Bamise: Sanwo-Olu slams critics, BRT suspends operations, family demands justice
The Lagos State Government on Tuesday suspended the operations of the Bus Rapid Transit due to protests against the tragic death of a female passenger, Oluwabamise Ayanwole.
PUNCH Metro had reported that the police recovered Oluwabamise’s corpse around the Ebute Ero area of the state.
The 22-year-old was last seen on a BRT bus driven by one Andrew Nice, who fled after voice notes and a video clip of the victim recorded on the bus indicated that she was unsafe.
Operatives of the Department of State Services later arrested Nice at his hideout in Ososa, Ogun State.
The driver was subsequently handed over to the police as he was paraded at the command headquarters in Ikeja on Monday.

BRT driver conflicting confessions
Nice, during the parade, denied involvement in Oluwabamise’s death, saying his bus was hijacked by three gunmen who posed as passengers.
However, in a video clip that emerged on Monday night, the 47-year-old admitted to committing “dirty acts.”
The confession was said to have preceded his parade by the police.
“I am telling you the truth, she forced herself out of that bus; she was crying for help and everything was recorded. And because of the dirty acts I had done and how stupid I am, I am afraid,” he said in the clip posted on Twitter.
Sanwo-Olu slams critics, sensational posts
The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday, said investigation into the case was ongoing.

Oluwabamise Ayanwole
The governor, who spoke during an event to commemorate the International Women’s Day at Onikan, cautioned those he said were twisting the story with unfounded insinuations.
He said, “I have read some narratives and write-ups on social media in the last few hours. Some people are deliberately and extremely being sensational, posting that the Lagos State Government wanted to cover something; even my person.
“These people trivialise life, which appears to me like they just want to score a cheap point. These people are of low minds and have no conscience.
“Our government will certainly not be deterred by such wicked narratives. What we are about is to ensure that we transparently get to the roots of the matter. That is why the police and the Department of State Services picked up the driver, who ran to another state, where he was arrested.
“The full wrath of the law will be applied on whoever is found wanting in this matter. And we will ensure the incident does not repeat itself.”
He also warned the public against boarding BRT buses after the close of bus services in the evening, saying vehicles that had closed for the day would indicate by switching off their inner lights.
Stranded commuters, fare hike
In an apparent step to forestall attacks on BRT vehicles by residents protesting Oluwabamise’s death, the state government suspended the operations of the vehicles on Tuesday.
At terminals in Ikorodu, Mile 12, Ketu, Ojota, none of the branded buses was seen on the road.

When PUNCH Metro visited the BRT terminal at Ojodu Berger, stranded commuters were seen lamenting the situation.
It was gathered that commercial buses took advantage of the scarcity to jack up transport fares.
Some of the routes witnessed hikes to the tune of 40 per cent, while others went as high as 50 per cent.
Our correspondents learnt that heavily-armed security operatives were deployed in the Freedom Park, Ojota, to stop protesters from converging on the spot.
Family demands justice
During a press briefing on Tuesday, Oluwabamise’s elder sister said she went through hell before she died.
While shedding tears, she said, “I went to Akinpelu (Police Station) to report on Sunday; I reported to a policewoman and after seeing all the video evidence, she turned it down as if she never had a child before. It wasn’t as if the girl (Oluwabamise) was wise; it was the Holy Spirit that led her to get the evidence.
“Oluwabamise left her working place to help the mother of an unborn child. The boy has been delivered and now, we are going to tell the story of Oluwabamise to this boy that it was when you were coming to this world that they took her away. They used our last born for money rituals.
“The driver said some people attacked him, but after they left, you drove the bus to the BRT office comfortably. You never felt the pains of that girl when they were cutting her private parts. They did not kill her before cutting her private parts; my sister went through hell before her last breath on earth.
“You drove down and went home to meet your family, but never knew that the girl had taken all the details of you. She captured the number of the bus, the video, and the voice. When he got to their terminal, why didn’t he report to the police? He didn’t report to his bosses; he resumed work on Monday. President Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Sanwo-Olu, we want justice!”
Assembly, gov’s wife assure family
PUNCH Metro gathered that after the conference, the family alongside some sympathisers staged a protest in front of the state House of Assembly.
The Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, who addressed the group, promised that the legislative arm would ensure justice in the matter.
He said, “The erroneous belief that it would be swept under the carpet is unnecessary. The driver has been arrested and is in custody. We are watching and must ensure justice is done in the case.”

