Man sentenced to death by hanging for setting his mother ablaze in Niger state

A Minna High Court 1 presided by Chief Judge of Niger State, Justice Halima Ibrahim Abdulmalik, has sentenced a middle-aged man, Stephen Jiya, to death by hanging for the murder of his biological mother, Mrs. Comfort Jiya.

Recall that the deceased, a former Principal of Government Girls’ Secondary School, Sabon Wuse and Maryam Babangida Girls’ Science College, Minna, died after she was set ablaze by Stephen.

Comfort was in her kitchen at her residence in Darusalam Area of Minna, when her son, said to be a drug addict, returned from Suleja on Monday December 20, 2021, and poured petrol on her before lighting her up.

She was rushed to the General Hospital Minna by neighbours and later transferred to another medical facility where she succumbed to her injuries.

Stephen was arrested by the state Criminal Intelligence Department (SCID) of the Police Command and confessed to the crime, claiming that his mother usually intruded into his marital affairs.

Jiya was earlier arraigned before a magistrate court by the SCID operatives on provisional charges while awaiting legal advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for proper prosecution in a competent court.

The DPP formally charged him on September 14, 2022, before Justice Halima Abdulmalik of High Court 1, under Section 221 of the Penal Code Law which provides a death penalty if found guilty.

Natasha: Tempers flare as Senator Nwaebonyi clashes with Ezekwesili at Senate hearing

A heated exchange broke out between Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi (Ebonyi North) and former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, during a Senate hearing on Tuesday.

The confrontation took place at the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions session, where the committee was considering a fresh petition filed by suspended Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Ezekwesili, who was present alongside Abiola Akiode (counsel to Akpoti-Uduaghan) and the petitioner Zubairu Yakubu, reportedly clashed with Senator Nwaebonyi over issues raised during the hearing.

Trouble started when Yakubu attempted to speak while Senate Committee Chairman, Neda Imaseun, was addressing the room.

READ ALSO:

He was asked to mute his microphone, but when Ezekwesili tried to intervene, Nwaebonyi interrupted her.

In response, Ezekwesili told the senator to “compose himself and stop making noise,” a remark that sparked an angry outburst.

“You’re a fool. What do you mean? Why are you talking to me like that? I will not take it. You’re an insult to womanhood. People like you cannot be here,” Nwaebonyi replied Ezekwesili.

Ezekwesili called him a “hooligan,” further escalating the altercation.

The verbal battle momentarily disrupted the hearing before order was restored.

Shortly after, Imaseun announced that the matter was already before a court of law, bringing the session to an abrupt end.

Akpabio has habit of abusing women, says Atiku

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has alleged that Senate President Godswill Akpabio was not only corrupt during his tenure as a governor but also has a history of abusing women.

Atiku made this claim during an interview with Adesuwa Giwa-Osagie of Untold Stories, stating that he has known Akpabio to engage in such misconduct.

The Senate President has previously faced allegations of sexual harassment from at least two women who worked with him. However, Akpabio has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

One of the women includes the former managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Joy Nunieh who alleged that the Senate President harassed her during his time as the NDDC minister. Nunieh also claimed to have slapped Akpabio for her sexually harassing her.

Also, in a most recent allegation, the lawmaker representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged that Akpabio has harassed her severally during her short stay at the Nigerian Senate.

READ ALSO:

Akpoti-Uduaghan who is currently under suspension from the Senate said Akpabio had promised to help her career by handing her juicy positions with the conditions that she yields to his sexual advances.

Answering questions on the character of the current Senate President, Atiku said, “Not only was he (Akpabio) corrupt but he was also in the habit of abusing, you know, women.”

Speaking on the planned coalition of opposition parties and leaders across the nation, ahead of the 2027 election, Atiku suggested that they done it (a merger) before and would likely do it again in preparation of the 2027 general elections.

“You know we had, you know, a similar merger in 2014, and there were about four of us. Or is it two or three? We all ran for President and one of us emerged and we all supported the one who emerged and he won. I have not seen Nigeria in dire need of, you know, an experienced and credible leadership than this time,” Atiku said.

On the State of Emergency declared in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu, the 2023 presidential candidate for the People’s Democratic Party said he was not surprised that the National Assembly could approve such.

He insisted that the Red Chamber section of the National Assembly is headed by a corrupt individual.

“I was not surprised because I know the leadership is corrupt and I have no apologies about that. And they could do anything, the Senate is actually know to be having those type of character even when he was a governor,” he added.

