BREAKING: Eguavoen resigns as Eagles’ technical adviser
Austin Eguavoen has stepped down from his role as the technical adviser of the Super Eagles.
His resignation came a few days after Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
According to a statement released by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) on Thursday, Eguavoen has vacated the position “with immediate effect.”
It also confirmed the withdrawal of the “two-and-half years contract offered the coaches” and the termination of “the appointment of the entire technical crew of the team with immediate effect.”
“Following the failure of the Super Eagles of Nigeria to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the erstwhile Technical Adviser, Augustine Eguavoen, has stepped down from that position with immediate effect,” the statement read.
“The NFF has, in the meantime, withdrawn the two-and-half years’ contract offered the coaches and terminated the appointment of the entire technical crew of the team with immediate effect. A new crew will be announced after a proper review to lead the new charge of reinvigorating the Super Eagles to face future challenges appropriately.
“’We thank the coaches and team officials for their service to the nation and wish them success in their future endeavours,’ said NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi.”
The disengagement of the technical crew came just a little over one month after it was constituted as NFF dumped Jose Peseiro, Portuguese tactician, for Eguavoen following his exploits at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon.

Why CAF May Postpone 2027 AFCON
Why CAF May Postpone 2027 AFCON
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is reportedly considering postponing the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to 2028 due to delays in stadium construction, logistical challenges, and scheduling conflicts across the three East African host nations: Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The CAF executive committee is expected to meet soon in Dar es Salaam to discuss the potential delay and the future of the tournament.
The 2027 edition, nicknamed the “Pamoja” AFCON, is set to be the first co-hosted by three countries and will feature 24 national teams. Originally scheduled for June–July 2027, CAF has expressed concerns that the hosts may not complete critical stadium and training facility upgrades, raising questions about their ability to meet CAF’s strict standards for safety, broadcasting, and operational readiness.
Why CAF Is Considering a Postponement
According to reports, CAF’s potential delay is driven by several key factors:
- Infrastructure Challenges: Stadiums and training facilities in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda still require upgrades to meet CAF and FIFA standards.
- Operational Concerns: Security, ticketing, and logistical challenges observed during the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) highlight risks of hosting a larger-scale tournament.

- Scheduling Conflicts: The 2027 AFCON timeline overlaps with 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and other international fixtures, complicating player release and team preparations.
CAF has deployed technical inspection teams to assess major venues across the three host nations. These include Kasarani, Nyayo, and Talanta Stadiums in Kenya, Benjamin Mkapa and Arusha Samia Suluhu Stadiums in Tanzania, and Mandela National Stadium and Hoima City Stadium in Uganda. The inspections aim to ensure the stadiums meet CAF safety, capacity, and broadcasting standards.
Host Nations’ Response
Despite concerns, host countries remain confident. Tanzania and Kenya have highlighted ongoing renovations and improvements, while Uganda has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring readiness. Officials say they are working closely with CAF to meet all tournament requirements in time.
Implications of a Postponement
If the 2027 AFCON is postponed:
- National Team Schedules would need adjustment, impacting qualifiers and preparation for other CAF competitions.
- Commercial Agreements and sponsorship deals may require renegotiation to align with new dates.
- The delay could coincide with CAF’s broader calendar restructuring, including the launch of the African Nations League, aimed at increasing competitive opportunities for African players.
CAF is expected to release an official statement following the executive committee meeting, confirming whether the tournament will proceed as planned or be postponed to 2028.
