A man simply identified as Azeez, has allegedly jumped into the lagoon in Lagos and drowned, to avoid arrest for being accused of stealing some bags of cement.

The spokesperson of the Police command in Lagos , SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday.

Hundeyin said that the Director in charge of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) operations in Lagos Central, (name not mentioned), reported the case to Ikoyi Police Division on Friday at about 12.20 p.m.

Hundeyin said that the director reported that at about 10.45 a.m. on Friday, he received a call that there was an incident at Lekki/Ikoyi Link Bridge.

According to him, on getting to the scene, he met a large crowd gathered by the waterside, watching the lifeless body of a man who had drowned.

“The deceased was later identified as Azeez. He was later confirmed dead by paramedics of Pre Hospital Care, Lagos.

“It was discovered that the seller of the cement, was pursuing the deceased before he jumped into the Lagoon, because he was alleged to have stolen some bags of cement,” Hundeyin said.

The image maker said that the scene was visited by the police, while the corpse had been evacuated to Mainland General Hospital Mortuary, Yaba, for autopsy and preservation.

Hundeyin said that investigation into the case was in progress.

Police declare wanted Ogun landlady, husband who dumped tenant’s corpse in canal

In Ogun State, the dead body of a woman, simply identified as Iya Ibukun has been allegedly thrown into a canal by her landlady and her husband.

The landlady, Bola Abiodun, and her husband, identified simply as Sunday, reportedly committed the crime at about 12:05 pm on May 8, 2024.

The incident happened in Temidire community in the Ifo Local Government Area of the south west State.

The police have launched a manhunt for the duo who have since fled their home in the community.

According to Punch, the deceased had earlier been knocked down by a hit-and-run driver on May 5, 2024.

She was said to have suffered varying degrees of injury from the accident, and subsequently resorted to self-medication because she couldn’t pay for medical bills.

After turning to self-medication, she passed away in her apartment a few days later.

The corpse was allegedly taken from the room and disposed of in a nearby canal by the landlady and her husband.

The chairman of the Community Development Association, Mosuru Akindele, was reportedly called by the residents who had suspicions about the alleged occurrence, and the youth leader, Olabode Kazeem, was also contacted following the incident.

“There was an accident; a hit-and-run driver allegedly knocked the tenant down. She didn’t go to the hospital and started treating herself at home. She died a few days after the incident. The landlady and her husband conspired to dump the body in a canal,” Punch quoted a police as saying.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident to newsmen and said the police were working to recover the body from the canal.

“Our men went to the house and discovered a two-year-old boy in a welfare facility. Meanwhile, our men combed the entire canal in search of the body, but we haven’t found anything,” she said.

17 abducted passengers in Katsina regain freedom

A coordinated effort by security forces has led to the successful rescue of 17 male passengers who were abducted in the Solar General Area of Batsari LGA, Katsina State.

According to a reliable military source, the operation was initiated in response to a distress call received on May 11, 2024, around 12:00 pm.

Subsequently, troops from Nigerian Army Team 9, in conjunction with the Katsina Police Command, State Community Watch Corps, Special Hunters, and local hunters from Batsari, quickly mobilized and were dispatched to the location. Upon arrival, the joint security forces engaged the violent extremists in a firefight.

Overwhelmed by the superior firepower of the security forces, the extremists abandoned their abductees and fled into the nearby bush.

All the abducted passengers were successfully rescued and have been released to the officials of Batsari LGA, the military source revealed.

The Nigerian Army has driven terrorists out of their operational bases in Rugga, Sarti, and Yade in Taraba State.

Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, confirmed this in a statement on Sunday.

He claimed that the terrorists were dislodged during a patrol by the 93rd Battalion Sub-sector 3B.

He stated that the operation, which aimed to eradicate terrorist strongholds in remote areas of Taraba State, resulted in the recovery of arms and ammunition.

According to him, the seized items included an AK-47 rifle, a magazine containing seven rounds of 7.6mm X39mm ball ammunition, and a cartridge.

A knife and two mobile phones belonging to the terrorists were also confiscated, he added.

“The troops continue to pursue the terrorists to dismantle all criminal hideouts, ensuring the area remains inhospitable for unlawful activities.

The statement added, “These successful military operations demonstrate the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to combating all forms of criminal activities decisively.”

Major General Nwachukwu reassured the public of their safety and security, particularly as the farming season approached.
