2027: Sowore Says He’d Rather Die Than Travel Abroad For Medical Treatment

Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has said he would not travel outside Nigeria for medical treatment if elected President in the 2027 presidential election, declaring that any illness he could not treat in the country should be left to fate.

Sowore made the statement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he discussed his views on healthcare, governance and the privileges associated with political office.

“Any sickness that I can’t treat in Nigeria when I become president should better kill me,” Sowore said.

The statement reflects Sowore’s campaign position on medical treatment and his argument that Nigeria’s political leaders should rely on and strengthen domestic institutions rather than depend on privileges such as medical treatment abroad.

Sowore has also proposed making healthcare a right under an AAC administration, arguing that access to quality medical services should not be restricted to people who can afford to travel abroad for treatment.

However, his pledge not to seek treatment abroad should be understood as a personal and political commitment rather than evidence that all forms of specialised medical treatment are currently available in Nigeria.

Beyond healthcare, Sowore has outlined a number of campaign proposals for the 2027 election. These include a proposed ₦500,000 monthly living minimum wage for Nigerian workers and a pledge to pursue 24-hour electricity if elected.

He has also proposed making education free and accessible at all levels, including a plan to remove public examination fees such as WAEC and NECO charges under his proposed administration. His education blueprint also includes student grants, improved school infrastructure, digital learning and reforms to tertiary and technical education.

On housing, Sowore has proposed the construction of one million public mixed-income homes and reforms to tenancy regulations aimed at reducing the burden of large advance-rent payments on tenants. These are proposals contained in his campaign agenda and are not existing government programmes.

He has further proposed industrialisation, increased agricultural production and processing, infrastructure development and job creation as part of his economic programme.

On security, Sowore has proposed reforms to the security agencies, including improved welfare and compensation for personnel and greater use of drones and advanced intelligence technology in tackling insecurity.

He has separately outlined proposals to use artificial intelligence and blockchain technology in the fight against corruption and to increase transparency in public financial management. Under one of his proposals, AI would be used to monitor government transactions and identify suspected fraud and procurement irregularities, while blockchain would provide an immutable record of government transactions.

On political alliances ahead of the 2027 election, Sowore has maintained that the AAC is not part of the opposition coalition discussions and intends to contest on its own political platform.

He has described the AAC‘s programme as being focused on what he calls social and economic justice, equal rights and redistribution of political and economic power.

During the same Channels Television interview, Sowore also said an administration led by him would not establish an official Office of the First Lady.

That position is also a stated Sowore policy position, rather than an existing change to Nigeria’s constitutional structure. He argued that the Nigerian Constitution does not create an official Office of the First Lady and said his wife would not occupy a government office simply because he became President.

“There is no office of First Lady in the Nigerian Constitution. Becoming the president will not abolish my marriage, but I will not have the office of First Lady,” he said.

Sowore said women would continue to have a voice in his administration but questioned the use of public funds to maintain an office he considers unconstitutional.

His comments on medical treatment abroad, therefore, form part of a wider set of campaign positions through which the AAC candidate is presenting his proposed approach to healthcare, public services, economic policy and governance ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The various measures he has announced — including the ₦500,000 living minimum wage, 24-hour electricity, free education, one million homes, healthcare reform, industrialisation, security reforms and technology-driven anti-corruption measures — are proposals that he says an AAC administration would pursue if elected. They should not be presented as already implemented policies or guaranteed outcomes.

His pledge to remain in Nigeria for medical treatment if elected President similarly represents his stated campaign position and his argument that Nigeria should develop sufficient healthcare capacity to serve citizens, including those occupying the highest political offices.

Toyin Abraham Rejects Lagos APC Campaign Council Inclusion, Says She Is Staying Out Of Politics

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham has rejected her reported inclusion in the Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) Campaign Council, saying she has chosen to stay out of politics.

Abraham made the clarification after her name appeared in the APC’s published campaign council structure for the 2027 general elections, where she was listed under the Entertainment and Creative Economy Directorate.

In an Instagram Story on Thursday, September 17, the actress said she was not a member of any campaign council and asked the public to disregard the reported inclusion of her name.

“I’m not a member of any campaign council. I have said it recently. I am staying out of politics. Please disregard the supposed inclusion of my name in any campaign committee,” she wrote.

Her statement came hours after the Lagos APC Campaign Council list was released by the media centre of Deputy Governor Kadri Obafemi Hamzat.

The published list included Abraham alongside several prominent figures from Nigeria’s entertainment industry, including veteran actor Jide Kosoko, actresses Eniola Badmus and Bimbo Akintola, and Fuji musicians Wasiu Alabi Pasuma, Abass Akande Obesere and Adewale Ayuba.

The Entertainment and Creative Economy Directorate lists Toke Benson-Awoyinka as Director, with Kosoko as Co-Director and Badmus as Deputy Director. Akeem Alimi, popularly known as Ajala Jalingo, is listed as Secretary, while Dare Olateju is named Assistant Secretary.

Other entertainment personalities named in the published structure include Adebayo Salami, Saheed Balogun, Bukky Wright, Fathia Balogun, Yinka Quadri, Tayo Sobola, Foluke Daramola, Biola Adebayo, Abbey Lanre, Sule Alao Malaika, Saheed Osupa and Small Doctor.