The governor’s wife, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, while also condemning the killing of Oluwabamise, described her death as sad, shocking, and devastating.
“As mothers, we are devastated; we are in shock; we are not happy. Lagos State is not known for ritual killings and we will not tolerate such.
“Investigations are going on and I am sure there will be justice. Mr Governor is not sleeping. There will certainly be justice,” she added.
The Head, Corporate Communications, Primero Transport Services Limited, Mutiu Yekeen, while sympathizing with the family of the victim, said the government directed the suspension of BRT services.
“It is a directive from the Lagos State Government that we should not operate BRT buses today (Tuesday) due to the protest planned for the girl that was missing and later found dead. The directive came from LAMATA specifically,” he said.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu, said the deployment of policemen in Ojota was to forestall a breakdown of law and order.

‘He Squeezes My Breasts,’ Wife Tells Court as Judge Dissolves 10-Year Marriage Over Battery
‘He Squeezes My Breasts,’ Wife Tells Court as Judge Dissolves 10-Year Marriage Over Battery
NASARAWA, NIGERIA – A Mararaba Upper Area Court in Nasarawa State has dissolved the 10-year-old marriage between Mercy Okolie and her husband, Henry Nwaodi, on grounds of battery, granting the mother of four custody of their children after she testified that her husband smokes Indian hemp, beats her, and squeezes her breasts during assaults . Delivering judgment, the judge, Abubakar Tijjani, said all efforts to reconcile the parties had failed. “This union was dissolved in the interest of peace. I also urge the parties to maintain peace at all time. Any violation of this order of the court will amount to contempt with grave consequences,” he said . According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Tijjani directed the parties to collect their divorce certificate from the registrar’s office .
The court granted custody of their four children to Mercy. Additionally, the judge ordered Nwaodi to pay N20,000 to Mercy as monthly upkeep and N34,000 for each child’s school fees per term . In her petition, Mercy alleged that her husband was irresponsible and a brute. “My husband has failed in his matrimonial obligations towards me and our children. He has also failed to provide me and our children with the basic necessities. I have been providing for the home financially. I feed and pay the house rent,” she told the court . She further detailed the physical abuse she endured. “My husband smokes cigarette and Indian hemp, and is hostile to our children. Henry beats me at the slightest provocation and squeezes my breasts. He always threatens to kill me,” she said . Mercy pleaded with the court to separate them, stating: “There is no longer love in our union and nothing can bring us together again.” The respondent did not object to the separation.

The dissolution of this marriage comes amid ongoing efforts by the Nasarawa State Government to combat Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and strengthen legal protections for victims of domestic abuse. The state has adopted both the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act and the Child Rights Act (CRA) . According to a report by the Stand to End Rape (STER) Initiative, Nasarawa State is among eight states in Nigeria, alongside Delta, Ekiti, FCT, Kogi, Oyo, Borno, and Ebonyi, that have achieved a 100% implementation score for these legislative frameworks . The Nasarawa State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Aisha Ibrahim Rufai, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eradicating GBV. “Gender-based violence should not be tolerated,” she said, emphasizing that the state government has put in place adequate measures to eradicate GBV and provide succor to victims . However, despite strong legislative adoption, challenges remain in community awareness. Data reveals that only 17% of states conduct community awareness campaigns about these legislations more than 20 times per year, underscoring a gap between legislative adoption and public understanding .
Nasarawa State has witnessed several high-profile cases of gender-based violence in recent months, reflecting the persistent challenges facing survivors. In April 2026, a 37-year-old pastor, Asonye Isaiah, was arrested for allegedly defiling a 16-year-old girl under the guise of performing spiritual cleansing. The pastor reportedly deceived the victim’s aunt, claiming the teenager was “possessed” and needed cleansing at a river. Instead, he took her to a hotel in New Karshi, where he allegedly had unlawful carnal knowledge of her twice and threatened to kill her if she disclosed the incident . The Nasarawa State Police Command confirmed the arrest, and the Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Lafia for comprehensive investigation and prosecution . In another landmark case, the Chief Judge of Nasarawa State, Justice Aisha Bashir-Aliyu, sentenced a man, Ahmadu Yaro, to 21 years in prison for raping a three-month-old infant in Adogi village. The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, praised the ruling, describing it as a watershed moment in Nigeria’s fight to protect children from sexual violence . She called on other states to emulate Nasarawa’s example, urging families, communities, law enforcement, and the judiciary to collaborate in building a safer Nigeria for all children. “Let this ruling serve as a turning point; a signal to all offenders that Nigeria will no longer shield those who violate her children,” she said.

