Varsities workers threaten fresh industrial action over withheld salaries

Two key unions within Nigeria’s tertiary education sector have issued a stern warning to the federal government, demanding the payment of their four months’ withheld salaries within the next two weeks to avoid potential strike.

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) conveyed their grievances in a letter addressed to the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, on Thursday in Abuja.

In their letter, titled “Re-Four Months Withheld Salaries: Demand for Immediate Payment,” NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi and SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim expressed their frustration over the unpaid wages. They reminded the Minister of the unions’ previous one-week warning strike, which occurred from March 18 to March 24, as a protest against the withholding of salaries from May to August 2022.

The unions highlighted the series of correspondences and assurances they had received regarding the payment, noting their disappointment that the issue remains unresolved. They accused the government of insincerity and neglect toward the welfare of their members.

“The government has ignored the principles of collective bargaining and fostered an environment of distrust,” the unions stated. They emphasized that the ongoing silence and non-payment of salaries are causing significant unrest among their members across universities and inter-university centers.

The unions warned that the continued delay in payment is jeopardizing industrial peace and harmony on campuses. “We can no longer ensure industrial peace and harmony in university campuses,” they declared, demanding immediate payment of the withheld salaries within two weeks. Failure to meet this demand, they cautioned, would compel them to initiate a complete shutdown of universities and inter-university centres.

JUST IN: JAMB releases UTME supplementary results

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has released the results of candidates who participated in the supplementary Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination conducted between June 21 and 22, 2024.

This board’s spokesperson, Dr Fabian Benjamin, stated this in a statement in Abuja on Friday.

According to JAMB, 28,835 applicants who were not able to provide biometric verification during the main 2024 UTME took the supplementary exam.

In a similar vein, the board stated that students who were given a second opportunity to take the exam but were suspected of engaging in examination misconduct during the main UTME comprised the other category of candidates.

“The exercise, which recorded a huge success nationwide, was marked by heightened security measures put in place by the board to preclude any instance of examination infractions.

“As such, some nefarious characters who had attempted to impersonate bona fide candidates were apprehended and handed over to law enforcement agencies for further investigation and prosecution,” the board noted.

It said it will continue to ensure that no candidate benefits from any acts of infractions through the deployment of state-of-the-art technology before, during, and after its examinations.

JAMB, therefore, urged candidates, in their interest, to refrain from engaging in any form of irregularity during their examinations.

The board also prohibited applicants from soliciting score upgrades from fraudsters or mutilating their result sheets to manufacture fraudulent result sheets with higher scores.

It also advised candidates to check their supplementary UTME results by texting UTMERESULT to either 55019 or 66019, using the same phone number they used to obtain their profile codes at the start of registration.

FG, ASUU in crucial meeting over fresh lecturers strike

The Federal Government has met with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in a bid to avert a proposed strike by the union.

The meeting was held in Wednesday behind closed doors at the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja.

Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, expressed optimism that all issues raised would be resolved.

President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodoke, said the proposed strike by the union could be averted if words are matched with action.

Last week, the ASUU Gashua branch in Yobe State, asked the Federal Government to address the lingering issues affecting universities to avoid another disruption of academic activities on campuses.

Chairman of the branch, Melemi Abatcha, during a press briefing at Damaturu the state capital on Thursday outlined funding for the revitalisation of Nigerian public universities, and the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement as the major issues plaguing the educational sector.

“Funding for the revitalisation of Nigeria public universities i.e. improved infrastructure, conducive teaching/learning environments, students and staff accommodation, equipping of laboratories and libraries. Consequently, the Academic Staff of Nigerian Universities have remained on the same salary structure since 2009.

“Even with the directive of Federal Executive Council (FEC) for removal of ASUU from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) platform since December 2023 till now, ASUU members are still being paid via the obnoxious platform (IPPIS),” he said in a statement.

Among other issues highlighted include university autonomy, the proliferation of public universities, the backlog of earning academic allowances amounting to N50bn, and the withheld three-and-a-half months’ salaries of its members across the country.

In an attempt to forestall an industrial action by ASUU, Nigeria Union of Journalists has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to urgently address the pending issue with the Academic Staff Union of Universities before it snowballs into another major crisis.
