New national carrier plane to fly on Friday – Sirika

New national carrier plane to fly on Friday – Sirika
Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, has said the much anticipated new national career, Nigeria Air, will begin operations on Friday, three days to the terminal date of the Muhammadu Buhari administration.
Sirika said the new airline’s plane would arrive in Nigeria on Friday.
He disclosed this Wednesday on Channels TV.
He said that the aircraft would be unveiled in Nigeria’s colours, adding that the implementation of the aviation roadmap has been achieved 100 percent.
He said: “On the question of Nigeria Air, on Friday in two days, Nigeria Air plane will land in Nigeria as part of the processes to commence operation. We will on that day unveil this aircraft, the livery and everything in Nigeria’s colours, belong to Nigeria Air and we will proceed to go and do the retrofit and bring back those airplanes.”
However, it is not clear whether the airline would be cleared to commence operations or demonstration flights as part of the requirement to secure the Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) amidst disquiet within the industry over alleged move by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to waive some requirements to enable the take-off of the airline.
Also, the order of perpetual injunction issued against the airline in the suit filed by the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), is yet to be set aside even as the substantive motion challenging the shareholding structure is yet to be heard.
Additionally, despite receiving the Air Transport License (ATL), a prerequisite for obtaining an Air Operator Certificate (AOC), the airline still has a long way to go before meeting the stringent standards of the AOC, especially the stipulation of 50-hour demonstration flights for any intending carrier

APC youth leader begs Atiku to discontinue case against Tinubu in US Court

APC youth leader begs Atiku to discontinue case against Tinubu in US Court
A youth leader of the All Progressives Congress, Hyde Kalu has asked the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party and former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar to drop his case pursuing the validity of President Bola Tinubu’s educational qualifications in the United States.
The APC youth leader in Abia State said that the call becomes necessary, “because the issue is already generating negative attention to Nigeria across the globe, and Atiku should save the country this embarrassment.”
Kalu, in a press statement sent to the media Monday, said that “it is quite unfortunate that the pride of Nigeria has been dragged to a point of ridicule in the comity of nations.”
He thus pleaded with Atiku to discontinue the litigation in the United States and allow the judiciary in Nigeria to decide the post election dispute arising from the 2023 presidential election.
He said “Atiku is a statesman, and it is not in contention that he has the love of Nigeria at heart.

Chicago University: Tinubu urges US judge to release only his certificate to Atiku
“I am sure that no Nigerian is happy with the way our country has been subjected to ridicule over the court ruling in the United States
“For the love of this country and to spare Nigerians the shame of how this process may end, it is important that we plead with Atiku to drop that case and not allow us wash our dirty linens in the public.
“The election has come and gone, and a president has emerged. We are all humans, and that is why I am pleading with Atiku to discontinue the case in America for the sake of the country and in consideration of the friendship between him and President Tinubu,” Kalu said.
It will be recalled that Judge Jeffrey Gilbert of a Chicago Magistrate Court had asked the Chicago State University to testify under oath in a discovery of President Tinubu’s academic records at the university, and the president caused an emergency appeal to the ruling citing “severe and irreparable damage” to him if the order of the magistrate court was granted.
Atiku is contesting the declaration of President Tinubu as the winner of the February 25 presidential election and one of the grounds of his appeal is that the president forged the document of his academic record that was submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Fuel: 36 govs get 7-day ultimatum on N2bn palliative spending

Fuel: 36 govs get 7-day ultimatum on N2bn palliative spending
Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has given the 36 state governors a seven-day ultimatum to “disclose details on spending of the N2 billion palliative recently disbursed” to them by the Federal Government.
The money is meant to procure food items and mass transit buses to cushion effects of fuel subsidy removal on the people.
The group also asked the state governments to name beneficiaries of the funds and details of the reliefs so far provided with the money.
According to reports, the Federal Government recently disbursed N2 billion out of the N5 billion palliative package for each state of the federation and the federal capital territory (FCT), to address the impact of the removal of fuel subsidy.
In the open letter dated September 9, 2023 and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation said, “It is in the public interest to publish the details on spending of the N2 billion palliative and any subsequent disbursement of funds to your government.”
SERAP said, “Nigerians have the right to know how their states are spending the fuel subsidy relief funds. It is part of their legally enforceable human rights.”
According to the group, “transparency and accountability in the spending of the N2 billion and any subsequent disbursement to your state would help to reduce the risk of corruption, mismanagement, diversion, or opportunism.”
It also stated, “We would be grateful if the recommended measures are taken within seven days of the receipt and/or publication of this letter.
“If we have not heard from you by then, SERAP shall take all appropriate legal actions to compel you and your state to comply with our request in the public interest.”
