Senate queries Lai Mohammed’s N19m int’l trip expenses during lockdown

The Senate Committee on Information and National Orientation has queried the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, over the ministry’s spending of N19m on international travel during the COVID-19 lockdown.

The minister appeared before the Senate Committee on Tuesday to defend the 2021 budget estimates of his ministry.

Senator representing Imo East, Ezennwa Onyewuchi, had asked Mohammed how N19m out of the N43m meant for international travels in 2020 was utilised during the period of lockdown.

Onyewuchi said, “On international travels and transport you had N43m and you expended N19m.

“So, I am wondering this period of lockdown where nobody was able to go to any country during the 2020 appropriation. How were you able to embark on international travels and you expended N19m.”

The minister said the international travels were undertaken before the COVID-19 lockdown.

He said, “You will notice that N43m was budgeted but less than 40 per cent was spent precisely because of the COVID-19 and before then.

“Remember that we had travelled to attend several international summits starting UNWTO conference, UNESCO in Spain and in the UK. We also did advocacy in the UK at the same time. These were all before the lockdown.

“I think our last trip was actually in Addis Ababa, when we accompanied the President to the AU summit, and that was about March 2020 before the lockdown.

“The lockdown came at the end of March. So whatever we spent here was before the lockdown.”

The Senate panel also tackled the minister on a controversial project fully funded by the Ministry of Finance for execution by his ministry in the 2020 fiscal year.

The project was tagged ERPG 10145116, and was listed as “completion of NTA Gashua sub-station ongoing.”

The project had its allocation of N250m fully released to the ministry.

Chairman of the Senate Committee, Senator Abdullahi Sankara, said the minister had a lot of explanation to make over the project.

He said it was 100 per cent releases without any work commensurate to the full releases.

CBN cybersecurity levy will worsen Nigerians’ situation – PRP

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has condemned the cybersecurity levy imposed on electronic transfers by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), describing it as ill-timed and insensitive, especially considering the current economic challenges faced by Nigerians due to the Federal Government’s unpopular policies.

The PRP, in a statement signed by its acting national publicity secretary, Comrade Muhammed Ishaq, and made available to WITHIN NIGERIA, called on the CBN to withdraw the policy and implement measures to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.

The statement questions the timing of the levy and criticizes the government for collecting money from Nigerians to fund the Office of the National Security Adviser without ensuring transparency or accountability in the utilization of the funds.

The PRP condemns the CBN’s directive and warns that it will further worsen the financial difficulties faced by Nigerian citizens, particularly impacting vulnerable groups such as hardworking individuals, families, and small business owners.

The PRP calls on the CBN and the Nigerian Government to rescind the policy and focus on implementing measures that address the citizens’ concerns, including economic growth, job creation, and equitable distribution of resources. The party emphasizes its solidarity with the citizens and its commitment to fighting for a fairer and more prosperous future for all.

NLC kicks against introduction of cybersecurity levy

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly opposed the newly introduced 0.5% cybersecurity levy on all bank transactions.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) issued a circular on Monday announcing the levy on commercial, merchant, non-interest, and payment service banks. It will take effect two weeks from Monday, May 6, 2024.

According to the circular, the levy will be applied at the point of electronic transfer origination, with the deducted amount to be remitted by the financial institution. Customers will see this deduction reflected in their account with the narration, ‘Cybersecurity Levy’.

Reacting to this directive, NLC President Joe Ajaero issued a statement demanding the immediate withdrawal of the levy. He criticized it as another anti-people policy by the government, especially in the face of severe economic hardship.

Ajaero’s statement emphasized, “The Nigeria Labour Congress vehemently condemns the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN’s recent directive to levy a 0.5% ‘Cybersecurity Levy’ on electronic transfers.

“This levy, to be implemented by deduction at the transaction origination, is yet another burden on the shoulders of hardworking Nigerians.

“In the circular issued by the CBN, the directive mandates banks and payment service operators to affect these deductions, effective next two weeks. This move, ostensibly aimed at bolstering cybersecurity measures, threatens to exacerbate the financial strain already faced by the populace.”
