minister – Bagudu
The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu, has said President Bola Tinubu should not be blamed for the National Assembly’s failure to confirm Nasir El-Rufai as a federal minister.
Mr Bagudu said President Tinubu has shown “character and promise keeping” by nominating Mr El-Rufai to be a minister in his cabinet but the National Assembly as an institution withheld his confirmation.
“Constitutional democracy is based on separation of powers,” Mr Bagudu told PREMIUM TIMES in an exclusive interview. “The Senate has been given a constitutional role in the confirmation process. If they decide to deny any one of us, they are approving their confirmation power.”
“The president is handicapped by our constitution to do everything. Is it fair? But that is how the laws have been set up,” he added.
Mr El-Rufai, as governor of Kaduna State, campaigned vigorously for the election of Mr Tinubu. He, alongside Mr Bagudu and other governors of northern states played major roles to help Mr Tinubu win the APC primary.
Before the general election, Mr Tinubu publicly invited Mr El-Rufai to work with him if he became Nigeria’s president.
Last August, President Tinubu nominated Mr El-Rufai for ministerial appointment and sent his name to the Senate for legislative screening.

The upper legislative chamber, however, withheld his confirmation and those of two others, citing security reports from the State Security Service for the action. The two others were a former senator from Taraba, Sani Danladi, and a nominee from Delta State, Stella Okotete.
Consequently, the former Kaduna State governor withdrew his interest in being part of Mr Tinubu’s cabinet.
During his confirmation hearing on 1 August 2023, El-Rufai said Mr Tinubu asked him to work with him on the power problem facing the country. According to him, the president had given a target of seven years for Nigeria to stop experiencing power outages in the country.
According to Mr Bagudu, the president did everything he could to have Mr El Rufai in his cabinet.
“I wish the National Assembly had confirmed him,” Mr Bagudu said.
When asked why Mr Tinubu did not intervene or lobby the National Assembly to confirm Mr El-Rufai, Mr Bagudu said he would not want to speculate.
“What was done objectively is that the president nominated him. We know that his name was read at the Senate. He went to the National Assembly for screening. He answered all the questions that were asked of him. Although some were stepped down.
“So that’s an objective way to look at it. That is what happened. I can’t answer speculatively, but I believe for the president to submit your name, for you at least to be taken to the National assembly, it’s the best measure of the president’s willingness and confidence in the person,” he said.
In the interview, Mr Bagudu also spoke about the economy, the 2024 budget, the Lagos-Calabar coastal road and other matters.