16 Feared Dead as Bandits Attack Katsina Village After Friday Prayers
16 Feared Dead as Bandits Attack Katsina Village After Friday Prayers
KATSINA, NIGERIA – At least 16 villagers are feared dead, while many others remain missing, following an attack by bandits on Kiliya village near Bagagadi in Dutsinma Local Government Area of Katsina State . The attack occurred on Friday shortly after residents had concluded Juma’at prayers and were relaxing, holding discussions in the spirit of the Sallah celebrations .
An eyewitness from the area recounted that he first saw two bandits riding on a motorcycle. Villagers began running upon sighting them, but the attackers ordered them to stop. The bandits later went to a mechanic’s house and suddenly opened fire on residents and other passersby . “After the Friday prayers, we were sitting together with other villagers. I called a boy who was selling local drinks and bought a bowl from him when the bandits arrived. I saw two of them on a motorcycle. People started running and they told us not to run, but suddenly they began shooting,” the source said . “The boy and I ran into a house and hid. While in hiding, we heard screams and gunshots everywhere. After some minutes, the shooting stopped. When we came out, we found the lifeless bodies of about 16 people, including some of my uncles and cousins,” he added .
According to him, following the attack more than 400 people have sought refuge in Bagagadi village, while many others have relocated to Radda village for safety . He added that several residents are still unaccounted for after the attack. A resident of neighbouring Bagagadi village told reporters that more than 30 displaced persons from Kiliya village, mostly women and children, are currently taking shelter in his house . There are indications that some victims were killed on their farms, as several bodies were found in farmlands around the village . Another eyewitness, a 14-year-old boy, said he saw the first motorcycle arrive and that more attackers followed after the initial gunmen had opened fire indiscriminately on the villagers.

Sources suggest the attack may have been a reprisal for a previous incident. It was gathered that two suspected bandits were reportedly killed by villagers a few days earlier . “From the nature of this attack, it appears to be a reprisal attack because a few days ago, two bandits were killed, and reports indicated that they belonged to a notorious gang. Perhaps that is why they came to the village and carried out this attack,” a source said .
The attack on Kiliya village is the latest in a series of deadly bandit attacks across Katsina State . In recent weeks, several communities have experienced violent raids. The Katsina State Police Command has been actively working to counter these threats. On May 19, 2026, police announced the arrest of a 45-year-old man, Surajo Isyaku, over his alleged involvement in kidnapping, cattle rustling, and acting as an informant for armed bandits operating in Matazu LGA . The suspect was reportedly linked to the deadly attack on Sayaya village in Matazu LGA, during which a police officer was killed and several houses destroyed .
Similarly, in early May, troops of the 17 Brigade neutralized four suspected terrorists during a patrol along the Turare-Yantumaki Road in Dutsinma LGA, recovering one AK-47 rifle, ammunition, motorcycles, mobile phones, and cash . The neutralized suspects were identified as key figures behind a series of deadly attacks in communities within Dutsinma and Matazu LGAs . The Katsina State Government has consistently condemned these attacks. In response to previous incidents, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu, described the targeting of civilians as “unacceptable and an act of terror” . The state government has also reaffirmed its commitment to tackling insecurity and safeguarding lives and property .
When contacted, the Katsina State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, said the report of the attack was yet to reach the command, but promised to reach out as soon as the command receives the report . As of the time of filing this report, he was yet to get back to our reporter .

