Hijab circular: MURIC expresses appreciation to Tinubu, Sanwo-Olu
The Lagos State Government earlier this week issued an official circular which formally approved the use of Hijab in all Lagos schools.
Newsbreak.ng reports that this was sequel to the appeal made recently by an Islamic human rights organisation, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), to the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to intervene in the hijab affair in Lagos State.
It would be recalled that last week, MURIC appealed to Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State, to wade into the delay in the enforcement of the Supreme Court judgement on hijab in Lagos State schools.
Consequently, MURIC has expressed gratitude to Tinubu, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and others for ‘their role in facilitating’ the issuance of the circular.
The statement signed by MURIC’s Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, partly reads: “MURIC expresses profound appreciation to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for rising to the occasion.

“We also thank the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for giving the final approval. Both the Head of Service, Mr. Hakeem Okunola and the Commissioner of Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, for their constructive engagement which eventually led to the fruitful outcome.
“Equally worthy of mention are those who were involved in high-level diplomatic consultations behind the scene in the past 48 hours towards resolving the impasse. This resulted in treating the matter with military dispatch and the emergence of the circular within 24 hours. We are very grateful to them.
“MURIC congratulates the Muslim lawyers Association of Nigeria (MULAN), the Lagos Muslim Community and the entire Muslim Ummah who have shared our concerns over the years for the issuance of this historic circular.
“With this new development, MURIC pledges to double its pursuance of the presidential ambition of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as well as the second tenure goal of Governor Sanwo-Olu. We call on all Islamic organisations in the country and all lovers of good governance to join hands with us in ensuring that these two goals become fait accompli.”

Court dismisses Nnamdi Kanu’s appeal against police, DSS over unlawful arrest, detention
The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Monday dismissed the appeal brought before it by Felix Okonkwo, one of the lawyers to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu over his unlawful arrest and detention by the Police and the State Security Services, SSS.
Justice Okon Abang dismissed the appeal for want of merit and substance.
Delivering judgment on Monday on the appeal, Justice Abang held that the appellant failed to establish a miscarriage of justice in the judgment of a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja in the matter.
The appellants comprising Felix Okonkwo, Ikenna Chibuike and Okafor Ugochukwu had dragged the Nigeria Police Force and the SSS before the high court for the enforcement of their fundamental human rights.
They specifically accused the two security agencies of violating their fundamental rights by their unlawful arrest and detention on September 27, 2021, during which they claimed that they were tortured, harassed and intimidated while in the custody of the Police.
Justice Samaila Bature had, in his judgment delivered on March 24, 2022, found the Police liable for the unlawful arrest and detention of the appellants and subsequently imposed a fine of N2 million against the Police to be paid to the appellants.
Justice Bature, however, did not make any order against the SSS because the Appellants, then plaintiffs, did not disclose any cause of action against SSS.

Not satisfied with the findings and decisions of the high court, the three plaintiffs approached the Court of Appeal praying for an order to hold that SSS was also culpable in their arrest and detention.
They claimed that the N2 million imposed on the Police as a fine to be paid to them was paltry and ridiculously low and asked the appellate court to jerk up the fine as compensation for their unlawful arrest and detention.
In his judgment, Justice Abang held that from the video footage tendered as exhibit by the appellants at the trial court, there was nowhere the operatives of the SSS were found at the scene of their arrest in the house of Ifeanyi Ejiofor in Anambra State.
The appellate court Justice disagreed with the appellants in their claims that the N2 million compensatory damages were grossly insufficient.
According to Justice Abang, the decision to award compensatory damages is at the discretion of a Judge and cannot be dictated by any plaintiff or appellant.
In the instant case, Justice Abang agreed with Justice Bature that peculiar facts and circumstances of the unlawful arrest and detention of the appellants were carefully considered at the trial court before arriving at the amount.
Besides, Justice Abang said the appellants did not point out irrelevant facts in the judgment of the high court and did not disclose their status in society, their monthly or yearly income and what they lost in the course of their detention.
“In my opinion and going by the peculiar facts and circumstances of this case, the N2 million compensation to the appellants was properly awarded.
“I cannot fault the award because the appellant did not give any good reason for them to have been awarded a much higher amount.
“In the final analysis, the appeal lacks merit and it is accordingly dismissed, the decision of the trial court is hereby affirmed. There is an order as to cost”, Justice Abang held.
Justices Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole and Abba Bello Mohammed endorsed the unanimous judgment delivered by Justice Abang.

Withheld Salaries: UNN SSANU, NASU join nationwide warning strike
Administrative activities on Monday in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) are grounded following the Senior Staff Association of Universities (SSANU) and Non-academic Staff Union of Educational Associated Institutions (NASU) joining the 7-day nationwide warning strike declared by the Joint Action Committee of the two unions.
SSANU and NASU said the aim of the warning strike is to protest against the Federal Government’s failure to pay its members the four months withheld salaries during their strike in 2022.
Addressing members during an emergency congress on Monday in UNN, Dr. Linus Akata, Chairman of SSANU-UNN flanked by Comrade Ekene Amu, Chairman of NASU-UNN said that the aim of the congress was to tell their members about the 7-day nationwide warning strike declared by the joint action committee of the two union.
Akata said that the strike will be total and comprehensive in adherence to the directive of the national body.
He said that all the administrative offices and essential service sections of the university were already under lock and key, and warned that the unions would deal decisively with any defaulting member.
“We are embarking on a 7-day warning strike to seek redress for the perceived injustice and discrepancies in the payment of salaries.
“Members are directed to home immediately after this congress and stay away from work until the 7-day warning strike elapses, as any defaulting member will be decisively dealt with.

“This warning strike is total and comprehensive as the administrative block of the University, works department, university medical center, primary school, and other essential sections have been shut down till the end of the strike.
“There will be no water and electricity supply from the University to the hostels, also, internet service from the University IT section will be shut down for the period,” he said.
The SSANU chairman said that they have no apology for this 7-day warning strike as their national body has done everything necessary to avert the strike by appealing to the Federal Government to do the needful.
“SSANU and NASU have written so many letters to the Federal Government, held several press conferences, and led delegations to government officials in a bid to persuade the Federal Government to pay the withheld salaries, all to no avail.
“Nigerian government should explain to our members why salaries withheld from SSANU and NASU members remained unpaid while those of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) were disbursed.
“After this warning strike, if the Federal Government did not meet our demand we will wait for our national body for the next line of action,” he said.
Akata urged their members to remain in their homes for the period of the strike and also report any threat or query for not reporting to work from management, head of department, or faculty to the union, stressing that the struggle is for the rights and welfare of their members.
He said further that the two unions have set up a joint monitoring team to ensure total compliance in the University.
Some of the student interviewed about the 7-day warning strike expressed their concern and regretted that they were at the receiving end of the warning strike.
They appealed to the federal government to quickly resolve the issue to enable them to continue with their smooth academic activities and their comfort in the campus.
