Tragedy has hit the movie industry as a Nigeria-based Cameroonian filmmaker Edgard Leroy has died in auto accident on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The late filmmaker recently won the prestigious African Magic Viewer’s Choice Award as the Best Indigenous Movie in the Yoruba category for the production of ‘Alatise’

He was aged 26.

His colleague and a co-recipient of the award of the Best Indigenous Language Movie or Series (Yoruba) at the AMVCA, Demola Yusuf, confirmed that Leroy was involved in the accident on Saturday.

Yusuf said on his Facebook page that his friend was on his way to a movie location in Ibadan when the auto crash occurred.

He wrote, “It’s with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved Director and co-producer @edgardleroy We lost him to a ghastly auto crash on the 11th of June along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

“He was on his way to a movie location in Ibadan when the sad occurrence happened in Shagamu. Please join us in praying that God grants him one of the best spaces in heaven. His last wish would be for us to never stop giving our best, as he was a passionate creative. May God grant him eternal rest.”

The first of six children, Leroy was born in a small family based off the coastlines of the southwest region of Cameroon.

In an interview, the filmmaker made it known that as a child, he had always been passionate about anything within the media space. This passion soon blossomed into him starting off a career in journalism — on the radio at age 11, with the support of my parents.

Years later, he discovered the desire to tell stories through motion pictures; a passion that made him drop out of university to enrol in a film school.”

Allwell Ademola’s Death: Laide Bakare Condemns Colleagues’ TikTok Activity

Nollywood actress Laide Bakare has criticised some of her colleagues and fans for creating social media content following the death of fellow actress Allwell Ademola, expressing shock and disappointment over how the tragedy is being handled online.

Bakare, in an emotional post shared on Instagram, lamented that some individuals were active on platforms such as TikTok, playing games and collecting virtual gifts just hours after Ademola’s passing.

“The way fans and colleagues are creating content with the passing of our dear sister is really sad. God is watching everyone. Rest well, Allwell,” Bakare wrote.

Bakare’s remarks came amid an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and fans following the announcement of Allwell Ademola’s death. Carter Efe Slams Peller’s Suicide Attempt, Urges Him Back to Streaming After Jarvis Breakup

Popular Nigerian streamer Carter Efe has publicly appealed to his colleague, Peller, to return to work and stop isolating himself following his painful breakup with Jarvis.

The 20-year-old content creator has been largely absent from social media since the split, which reportedly preceded a deliberate car accident on December 14 that left him hospitalised. Before the incident, Peller had shared a distressing video online in which he expressed suicidal thoughts, raising serious concerns among fans and fellow creators.

READ ALSO:

During a recent livestream, Carter Efe criticised Peller’s decision to contemplate ending his life over a relationship, urging him to refocus on his streaming career and re-engage with his audience. He advised Peller to stop withdrawing from public life and instead channel his energy back into productive work.

Carter Efe also referenced the experience of the wife of late musician Mohbad, encouraging Peller to learn resilience and move forward despite personal loss. Speaking partly in pidgin, the streamer stressed that heartbreak should not derail one’s life or career, insisting that returning to work could aid Peller’s recovery.

The incident has reignited conversations around mental health awareness, the pressures faced by young entertainers, and the need for stronger support systems within Nigeria’s digital creator community.

If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, please seek immediate help from a trusted person or a mental health professional.
