NYSC withdraws corps members from Kwara school over assault

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has temporarily withdrawn all corps members posted to Government Day Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin, Kwara State, following reported incident of assault on a female corps member by a female teacher at the school.

Reports indicated that about 10 female corps members hitherto serving in the junior and senior sections of the school were recalled on Monday by the State’s NYSC Directorate to ensure their safety. The incident involved a female corps member, who was assaulted by a teacher over alleged disrespect last week.

The NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Y. D. Ahmed, visited the school on Monday to address the situation before proceeding to the ongoing orientation camp for 2024 Batch C, Stream 2 Corps Members in Yikpata, Edu Local Government Area of the State. Following his visit, he directed the immediate withdrawal of all corps members from the school.

Confirming the development, Oladipo Morakinyo, the Public Relations Officer of NYSC in Kwara State, stated that the decision was made to protect all corps members serving at the school.

“Yes, it is true that all the NYSC members serving in the school have been withdrawn temporarily pending the outcome of the investigation by the panel set up by the government on the alleged assault,” Morakinyo said.

“Though the corps member assaulted is serving in the junior school, we had to withdraw those in the senior school as well to ensure their safety from potential attacks,” he added.

The erring female teacher has been sanctioned by the State government by way of demotion, for assaulting the corps member.

Amnesty seeks justice for Minna footballer shot dead by ‘drunk policemen’

Amnesty International Nigeria has demanded justice for slain Minna footballer, Sani, who was allegedly killed by drunk policemen.

Mr Sani was allegedly shot dead in Minna, Niger State on Monday at his neighbourhood tea stall without committing any crime.

“The Nigerian authorities must immediately and impartially investigate the killing of a footballer Sani by a policeman at New Market Sabon Gari Chanchaga LGA of Niger state. Sani was shot dead by the police while sleeping at his friend’s tea stall,” Amnesty said in a statement on Monday.

“Witnesses told Amnesty International that the killers of Sani were heavily drunk and went a shooting spree in the community. Sani was buried today.

“Nigerian police frequently use routine patrols to carry out gross human rights violations, including extra-judical executions, harassment, torture and extortion.

“For decades, Nigeria police had been targeting youth with utter disregard for the rule of law. It is unacceptable that despite many pledges of reforms, the police in Nigeria continue to operate with complete impunity, while fomenting a toxic climate of fear and corruption.”

Group cautions against demoralising Nigeria’s troops with negative global rankings

civil society group, Ayudantees Empowerment Initiative (AYI), has lashed out at the decision to rank Nigeria as  the 6th most terrorised country in the recent Global Terrorism Index.

Addressing newsmen on Monday in Abuja, Executive Director, AYI, Amechi Chuks Oyema, faulted the new ranking for not considering recent massive gains against terrorists in the country.

“We are here to reject that report and say that it doesn’t reflect the situation on ground.

“How did they arrive at that rating? Was the Nigerian authorities carried along?

“Did the report consider that the enemies of the country, the bandits, terrorists are under pressure as a result of intensive operations by the Armed forces of Nigeria?

READ ALSO:

“Did they consider the number of bandits, terrorists etc that have surrended to our troops?

“Did they consider the number that have been neutralized in battle ground?

“Did they consider the aggression with which our troops are pursuing the enemies of our country?” The group queried.

While saying it stands with the Defence Headquarters to declare that the report is not valid, AYI said GTI should have considered reports on ground. Analyse them critically before submitting the report, even as it warned against action that will demoralise Nigerian troops.

“There is no gainsaying that reports like this can cause apprehension in the society.

“AYI notes the people must be considered before reports like this are released.

“Our troops making sacrifices should not be demoralised. We need to support them.

“Hence, AYI like the DHQ is advising  the public, especially the media, to ignore the report.

“The troops under the able leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Chris Musa must be supported.

“We must not generate reports that don’t reflect what is on ground.”