However, Abraham’s public statement means that her appearance on the published list should not be treated as confirmation that she accepted membership of the campaign council. She has explicitly stated that she is not a member and wants the reported inclusion disregarded.

The wider Lagos APC Campaign Council includes Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as Chairman of the Lagos State Advisory Council, with former governors Babatunde Fashola and Akinwunmi Ambode listed as Co-Chairmen.

Former Senator Musiliu Obanikoro is named Director-General, while Adekunle Olayinka is listed as Campaign Secretary.

The campaign structure also includes a Governance Advisory Council headed by Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi, while several other political, legal and administrative figures have been assigned roles across various directorates.

The Lagos APC Campaign Council was scheduled for formal inauguration on Friday, September 18, 2026, at the party secretariat on ACME Road, Ikeja.

Abraham’s latest position is notable because she publicly supported Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election. Her political involvement at the time attracted criticism and discussion on social media, but her latest statement represents her stated position ahead of the 2027 election that she does not want to participate in a campaign council.

The actress did not publicly explain how her name came to be included in the APC campaign structure despite her denial. There has also been no publicly reported explanation from the Lagos APC on why her name appeared on the list.

Her clarification therefore leaves two documented developments: the Lagos APC Campaign Council published a structure bearing her name under its Entertainment and Creative Economy Directorate, while Abraham subsequently said she was not a member of the council and asked the public to disregard the listing.

The development comes as political parties continue to establish campaign structures and mobilise support ahead of the 2027 Nigerian general elections, with entertainers and other members of the creative industry featuring in some of the structures being announced.

For now, Abraham has publicly distanced herself from the Lagos APC Campaign Council, despite her name appearing in the initial membership list released by the party’s campaign structure.

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has unveiled its 2027 campaign council, bringing together Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former governors Babatunde Fashola and Akinwunmi Ambode, and other prominent party figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The campaign structure contains an advisory council, the main campaign council and several specialised directorates and committees responsible for coordinating the party’s activities for the forthcoming elections.

Under the structure, Prince Tajudeen Olusi is designated Chairman of the Governance Advisory Council, while Governor Sanwo-Olu will serve as Chairman of the Advisory Council. Former governors Fashola and Ambode are listed as co-chairmen.

Other prominent members of the advisory structure include Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu; Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly; and former Minister of Health, Adeleke Mamora.

Senior legal practitioners, including Muiz Banire, SAN, and Babatunde Ogala, SAN, are also listed in the advisory structure.

At the main Lagos APC campaign council level, Sanwo-Olu is listed as Chairman, while his deputy, Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, will serve as Deputy Chairman.

Cornelius Ojelabi is listed as Vice Chairman I, Obasa as Vice Chairman II and Damilola Sonayon James as Vice Chairman III.

Former Senator Musiliu Obanikoro has been named Director-General of the campaign council, with Rasaq Ajala as Deputy Director-General and Adekunle Olayinka as Campaign Secretary.

The council’s operational structure includes directorates and committees responsible for different aspects of the 2027 election campaign, including legal and compliance, party and inter-party affairs, administration and logistics, traditional institutions, diaspora engagement and residents’ associations.

Lawal Pedro, SAN, is listed to head the Legal and Compliance Directorate, while Niji Kazeem, SAN, is named deputy.

Other legal professionals listed in the structure include Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, Supo Shashore, SAN, and Professor Yemi Oke.

The Party and Inter-Party Affairs Directorate is to be headed by Moshood Mayegun, while Olayinka will oversee Secretariat Administration and Logistics, assisted by Thomas Da-Silva.

Chief Kunle Odufuwa is designated to coordinate activities involving traditional institutions, while Gbolahan Gbadamosi will oversee diaspora engagement, with Jermaine Sanwo-Olu as deputy.

Azeez Aremu Amusat is listed to coordinate activities involving residents’ associations, community development associations and estates.

The campaign structure also provides for grassroots coordinators and co-coordinators across Lagos’ 20 local government areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas, giving the council a state-wide organisational framework.

The formal inauguration of the campaign council is scheduled for Friday, September 18, 2026, at the Lagos APC Secretariat on ACME Road, Ikeja.

The unveiling comes after the Lagos APC formally commenced its campaign activities for the 2027 governorship and House of Assembly elections under its “Mandate Must Continue” campaign theme.

The party’s state chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, has called on members to intensify grassroots mobilisation across the state’s 20 local government areas and 37 LCDAs.

The party has also been mobilising for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid and other APC candidates in Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu and Hamzat have called for peaceful elections and urged residents and party supporters to avoid violence before, during and after the 2027 polls.

The newly released structure brings together current and former Lagos political office holders, party leaders, lawmakers, legal practitioners and grassroots organisers as the APC prepares for the 2027 electoral cycle.

The inclusion of Fashola and Ambode places both former governors within the party’s formal advisory structure for the forthcoming campaign, while Sanwo-Olu will lead the main campaign council.

The campaign council is expected to coordinate the party’s electioneering activities across Lagos, covering mobilisation, legal matters, party relations, logistics, community engagement and other campaign operations.
