Sexual scandal: Nigerian university to mount CCTV in classrooms, offices

Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State, is installing Close Circuit Television (CCTV) in offices and classrooms to reduce sexual harassment of students by lecturers.

The institution’s officials also intend to create Operation Speak Out, which will allow victims to reveal the perpetrators.

The vice chancellor of the university, Prof. Charles Esimone, said the initiatives were meant to checkmate the unruly activities in the university.

On the ‘operation speak out’, which would soon be launched, Esimone said it was necessary because most students were afraid that the lecturers might victimize them more if they talked.

JAMB releases 2024 UTME original result slips (see how to print)

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially announced the release of original result slips for candidates who participated in the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

This was revealed in a statement on JAMB verified X handle.

It stated, “Candidates who sat the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) can now print their original result slips. These slips, which feature the candidate’s photograph and advanced security features.”

How to Print JAMB Original Result

Follow the steps below to print out the original UTME result on JAMB portal:

1. Login to your JAMB profile through https://efacility.jamb.gov.ng/.

2. Once logged in, you will be taken to a page where you will see all available services.

3. Click on “Print Result Slip”.

4. Review the details displayed on the Confirmation Page.

5. Select your desired payment method and proceed with the payment

6. After payment, login to jamb portal, click on My Payments you will see it in the menu sidebar. Then click on get status. If your payment is approved, click on CONTINUE.

7. You will be directed to the result printing page.

8. You will be asked to provide the following: Year of Exam and JAMB Registration Number.

9. After entering the information correctly, you can now print the Result Slip.

Once more it’s very important to note that the steps above will work since the JAMB Original result is officially out. You should also use a desktop computer or laptop, although it will work on some mobile phones. Finally, we recommend you use a Google Chrome browser.

27 students of Osun poly expelled over protest against EFCC

No fewer than twenty-seven Higher National Diploma (HND) students from the Federal Polytechnic Ede in Osun state have been suspended for two semesters, while two former Student Union leaders have been banned from the campus.

This disciplinary action follows a riotous protest against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The incident began when EFCC operatives raided hostels in Owode Ede, a neighbouring community to Ede, and arrested over 70 suspected internet fraudsters.

In response, some students protested at the EFCC zonal office in Ibadan, which escalated into a violent demonstration on campus, resulting in property damage.

The students accused the school management of failing to secure the release of the arrested students

Following the unrest, the school’s management established a panel to investigate those involved in the protests and suspended student union activities.

The institution’s media director, Sola Lawal, confirmed the suspension of the 27 HND students involved in the riotous protest.

He said: “The management of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede Osun state constituted an investigation committee to unravel the miseries surrounding the Student’s crisis/rampage of Thursday, May 9th, 2024 leading to the stoning of people at the senior staff club.

“The unprovoked attitude led to the vandalization of individual and institution’s properties. This unwarranted action negates the motto of the great citadel which the institution is known for after a painstaking and thorough investigation.

“27 students of HND 1 and 2 have been expelled, 8 HND II students have been suspended for two academic sessions while 2 former students union leadership were banned from entering the two campuses of the institution.”

ASUP suspends planned strike after meeting with Education minister

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) announced on Monday the suspension of its planned strike over the newly released scheme of service for polytechnics.

This decision follows engagements with the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman.

The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) had unveiled new schemes of service on June 19, 2024, which were approved by the Federal Government to take effect from June 7, 2024. However, ASUP opposed the new schemes, alleging a lack of inclusive stakeholder input, particularly from their union and other stakeholders in the polytechnic sector.

In response, ASUP issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, effective from July 8, 2024, demanding the suspension of the new scheme of work or facing diverse forms of industrial action.

Following a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, ASUP released a statement explaining their decision to suspend the planned strike.

“Within the 15-day period, our union’s leadership was invited to a tripartite meeting with the leadership of the NBTE and the Federal Ministry of Education on July 19, where it was resolved that the implementation of the flawed document be suspended and a review process be initiated in line with the demands of our Union,” the statement read.

The NBTE immediately suspended the document through a circular addressed to Chairmen, Governing Councils, Rectors, and Provosts of the institutions on the same day. Following this development, ASUP’s NEC reconvened on July 22 to review their earlier position.

“The NEC therefore resolved to suspend the earlier scheduled industrial action in recognition of the fact that the demands of the Union have been met substantially. We appreciate our members’ steadfastness in the face of the unearned provocation; the intervention and inputs of different stakeholders, including Rectors of Polytechnics, sister staff Unions, and the students through the National Association of Polytechnic Students,” the statement continued.

ASUP has committed to dedicating energy and time in the coming days to preparations for the review exercise to produce a document that will reflect the aspirations of the sector.