‘Negotiate, Don’t Let Them Waste Us’: Abducted Oyo Principal Begs Tinubu, Makinde
‘Negotiate, Don’t Let Them Waste Us’: Abducted Oyo Principal Begs Tinubu, Makinde
IBADAN, OYO STATE – Rachael Alamu, the abducted principal of Community High School, Ahoro-Esinle in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, has made a desperate appeal from captivity to President Bola Tinubu and Governor Seyi Makinde, pleading with them to abandon the use of force and instead negotiate with the kidnappers holding her and dozens of others hostage . In two separate videos posted on Instagram on Friday, a visibly traumatized Alamu said she and other victims, including young children, have spent 13 days in the bush since gunmen attacked three schools in the area on May 15, 2026 . She described their harrowing conditions, saying they have been exposed to harsh weather with no shelter. “We are in the cold, we are under the sun, we are under the rain, the children and the adults as well. Please, we are begging you, don’t let them waste our lives,” she pleaded .
The principal specifically warned that a failed rescue attempt by security operatives has worsened their situation and directly endangered one of the captives. According to her, the kidnappers have selected one person for execution as a direct consequence of the government’s use of force. “The force that they used yesterday has cost us so much. It has added to our problems. In fact, someone among us has been picked and they are going to kill him because government tried to help us by force,” she revealed in the video . “We don’t need force, all they have to do is to negotiate with them and release us. Please, just negotiate with them and dialogue with them,” she added . The principal also made a direct appeal to the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) to intervene and help facilitate negotiations .

In another emotional video, Alamu spoke in Yoruba, begging for mercy and urgent intervention. “Please, help us. We beg you in the name of God, please have mercy on us. This is too much. In the sun and in the rain. Both old and young, we are in the same place,” she cried . “Today marks the 13th day since we were kidnapped. We don’t want you to fight them at all. Whatever they ask for, please, give to them” . She further stated, “Today is the 27th of May, 2026. It has been about 13 days since we were picked from work, and till now we are still in the bush” . The visibly exhausted principal warned that the kidnappers were becoming increasingly impatient and frustrated, raising fears that more lives could be lost if negotiations are not urgently initiated.

One of the abducted teachers, Mary Akanbi, who is nursing a baby, also appeared in the video pleading for help. Clutching her young child, Akanbi begged Governor Makinde to negotiate with the abductors for their release. “We are pleading with Governor Seyi Makinde, please help us, negotiate with these people. Whatever they want, please give to them. We are all here; we the teachers and the students,” she said . It was earlier reported that a two-year-old toddler, Christianah Akanbi, of Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School, is among the 46 persons kidnapped by the terrorists .
The abduction occurred on May 15, 2026, when heavily armed gunmen on motorcycles attacked three schools in the Ahoro-Esinle and Yawota areas of Oriire Local Government Area: Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele; Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; and L.A. Primary School, Alawusa . According to community leaders, a total of 46 persons – seven teachers and 39 students – were abducted . The Oyo State Police Command later gave conflicting figures, stating that seven students, 18 pupils, and seven teachers remained missing . During the attack, an assistant headmaster was killed, and a commercial motorcyclist was also shot dead . A mathematics teacher, Michael Oyedokun, was later beheaded in captivity. A disturbing video that surfaced on Monday allegedly showed how the bandits tied Oyedokun to a tree before killing him .
Governor Makinde, while speaking to journalists shortly after the incident, confirmed that his administration was ready to listen to the abductors and would not surrender to terror in the state . “Whatever it is they demand, we are ready to listen to them and address the ones that we can address as a state government. But the children and their teachers must be released,” Makinde said . The governor also disclosed that about six suspects had been arrested in connection with the abduction, believed to be informants and logistics suppliers working with the kidnappers . He added that security operatives had encountered Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) planted by the abductors during rescue attempts, which led to the deaths of some tactical team members, Amotekun Corps operatives, and local vigilantes .
The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, visited the affected communities and ordered intensified search-and-rescue operations, deploying additional detectives from the Force Headquarters to collaborate with the joint security team on the ground . The Defence Headquarters confirmed that troops had made contact with the abductors and were continuing search and pursuit operations with full determination . In a message marking the dual celebration of Eid-el-Kabir and National Children’s Day on May 27, Governor Makinde expressed solidarity with the families of the victims. “As we mark this year’s Eid and Children’s Day, our thoughts are with every family awaiting the return of their loved ones, and with security agencies working to keep our communities safe,” he wrote on his official X handle .
Meanwhile, teachers and civil society groups in Oyo State staged a peaceful protest demanding decisive and immediate action to secure the release of their colleagues and the schoolchildren. The National President of the Nigeria Teachers Congress (NTC), Reverend Bunmi Thomas, expressed deep concern over the condition of the victims, particularly the children. “We have children as young as two and three years old in the bush. They are exposed to rain and harsh weather conditions. These victims are in danger, and nobody knows who could be next,” he lamented . As of the time of this report, the abductors have reportedly opened communication channels with the state government, though it remains unclear whether negotiations have officially begun.