Attack on Mufty of Ilorin: Onikijipa Family Charges Stakeholders to Call Sheikh Habibullahi Al-Ilory to Order

Attack on Mufty of Ilorin: Onikijipa Family Charges Stakeholders to Call Sheikh Habibullahi Al-Ilory to Order

Stakeholders in Ilorin Emirate have been asked to call to order the Mudirul, Markaz Centre for Arabic and Islamic Studies, Agege, Lagos State, Sheikh Habibullahi Adam Al-Ilory, over his persistent attacks on the personality of the Grand Mufty of Ilorin, Sheikh Suleiman Faruq Onikijipa.

In a statement issued in Ilorin on Sunday and obtained by Just Event Online TV , the Magaji Onikijipa Compound, Alhaji Abdulrahman Suyuti Onikijipa, on behalf of the family, said there is no distinction between the descendants of Onikijipa as they remain an indivisible entity.

The statement was titled “No Bastard among the Onikijipa: A Rejoinder to Habibullah Adam Al-Ilory”.

It clarified that the statement credited to Habibullahi Al-Ilory that the father of Grand Mufty of Ilorin, Sheikh Faruq Onikijipa was not a member of Onikijipa was not only false but a lie from the pit of hell.

The statement explained that Sheikh Habibullahi Al-Ilory’s unsubstantiated claim was borne out of mischief and a ploy to create a wedge among Onikijipa family, insisting that the family does not harbour a bastard.

It recalled that this was not the first time the Mudirul Markaz would try to rewrite history of Onikijipa even in explicit contradictions to his father, Sheikh Adam Abdullahi Al-Ilory’s narrations in his mere usual bid to claim the “all-knowing”.

The statement noted that Sheikh Habibullahi Al-Ilory was out to discredit the good image of the Grand Mufty of Ilorin, adding that he has made attacks on anyone as his own trademark.

It described as bogus the claim attributed to Sheikh Habibullahi Al-Ilory that only Alfa Alabi Onikijipa is the original Onikijipa and maintained that both Alfa Alabi Onikijipa and Alfa Faruq Onikijipa, the father of the Mufty of Ilorin are brothers and one family.

“We are compelled to release this statement in view of the recent shenanigan being displayed by Habibullah Adam Al-Ilory. We would not have responded to the story he put up in his head for reasons best known to him, but for the important need to set the record straight so that in the future people will not doubt our history as one strong Onikijipa family. This is not the first time this individual has tried to rewrite history even in explicit contradictions to his father’s narrations in his mere usual bid to claim the “all-knowing”. He is the only one who can help us to understand the reasons for doing that. As far as we are concerned, he is just being mischievous.

“On Friday 21st of Ramadan, Habibullah Adam Al-Ilory informed his listeners that he wanted to attack the Onikijipa family. During his daily tafsir, he went astray to attack our family in his usual nonsensical manner, an attempt to create disunity among us. But for his information, we are one strong indivisible family.

“There are some points that need to be addressed.

Habibullah Adam Al-Ilory claimed that our illustrious son, Sheikh Suleiman Faruq Onikijipa, the grand Mufty of Ilorin, is angry with Sheikh Adam Al-Ilory, Habibullah’s father, because the sheikh did not mention Sheikh Suleiman Faruq’s father in his book. This is not only laughable but a lie from the pit of hell. Habibullah should inform us the point at which Sheikh Suleiman said this and in what context. We believe this is just another lie to discredit the Mufty’s good image. That is Habibullah Adam Al-Ilory trade mark: he attacks everyone. He recently did the same to the people of Agbogunmati.

“As if that was not enough, Habibullah Adam Al-Ilory narrated that Sheikh Suleiman’s father is not a member of Onikijipa. This is another nonsense! His theory is that any house or household in Ilorin that is situated outside the main compound is not part of the family. Such a household, according to his theory, must have been given or gifted to the land. They are not originally part of the family. One begins to wonder if Habibullah Adam Al-Ilory remembers where his own family house is situated in Ilorin. It is there for everyone to see.

“Habibullah Adam Al-Ilory, in his desire to create disunity among us, claimed that Alfa Alabi Onikijipa is the original Onikijipa. If we had not heard this ourselves, we would not have believed it is coming from a man, who is expected to know better. But it is not surprising; that is his way. He attacks without a reason. He comes up with all sorts of theories just prove anything! There are instances out there. But this is our story, Alfa Alabi Onikijipa and Alfa Faruq Onikijipa are brothers and one family. There is no separation among us. It is even more worrisome that such a respected scholar is using “show me your father’s grave” theory as a proof of originality. Pathetic!

It is really appreciative if this man is called to order by stakeholders from Ilorin Emirate. Using his own words, he should not let people begin to “dig his own dead”. But we the Onikijipa are learned and respectful. We will not become pig”, the statement read partly.
