Biden ridiculed after saying he’s been supportive of Palestinians

Washington, DC – After the Israeli military bombed a school housing displaced people in central Gaza on Tuesday, a young man stood at the chaotic scene with a rocket fragment in his hand. “This is an Israeli American missile,” he said.

“We were stepping on corpses. I cannot describe the cruelty of what is happening,” the man said in a video verified by Al Jazeera after the attack in the Nuseirat area, which killed 17 civilians and injured dozens.

Such mass-casualty attacks have been a near-daily reality for Palestinians in Gaza for the past nine months. Officials and everyday people in the besieged territory have expressed outrage that the bombs decimating their lives are, in many cases, supplied by the United States as part of its alliance with Israel.

After air raids in the al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis killed at least 90 Palestinians last week, the Gaza Government Media Office blamed the US directly for the attack.

But US President Joe Biden has a different view of Washington’s role in the war.

“I’m the guy that did more for the Palestinian community than anybody,” he said in an interview that aired online on Monday.

“I’m the guy that opened up all the assets. I’m the guy that made sure that I got the Egyptians to open the border… I’m the guy that’s been able to pull together the Arab states to agree to help the Palestinians with food and shelter.”

He added, “I mean, I’ve been very supportive of the Palestinians.”

The US president’s assertion was met with ridicule by Palestinian rights advocates, who stressed that Biden’s unconditional support for Israel is fuelling a genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

“It’s hard to decide whether these comments by Biden were arrogant, blind or deceitful. It seems that he wants to take credit both for enabling the genocide and for letting Palestinians have a little bit of medicine and water and food,” said Amer Zahr, a Palestinian American comedian and activist.

Lexis Zeidan, a Detroit-based Palestinian American organiser, echoed that criticism.

“The only thing Biden did more for when it comes to Palestinians is increase their death toll with US-funded Israeli bombs,” she told Al Jazeera.

Armed by the US, the Israeli military has killed more than 38,000 Palestinians in Gaza and levelled large parts of the territory.

A self-proclaimed Zionist

In the same interview with journalist Speedy Morman, Biden re-asserted that he identifies as a Zionist.

“A Zionist is about whether or not Israel is a safe haven for Jews because of their history of how they’ve been persecuted,” he said.

The president then went on to ask the interviewer whether he knows what it means to be a Zionist.

Zionism is a Jewish nationalist ideology that emerged in Europe in the late 1800s, calling for the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine, where only a small minority of the population was Jewish at that time.

While the ideology’s supporters present it as a form of self-determination, many Palestinian rights advocates argue that Zionism has led to the dispossession and ongoing subjugation and oppression of Palestinians.

During the interview, Biden reiterated a position he often repeats while explaining his affinity for Israel: He claimed that Jews across the world would not be safe without the country.

“If there weren’t an Israel, every Jew in the world would be at risk,” he said.

Some activists say such remarks could be seen to perpetuate the anti-Semitic trope of “dual loyalty”: the idea that Jewish people must be loyal to Israel, whatever their background.

Eva Borgwardt, national spokesperson at IfNotNow, a youth-led Jewish-American progressive group, slammed the president’s comment.

“Many of us hear this repeated statement as a threat to our safety in this country. As president of the United States, it’s Biden’s job to make the US safe for everyone, including Jewish Americans,” Borgwardt told Al Jazeera in a statement.

“If he wants to keep Jews safe, he should focus on combating the real and present danger of white nationalism, instead of sending more bombs for Israel to prolong its assault on Gaza, which has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and left hostages to languish in captivity.”

US support for Israel

Zahr, the Palestinian American comedian, also slammed Biden for insisting that he is a Zionist.

“After nine months, he is still defiantly and proudly calling himself a Zionist. Well, in November, he’s going to see how that word makes us vote,” Zahr told Al Jazeera.

Due to his unwavering support for Israel, Biden has struggled with key constituencies in the Democratic Party, including young people, progressives, and Arab and Muslim Americans.

