Man, 20, kills 65-year-old Ondo woman over alleged 3,000 theft
Man, 20, kills 65-year-old Ondo woman over alleged 3,000 theft
A 20-year-old man, Friday Akinmade, has been arrested by the Ondo State Security Network Agency, known as Amotekun, for the alleged murder of a 65-year-old woman.
The incident reportedly occurred in Owo, Akinmade’s hometown, where he is accused of killing the elderly woman with a stick after stealing N3,000 from her.
During an interview with journalists at the Amotekun headquarters in Akure, the state capital, Akinmade confessed to hitting the woman twice on the head with a stick, claiming he did not realize she would later die from the injuries.
He recounted that the confrontation arose when he accused her of stealing, prompting her to flee the scene.
Akinmade was paraded alongside 26 other individuals arrested for various crimes, including kidnapping, theft, and burglary, by the Commander of the Amotekun Corps, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye.
Adeleye said: “Akinmade Friday outrightly killed a 65-year-old woman. This is a 20-year-old boy.”
“We have a 42-year-old man who attacked Amotekun officers in a bid to cover his nefarious activity by the name Gbenro. We equally have Samuel Peter, a 21-year-old man, who engaged in an attempted murder.
“We have a 30-year-old man who engaged in malicious damage, cultism and attempted murder of law enforcement agents.

“In the same way, we narrowed down on one Segun Owolabi, 20 years old, who engages in stealing motorcycles and robbing dispossessed rightful owners.
“We have a gang that specialises in burgling houses, especially when owners of such houses are not in their houses.
“We have Toba, Pelumi, Ogumade, and Oriade, whose age bracket ranges between 22 and 25.
We equally have Shegwo Yusuf, who engages in malicious damage to household properties.
“The uniqueness of today’s parade is that apart from very little cases, about two or three kidnapping cases at the borders, that is the Akunu-Kogi-Ondo border, where we had two cases of kidnapping and in Ose border-Edo-Ondo border, where we had one case in the last two weeks, we could say that the entire 18 local governments are at peace.
“Generally speaking, I want to place on record that Ondo state is peaceful and community friendly, investment friendly, and farmers are encouraged to go to the farm as the Amotekun rangers are already in the farms across the state, especially in the government forest reserves to ensure that there are no infringements.
“Apart from this, what the security situation has enumerated tells us that as a result of the harsh economic situation we have in the country, there are more cases of housebreaking.
“A cross-section of this showed that more than before, the state is getting more peaceful. I want to assure the residents of Ondo State that the Ondo State Security Network Agency will continue to engage criminals, both within the town and in the forest, towards ensuring that people can sleep with their two eyes closed in their houses, farmers can go to their farms and commuters can travel without fear, especially as the yuletide period is coming in.”

Nigerian Army Suspends Retirements for Officers Amid Nationwide Security Emergency
Nigerian Army Suspends Retirements for Officers Amid Nationwide Security Emergency
The Nigerian Army has temporarily frozen both statutory and voluntary retirements for certain officers, including Generals, following the nationwide security emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu. The decision aims to bolster manpower as the country faces a surge in kidnappings and worsening insecurity.
The move comes after more than 600 abduction cases were reported in November 2025, including the kidnapping of over 300 students in Niger State, 38 worshippers in Kwara State, and 25 students in Kebbi State.
An internal circular dated December 3 and signed by Maj. Gen. E. I. Okoro on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff cited provisions in the Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service Officers (HTACOS) 2024, allowing service extensions “in the interest of the service.” The memo explains that officers usually retire upon reaching age limits, completing 35 years of service, or failing promotion/conversion boards, but these rules can be overridden during national emergencies.

The suspension affects officers who have:
- Failed promotion examinations three times
- Been passed over repeatedly at promotion boards
- Reached rank age limits
- Failed conversion boards thrice
- Completed 35 years of service
Officers granted extensions will remain in service but will not be eligible for further promotions, courses, secondments, or extra-regimental appointments. Those unwilling to continue can still proceed with standard exit procedures.
Commanders have been instructed to communicate the directive and manage morale across units, with the policy to be reviewed once national security conditions improve.
