Ogun women protest farmlands invasion by herdsmen

A group of women from Araromi-Ibese community in Yewa North local government area of Ogun State has appealed to the state government and security agencies in the state to take drastic measures in curtailing the excess of Fulani herders that have invaded their community and destroyed their farmlands.

The protesting women, who made the call at the weekend to protest against the growing insecurity posed by Fulani herdsmen in their area, also called on traditional rulers in the Southwest to come to their aid.

The women expressed their frustration and fear over the constant attacks and harassment they face at the hands of the Fulani.

One of the protesters, who was in a video sighted by Vanguard, narrated how her daughter gave birth in the bush while running for her dear life.

She said, “We no longer feel safe in our community anymore. In the process that my daughter and I were running for our dear life, she fell into labour around 1 am, in the middle of the night, and she gave birth in the bush”.

Another person said, “The Fulani people have destroyed my farmland, taken away all my farm products, and left me with nothing.”

They called on the Ogun State government to intervene and address the security concerns in their community.

They also appealed to the traditional rulers in Yorubaland to come to their aid and help restore peace and security to their area.

Reacting to the development, a member of the House of Representatives, representing Yewa North/Imeko-Afon Federal Constituency of Ogun State, Gboyega Isiaka, described the invasion of the community by the Fulani herders as a tragic event, particularly highlighting the plight of a heavily pregnant woman forced to flee into the bush for safety.

Isiaka, in a statement issued by his media aide, Femi Peters, lamented the distress caused to women farmers in the community.

According to Isiaka, a woman reportedly delivered her baby in the middle of the night without medical care, returning to the village still gripped by fear.

“Mother and child could have died in the process,” he lamented.

Isiaka commended the proactive measures taken by security agencies and community leaders in responding to the situation.

However, he called for more decisive action to prevent future occurrences and to protect the community.

The statement reads, “My attention has been drawn to the grievances of our women in Araromi Ibese over the destruction of their farmlands by Fulani herdsmen. I am appalled by the unchecked onslaught by these herdsmen who are systematically destroying the lifeline of our communities—our farmlands”.

He pledged to closely monitor the situation and ensure that relief and support are provided to the affected farmers and their families.

“The safety and well-being of our constituents are of the utmost importance. We will not rest until the Araromi-Ibese farming community is safeguarded from further invasion. We will continue to advocate for immediate and effective government intervention to address this situation,” he added.

The lawmaker reaffirmed his commitment to protecting the livelihoods of his constituents and ensuring their security amidst the recurring threat of herdsmen attacks.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Yewa North local government area of Ogun State, Dr. Olusola Akinbode, has constituted a ‘Conflict Resolution Committee’ with a charge to proffer a lasting solution to the perennial herders and farmers conflict in the council area.

The Council boss further disclosed that, the constitution of the Committee was to ensure wider findings to the immediate and remote causes of the conflict and proffer solutions where necessary.

The Committee was headed by the Secretary to Local Government, Alhaji Lukumon Akinyemi with other stakeholders, comprising a traditional ruler, security agencies, representative of Fulani and farmers as members.

In his submission, the Secretary, Atokun Cattle Market, Pastor Olusola Akindele appreciated Governor Dapo Abiodun for constituting Conflict Resolution Committee at the state level, as well and other measures being taken to promote peaceful co- existence across the state

In his response, the Seriki Fulani, Ayetoro, Alhaji Usman Ibrahim, appreciated the council for the peace initiative, saying the local government should continue to serve as perfect template for justice and fairness in its resolve towards ending the perennial farmers/herders clashes in the council

Speaking on the invasion of farmlands by the Fulani herders, spokesperson of the State Police command, Omolola Odutola said,

the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo has taken decisive action to prevent any escalation of conflict between the herders and farmers in the State.

She said, “CP Ogunlowo has reassured residents of the State that the police are committed to ensuring peace and adequate safety for all citizens. The Police will continue to engage all parties involved to foster understanding and prevent conflicts.

“The Ogun State Police Command remains vigilant and dedicated to upholding law and order, emphasising the importance of collaborative efforts between farmers and herders to maintain peaceful coexistence in the community.”

“Members of the community are urged to report any suspicious activities or conflicts promptly to the police, as collaboration with the police is essential to fostering a secure environment for everyone.”

Gunmen abduct Catholic priest in Anambra

A Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Stephen Echezona of St. Patrick Church, Ichida, has been reportedly abducted by gunmen in Anambra State.

