Supreme Court’s judgment: Tinubu has done well – Gov Otti
Governor Alex Otti of Abia, on Friday, commended President Bola Tinubu for his non-interference with the judgment delivered in different election matters by the Supreme Court.
Otti made the commendation on Friday, while reacting to the apex court’s verdict that affirmed his election as governor in the March 18, 2023 General Elections.
He spoke in an interaction with newsmen in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.
He thanked Tinubu for remaining firm in his resolve to ensure that the judiciary remains independent.
According to the governor, this gesture has made the judicial process to produce positive results in the country.
“If he did not do that, some of the judgments and verdicts that were given today might have been different.
“That is why today the NNPP governor in Kano State was returned, though he lost at the lower tribunal and Appeal Court.
“I want to encourage the president to continue in that light.

“I believe that his non intervention in the judicial process has produced positive results in the country today.
“A few places where people were getting ready to burn down places today, they have shelved their plots because the rule of law prevailed,’’ Otti said.
He also commended the judiciary for remaining firm and not allowing the people’s will to be truncated by desperate politicians.
He said that the development had indeed reaffirmed that “the judiciary remains the last hope of the common man”.
The governor thanked the governorship candidates in Abia, especially those who did not go to court, for being supportive as well as the men of God, who kept praying for him and Abia Government.
“I want to invite everyone, including my opponents who were in court with me, to say now that the battle is over, you have no choice but to sheath your sword.
“I invite you to come with every good idea you have, let us sit down and discuss because the most important thing is Abia.
“Anybody that has anything to contribute to the positive development of the state is welcomed, irrespective of their political, ethnic and religious leanings, we are one and the same people.
“From now on, division cannot be allowed in Abia. We are all in one boat.
“Anybody who wants the good of our state should join us in this boat and the boat is large enough to accept and receive everyone,” Otti said.
He thanked God for the victory as well as the people of Abia for supporting him in his effort to rescue Abia from maladministration.

Bamidele emphasized the legislature’s dedication to addressing fuel scarcity and long queues at filling stations, highlighting plans to engage additional private-sector entities in constructing new refineries.
“The Senate is working to ensure that more private-sector players are licensed to own and operate refineries. This is to support other smaller ones that are springing up in several parts of the country.

EFCC insists on naira, bans foreign currencies at embassies
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has directed that the Naira should be the only legal tender for transactions at foreign embassies in Nigeria.
The Commission also banned the use of dollars for business transactions and payment of other services at foreign missions in the country.
This was revealed in a letter dated April 5, 2024, addressed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and his Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the EFCC, Nigerian foreign missions abroad were also directed to accept naira in their financial businesses.
The EFCC also mentioned that the directives would help in combating the dollarization of the Nigerian economy and the depreciation of the naira.

In the letter, the Chairman of the Commission, Ola Olukoyede, further expressed sadness over the invoicing of consular services in Nigeria by foreign missions in dollars.
Olukoyede said: “I present to you the compliments of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and wish to notify you about the commission’s observation, with dismay, regarding the unhealthy practice by some foreign missions to invoice consular services to Nigerians and other foreign nationals in the country in the United States dollar.
“This practice is an aberration and unlawful as it conflicts with existing laws and financial regulations in Nigeria. Section 20(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007 makes currencies issued by the apex bank the only legal tender in Nigeria.
“It states that ‘the currency notes issued by the Bank shall be the legal tender in Nigeria on their face value for the payment of any amount’.
“This presupposes that any transaction in currencies other than the naira anywhere in Nigeria contravenes the law and is, therefore, illegal.”
