FG extends NIN-SIM linkage to May

The Federal Government has extended NIN and SIM card linkage deadline from April to 6th May, 2021.
The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami disclosed this in a meeting of the Ministerial Task Force on the NIN-SIM data linkage, which chaired on Abuja.
The meeting was attended by key stakeholders, including the EVC/CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission, DG/CEO of the National Identity Management Commission, DG/CEO of the National Information Technology Development Agency and Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Also present at the meeting were representative of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and the Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON).
Others included the NCC Executive Commissioners Technical Services and Stakeholder Management, MD/CEOs of MTN, Airtel, EMTS (9Mobile), NTEL, Spectranet and SMILE, as well as the COO of Glo.
According to the minister, the request for the extension was presented to President Muhammadu Buhari and he endorsed it.
On the updates of the NIN-registration process, the meeting confirmed that , over 51 million people have been assigned NINs.
“There are many people who have enrolled and are in the process of being assigned NINs. With each individual having an average of 3 to 4 SIMs, the total number of SIMs tied to NINs would close to the total number of registered SIMs in the country. The current number of monthly enrollments has increased significantly to about 2.6 million registrations.
“There has also been a remarkable increase in the number of enrolment centres across the country with about 3,800 centres available for enrollments . There are also many more new centres in the pipeline,” said the minister.
The minister also emphasised the importance of obtaining feedback from all stakeholders in order to ensure that the NIN-SIM linkage process is one that cannot easily be compromised.
He thank Nigerians for their patience and compliance with the Federal Government’s directive on the NIN-SIM registration exercise. He reiterated government’s commitment to continually taking decisions aimed at easing the pains of the citizens with regard to issues related to NIN and SIM registration.
The Chairman of the EFCC who addressed the meeting stated that the NIN-SIM linkage would support the Federal Government in checkmating the activities of fraudsters and cybercriminals.
The Federal Government had earlier extended the NIN-SIM linkage deadline to April 6, 2021 following a widespread protested that greeted the initial time line.

President Tinubu arrives in Brazil for G20 Summit focused on SDG challenges

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria arrived in Rio de Janeiro late Sunday night, marking his participation in the 19th Heads of State and Government Summit of the G20.

Accompanied by a high-level delegation of ministers, Tinubu was welcomed by Brazilian officials, including Ambassador Breno Costa of the Ministry of External Relations.

The summit, hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, takes place from November 18 to 19 under the theme “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet.”

Discussions will prioritize sustainable development’s economic, social, and environmental dimensions, alongside pressing geopolitical concerns, including the Israel-Hamas conflict and escalating tensions between the United States and China.

Tinubu’s delegation reflects a diverse portfolio of Nigeria’s strategic priorities. Among those joining him are Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Livestock Development Idi Mukhtar Maiha, and Minister of Art, Tourism, Culture, and Creativity Hannatu Musawa. Others include Minister of State for Agriculture Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi and National Intelligence Agency Director General Amb. Mohammed Mohammed.

As part of his agenda, Tinubu is expected to engage in bilateral meetings on the summit’s sidelines to further Nigeria’s socio-economic reforms and global partnerships.

Tinubu’s presence at the summit is seen as a testament to the growing role of African nations in shaping global economic policies.

Ondo gov: Go to court, Tinubu tells aggrieved PDP, others

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged candidates dissatisfied with the results of the Ondo State governorship election to seek redress using the judiciary to address their grievances.

He spoke after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner of the election.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu congratulated Governor Aiyedatiwa and lauded the peaceful conduct of the election.

He also commended the 17 political parties and their candidates for their maturity during the campaigns and on election day.

“Those dissatisfied with the outcome of the election can explore the opportunities provided by the judicial system to seek redress on areas of conflict,” the statement read.

President Tinubu said the Ondo election demonstrated the capacity of INEC to deliver credible polls, highlighting the timely deployment of electoral workers and materials as well as the uploading of over 98% of results on the same day.

He also expressed appreciation to the security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, National Civil Defence Corps, Federal Road Safety Corps, National Youth Service Corps, and the military, for their professionalism in ensuring a peaceful electoral process.

Tinubu stressed the importance of maintaining civility in post-election activities.

[UPDATED] [Breaking] APC’s Lucky Aiyedatiwa wins Ondo governorship election

Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, has emerged victorious in the Ondo governorship election.

Olayemi Akinwumi, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) returning officer, disclosed the results in Akure, Ondo’s capital, on Sunday.

Aiyedatiwa, the incumbent governor, secured 366,781 votes, surpassing Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 117,845 votes.

Nejo Adeyemi, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, trailed behind with 4,138 votes.

The APC dominated the election, winning all 18 local government areas, while the PDP failed to secure any victories.

The off-cycle election in Ondo, contested by 17 candidates, took place peacefully, with minimal violence reported.

Prior to the election, Aiyedatiwa expressed confidence in his victory, citing his impressive record in office.

Aiyedatiwa emphasized that he was the sole candidate to have visited all 18 local government areas, adding that he’s willing to concede defeat if the election is free from manipulation.

Ajayi, Aiyedatiwa’s closest rival, expressed concerns regarding INEC’s capability to ensure a fair electoral process.

The PDP candidate also criticized the commission’s sluggish pace, alleging that it constitutes a “deliberate attempt to rig the polls”.