According to a report by security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, the incident occurred around 6:00 p.m. on Saturday when four armed men, operating in a white Lexus 330 SUV with an unknown registration number, intercepted the cleric and whisked him away along with his Toyota Highlander SUV.

A joint team of security operatives and local vigilantes (AVG) were said to have responded swiftly to the attack, pursuing the assailants and engaging them in a gun duel at a road intersection between Oraeri and Akwaeze villages.

Though the criminals managed to escape, their Lexus SUV sustained significant damage, including a shattered rear windshield.

The Anambra Police Command is yet to release a statement on the abduction of the priest.

The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Adeleke University Branch, Ede, Osun State, has described as “fake news” a statement credited to MURIC which alleged the suspension of a Muslim student of the university over Friday prayers.

The association, in a statement signed by its Ameer, Imran Adigun AbdulHakeem, on Sunday, said MURIC’s reports circulated on social media were a misrepresentation of happenings within the university, saying “our faith is respected by the management.”

In another letter, the association apologised to the director and facilitator of the university, Chief (Mrs) Dupe Adeleke-Sanni, whom the association credited with providing a conducive atmosphere for Muslim students to practise their faith.

The letter reads: “On behalf of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Adeleke University Chapter, [I] write to address the ongoing misinformation circulating on social media and other platforms regarding the suspension of Muslim Students for praying on Campus.

“On the 14th of March, 2025, we were temporarily suspended from observing our Night Ramadan Prayers (Taraweeh) and Jummat prayers on campus on the orders of the Director of Security Service (DSS).

“However, on the 18th of March, we met with Dr. Mrs. Modupe Adeleke regarding these challenges.

“She provided us with a place where we could observe Ramadan, Jummat prayers, and the five daily prayers which we accepted. As a result, the suspension has been lifted, and we have resumed prayers at the new location provided by the university on the orders of Dr Modupe Adeleke.

“At no time have Muslim Students been forced to change their beliefs. While challenges may arise in any diverse academic institution, the university management has always been open to dialogue, and we have continued to receive support in practicing our faith.

“Adeleke University has provided a peaceful and respectful environment for all faiths, and we continue to practice our religion freely.

“We urge the public to disregard the misinformation that may have been spread regarding this matter as they do not reflect the reality of our experiences,” the letter to the university management noted.

The letter of apology to Chief (Mrs) Dupe Adeleke-Sanni reads: “As-salamu alaykum (peace be upon you). On behalf of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Adeleke University Chapter, I apologize for any distress caused by the false social media reports.

“We assure you that we had no hand in spreading the misinformation. We are deeply grateful for your unwavering support, guidance, and kindness towards us.

“Your commitment to our well-being and academic success is invaluable, and we appreciate everything you’ve done for us. May Allah (SWT) reward you abundantly for your good deeds. Jazakumullah khairan (may Allah reward you with goodness).

“Thank you for being an exceptional Mother and mentor. We are blessed to have you,” the letter added.

Police inspector kills one, injures two, holds colleagues hostage in Calabar

A Police Inspector, identified as Effiong Bassey, went on a rampage in Calabar, Cross River State, on Sunday morning, killing a 41-year-old civilian, Mrs. Ijoema Obot, and injuring two others.

The incident occurred around 6:00 AM after Inspector Bassey returned from night duty at a Microfinance Bank in Calabar South to the Atakpa Divisional Police Station.

According to reports, upon his return, he refused to surrender his AK-47 rifle, instead cocking the weapon and threatening to shoot his colleagues.

A security source, speaking anonymously, disclosed that the officer blocked the station’s gate, preventing anyone from entering or leaving the facility.

“Inspector Bassey started behaving strangely, acting hostile and erratic after returning from duty. All efforts to disarm him through peaceful dialogue failed,” the source revealed.

As the situation escalated, tactical police teams were mobilized to intervene. However, upon seeing them, Bassey panicked and began shooting indiscriminately.

During the chaos, the inspector shot three individuals, including Mrs. Ijoema Obot, the wife of a retired police officer.

“Mrs. Obot was confirmed dead at the Police Clinic, while the two injured victims are currently receiving treatment,” sources said.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Irene Ugbo, assured the public that the situation was under control.

“The suspect has been arrested, and the victims are receiving treatment as we speak,” SP Ugbo stated.

Authorities are now investigating the cause of the officer’s actions while ensuring that safety and normalcy are restored in the area.
