We’re better under Buhari despite recent killings – Zulum

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, says records of the security situation in the troubled state have shown that they are better under the Buhari administration than during the President Goodluck Jonathan administration.

He said records taken from 2011 from the 27 local government areas of the state indicated that Buhari had performed better in the handling of Borno’s security challenges.

The governor made this declaration while addressing northern elders from the Arewa Consultative Forum in Maiduguri.

The ACF led by the Chairman of the forum’s board of trustee, Ambassador Shehu Malami, and the forum’s Executive Chairman, Chief Audu Ogbeh, had visited to pay condolences on the government and people of Borno State over the killing of over 40 rice farmers in Zabarmari, a farming community in Jere Local Government Area of Borno State.

Zulum said, “From statewide statistics on affairs in the 27 local government areas since 2011, the fact is that despite the recent happenings in Borno State, the security situation in Borno State and indeed that of the entire North-East subregion is still far better under Buhari, and this is based on records.

“For instance, unlike the years before Buhari when a number of local government were no-go-areas, we now have citizens led by our traditional rulers, safely back to Bama, Gwoza, Askira-Uba, Dikwa, Ngala, Monguno, Kukawa, Damboa, Konduga, Mafa, all of which no one could visit not to talk of living there.

“Our emirs were all in exile. Today, Bama is coming back to life and so is Askira-Uba, Damboa, Gwoza and others. Live is even returning to normal in Baga. This was impossible before Buhari.”

He said it was not possible to move few kilometres out of Maiduguri because that the insurgents were so bold to attack and take over military facilities like the army barracks at Monguno, Bama, Giwa and the Multinational Joint Task Force Headquarters at Baga.

“There were daily attacks by bomb blasts in many parts of Maiduguri, the most populated part of the state but all of these have stopped under Buhari. These are the records and no one can dispute these records,” Zulum said.

He, however, said it was human nature to be more concerned about current realities than comparing the past with the present.

“The insurgents by their nature always want to attract publicity which is very strategic for terror propaganda, so they resorted to attacking our communities and running away and of course this worries us,” he said.

North Central Support Group rejects Northern Elders, pledges allegiance to Asiwaju

In a dramatic turn of events, the North Central States Support Group has taken a bold stance against the Northern Elders, disavowing their recent statement and reaffirming their support for key political figures, notably president Ahmed Bola Tinubu.

In a statement jointly signed by both the Chairman of the group, Hon. Joseph Maiwada and the secretary Hon. Abraham Stephen Narai
Secretary, sent to Daily Sun on Wednesday minced no words as he declared, “We unequivocally dissociate ourselves from their agenda which is driven by greed and selfish interest.”

“Going through their statement it became clear to us that they have an ulterior agenda and cannot honestly substantiate the lies they are using as front to achieve their agenda. Their motive has failed even before it took off. We are wiser now and it will be difficult for anyone to toast us around in the name of talking for us.”

“The greed of a few is certainly not binding on the majority of us who are patriotic and genuinely want the country to work for all of us.”

“While the Northern Elders express skepticism and criticism, the North Central Support Group emphasizes tangible improvements and the efforts of leaders like Sen. Gorge Akume.”

Sen. Gorge Akume’s leadership is lauded by the group as a beacon of progress. “We note the effort that our Leader H.E Sen. Gorge Akume has put to help this government which is yielding results already,” remarked a spokesperson for the group. This endorsement adds weight to Akume’s political stature in the region.

“It is a miscarriage of realty for the said group of Elders to assume their selfish interest is universal and serves all.

Daily Sun reports that Observers speculate about the potential implications of this rift on the upcoming political landscape. Will it lead to further fragmentation or catalyze a realignment of interests within the North.

IMF predicts 3.3% growth for Nigeria’s economy in 2024

IMF predicts 3.3% growth for Nigeria’s economy in 2024

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has adjusted upwards it’s forecast for Nigeria’s economic growth for the year 2024 to 3.3 percent.

This revision was announced in the IMF’s World Economic Outlook for April, which was released on Tuesday during the 2024 Spring Meetings of the World Bank and IMF in Washington, United States.

The updated forecast marks an increase of 0.3 percentage points from the previous 3.0 per cent growth prediction published in the IMF’s January 2024 World Economic Outlook.

However, the IMF has taken a more conservative stance for the year 2025, reducing Nigeria’s economic growth forecast to 3.0 per cent, a slight decrease from the 3.1 percent projected earlier in January.

Within the broader Sub-Saharan Africa region, the IMF has maintained its 3.8 per cent economic growth forecast for 2024 but has revised the 2025 forecast downward to 4.0 per cent, from the previously projected 4.1 percent.

The global economic outlook also received a modest boost, with the IMF raising its growth forecast for 2024 to 3.2 percent, up from the 3.1 percent projected in the January 2024 World Economic Outlook. The forecast for 2025 remains unchanged at 3.2 percent.

The IMF stated, “Global growth, estimated at 3.2 per cent in 2023, is projected to continue at the same pace in 2024 and 2025.

“The projection for 2024 is revised up by 0.1 percentage point from the January 2024 WEO Update and by 0.3 percentage point to the October 2023 WEO forecast. Nevertheless, the projection for global growth in 2024 and 2025 is below the historical (2000–19) annual average of 3.8 per cent, reflecting restrictive monetary policies and withdrawal of fiscal support, as well as low underlying productivity growth.

The report further elaborates on the expected trends in various economies.

“Advanced economies are expected to see growth rise slightly, with the increase mainly reflecting a recovery in the euro area from low growth in 2023, whereas emerging market and developing economies are expected to experience stable growth through 2024 and 2025, with regional differences.”

Specifically for sub-Saharan Africa, the IMF projects an increase in growth from an estimated 3.4 per cent in 2023 to 3.8 per cent in 2024 and 4.0 per cent in 2025.

This positive outlook is attributed to the diminishing impact of previous weather shocks and gradual improvements in supply issues.

The forecast for 2024 remains consistent with the January 2024 WEO update, as negative adjustments for Angola due to a contraction in the oil sector are largely balanced by positive revisions for Nigeria.
