Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike

PDP summons Wike over alleged anti-party activities

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially summoned the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to appear before its recently established Disciplinary Committee.

The summons comes in response to accusations of anti-party activities leveled against Wike, who has been a prominent figure within the party.

This development was disclosed by Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, during an appearance on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily on Monday.

Abdullahi expressed disappointment over Wike’s recent threats to incite political unrest in states governed by PDP members, particularly those who have declared their support for Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

He emphasized that Wike’s statements were ill-advised and could exacerbate existing tensions within the party.

The Disciplinary Committee, chaired by former Minister of Foreign Affairs High Chief Tom Ikimi, was recently formed to address internal disputes and enforce discipline within the PDP.

However, the committee’s composition has already faced criticism, with Wike’s ally, Chief Bode George, resigning in protest, alleging bias.

Wike’s threats, made over the weekend, to stir political turmoil in states where governors support Fubara in the ongoing power struggle within the Rivers State PDP, have further escalated the conflict.

The PDP Governors’ Forum had recently declared their support for Fubara during a meeting in Jalingo, Taraba State, intensifying the standoff between Wike and those backing Fubara for control of the party’s structure in Rivers State.

Addressing PDP stakeholders during the party’s state congress in Port Harcourt on Saturday, Wike boldly asserted, “Let me assure you, not while we live, will anybody take away the PDP structure from us. I hear that there are some governors who said they will take away the structure and give it to somebody. I pity those governors because I will put fire in their states. When God has given you peace, you said you don’t want peace; whatever you see, you take.”

In response, Abdullahi revealed that Wike is among those against whom party members have filed petitions for alleged anti-party activities.

The Disciplinary Committee has formally invited Wike to appear before them to respond to these allegations. “We have received petitions regarding anti-party activities from across the country. These petitions have been aggregated, and Nyesom Wike is one of the persons expected to face that committee, which is headed by High Chief Tom Ikimi,” Abdullahi stated.

He also commended the current party leadership for its commitment to fairness, noting that they have refrained from sanctioning members without giving them an opportunity to be heard, contrasting this approach with the previous administration under Senator Iyorchia Ayu.

When asked about Wike’s recent threats against governors over the Rivers State crisis, Abdullahi clarified that Wike was likely referring to Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who is also the chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum.

Abdullahi suggested that Wike’s comments were disappointing and that he should have been more cautious with his words. “It was a very disappointing remark; we were not expecting him to say that, and we are not with him on that,” Abdullahi said.

Despite the ongoing conflict, Abdullahi expressed confidence that the PDP would overcome this challenge, noting that the party has successfully navigated more delicate issues in the past. He affirmed that the current impasse is just another hurdle the party will eventually surmount.

I never said I’d be VP to anyone in 2027 – Peter Obi

I never said I’d be VP to anyone in 2027 – Peter Obi

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi has denied saying he has agreed on a deal to become a vice-presidential candidate in the 2027 elections.

He also said that contrary to reports, he remains committed to the Labour Party and that anyone looking for a collaboration must state their true intentions.

In a series of posts via his official X handle on Saturday, September 14, Obi said he is ready to partner with those who share his vision for advancing Nigeria’s progress. He emphasised he is not desperate to become president or any position, but is determined to see Nigeria develop.

According to the former Anambra State Governor, he does not want to be one of those preoccupied with 2027 while Nigerians are suffering from hunger, poverty, insecurity, and other pressing challenges.

“I have been inundated with calls and concerns regarding the interview I granted to News Central TV. In that interview, I took the opportunity it provided to explain my position in detail. However, some fifth columnists have resorted to propaganda, deliberately distorting the narrative.

Let me reiterate clearly what I said, which is on record. I do not want to be one of those preoccupied with 2027 while Nigerians are suffering from hunger, poverty, insecurity, and other pressing challenges.

I explicitly stated my openness to working with others, provided their intentions were not centred on state capture. I emphasized my commitment to partnering with those who share my vision for advancing Nigeria’s progress.” he said

He further stated that he is committed to bringing millions of out-of-school children back into classrooms.

“I also made it clear that I remain committed to the Labour Party, and if anyone wishes to negotiate or join forces, they must disclose their true intentions. When 2027 arrives, if I decide to run for any office, it will not be with those whose sole aim is state capture or merely winning an election.

I want them to explain how we will ensure that no child is left behind and how we will bring millions of out-of-school children back into classrooms, ensure healthy living and pull people out of poverty.

My statement was unequivocal, and I am genuinely surprised by the misrepresentation of my words. For the avoidance of doubts, I never stated at any time that I would be vice president to anyone and it’s unequivocal.

I have consistently maintained that I am open to working with those committed to building a new Nigeria. My commitment to Nigeria remains steadfast, and I even believe it is possible to contribute to its progress without occupying any office as I am already doing” he said
