Mother of beauty queen, Chidimma Adetshina, arrested in South Africa
South African officials have detained Anabela Rungo, the mother of Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina, on charges of fraudulently acquiring a South African identification document.
The Department of Home Affairs stated that Rungo, a Mozambican national, was detained at a hideout in Cape Town on Saturday in a combined operation between Home Affairs investigators and the South African Police Service, according to local news portal Sunday World.
Siya Qoza, a department spokesperson, was quoted as saying that Rungo was declared persona non grata in September 2024 after inspectors discovered inconsistencies with her residency status.
“Investigators from the department, assisted by SAPS, detained Anabela Rungo at a property in Cape Town. The department withdrew Rungo’s South African documentation in September 2024 after finding that it had been fraudulently obtained, rendering her ineligible to continue residing in South Africa,” Qoza said.

Rungo’s status was called into question following the controversy surrounding her daughter’s participation in the Miss South Africa beauty competition.
It was eventually revealed that Adetshina was ineligible to run since she was not a South African citizen.
At the time of her arrest, Rungo was reportedly with Adetshina’s minor kid, prompting officials to contact the Department of Social Development and SAPS Kid Protection Services to secure the child’s safety.
Qoza accused Rungo of intentionally violating the country’s immigration restrictions despite being designated undesirable.
“It appears that Rungo has defied her ‘undesirable’ status through her Mozambican passport. Investigations are ongoing into further potential misrepresentation and fraudulent conduct.
“After being processed by Home Affairs over her illegal continued residence in South Africa, she will be handed over to SAPS, as she is also the subject of an ongoing Hawks investigation,” he added.
Chronicle NG reports that Adetshina, with Nigerian origin, withdrew from the Miss SA pageant and later contested in Miss Universe Nigeria, where she emerged as the winner following the revelation of her immigration status.
At the Miss Universe pageant in Mexico last November, she finished as first runner-up.

The Delta State Police Command has made a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the murder of retired Justice Ifeoma Okogwu in Anambra State, arresting key suspects linked to the case.
Spokesperson SP Bright Edafe disclosed on Sunday that operatives of the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), acting on credible intelligence, apprehended 25-year-old security guard Godwin Mngumi on 6 December 2025. Mngumi allegedly murdered the retired judge, and authorities also recovered the deceased’s mobile phone from him.

Nigerian Army Suspends Retirements for Officers Amid Nationwide Security Emergency
The Nigerian Army has temporarily frozen both statutory and voluntary retirements for certain officers, including Generals, following the nationwide security emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu. The decision aims to bolster manpower as the country faces a surge in kidnappings and worsening insecurity.
The move comes after more than 600 abduction cases were reported in November 2025, including the kidnapping of over 300 students in Niger State, 38 worshippers in Kwara State, and 25 students in Kebbi State.
An internal circular dated December 3 and signed by Maj. Gen. E. I. Okoro on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff cited provisions in the Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service Officers (HTACOS) 2024, allowing service extensions “in the interest of the service.” The memo explains that officers usually retire upon reaching age limits, completing 35 years of service, or failing promotion/conversion boards, but these rules can be overridden during national emergencies.

The suspension affects officers who have:
- Failed promotion examinations three times
- Been passed over repeatedly at promotion boards
- Reached rank age limits
- Failed conversion boards thrice
- Completed 35 years of service
Officers granted extensions will remain in service but will not be eligible for further promotions, courses, secondments, or extra-regimental appointments. Those unwilling to continue can still proceed with standard exit procedures.
Commanders have been instructed to communicate the directive and manage morale across units, with the policy to be reviewed once national security conditions improve.