His electoral woes were exasperated after a disastrous debate performance in June, where he appeared exhausted and confused at times.

While Biden and top officials in his administration often underscore their backing of Israel, the president played down that support during the interview with Morman.

Ahmad Abuznaid, the executive director of the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights (USPCR), said Biden is claiming that he supports Palestinians because he understands that he has alienated voters in communities that support Palestinian rights.

“And so he attempted to make himself an ally of the movement when, in fact, what he’s doing is supporting the genocide of our people,” Abuznaid told Al Jazeera. “At this moment, he’s arming it. He’s defending it. He’s supporting it. And that’s how Palestinian Americans perceive President Biden and these comments. The comments are offensive. They’re disrespectful.”

Biden had boasted earlier this month that he is more popular in Israel than he is in the US. But when addressing the Arab vote with Morman, the US president falsely claimed that the US is only sending defensive weapons to Israel.

“I denied them offensive weapons that they were using, 2,000-pound (907kg) bombs and the rest,” he said.

While the US did stop a single shipment of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel this year, Biden administration officials have stressed that the transfer of other weapons has continued steadily on a regular basis.

In April, Biden signed off on $14bn in additional US military aid to Israel. And the Pentagon confirmed this week that 500-pound (226kg) bombs that were part of the suspended shipment have been separated and released to the US ally.

“Biden could stop this genocide today by turning off the tap of unlimited funds and weapons to Israel. But instead, he allows Netanyahu to do as he pleases, repeatedly calls himself a Zionist, and does what the emperor does — supports Israel unequivocally because Israel secures US interests in the Arab world,” said Hatem Abudayyeh, chair of the US Palestinian Community Network (USPCN).

“If Biden is our saviour, then who out there is our enemy?”

Trump Says Iran Agrees to Hand Over Enriched Uranium in Nuclear Deal Talks

United States President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran has agreed to surrender its remaining stockpile of enriched uranium and abandon any ambition of developing nuclear weapons, saying negotiations between both countries are “very close” to a breakthrough.

Speaking to reporters at the White House before departing for Las Vegas, Trump said ongoing diplomatic talks had reached an advanced stage, insisting Iran had agreed “to almost everything” in the proposed framework.

“We’re very close to making a deal with Iran. They’ve totally agreed that they will not have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said.

He further claimed that Iran had agreed to return what he repeatedly referred to as “nuclear dust,” a term he used to describe enriched uranium stockpiles believed to be stored in heavily fortified underground facilities.

“They’ve agreed to give us back the nuclear dust,” he added.

Trump also suggested that a fresh round of negotiations could take place over the weekend, while acknowledging uncertainty over the durability of the current ceasefire arrangement linked to wider tensions in the Middle East.

The comments come amid heightened diplomatic and military tensions in the region, following weeks of conflict that have disrupted global energy markets and raised concerns over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil shipping route.

However, Iranian authorities have not confirmed Trump’s claims. Officials in Tehran have previously rejected similar statements, insisting that no final agreement has been reached on key issues, including uranium enrichment levels and sanctions relief.

Recent diplomatic engagements involving intermediaries have reportedly focused on narrowing differences over Iran’s nuclear programme, but major sticking points remain unresolved. These include verification mechanisms for uranium stockpiles and the scope of any restrictions on enrichment activities.

Analysts say any potential agreement would require strict international monitoring to ensure compliance, particularly given the complexity of tracking enriched material stored in secure facilities.

The situation also carries broader geopolitical implications, with energy markets reacting sharply to tensions in the region. A sustained de-escalation could ease pressure on global oil prices and improve stability across major supply routes.

While the White House has signalled optimism about progress, no formal agreement has been announced, and diplomatic channels remain active as both sides continue discussions.

UK Court Jails Nigerian Couple Over £433,000 TfL Tax Fraud

A United Kingdom court has sentenced a Nigerian couple, Luciana and Femi Akanbi, to prison after uncovering a sophisticated tax rebate fraud scheme that cost authorities more than £433,000.

The couple were convicted at Woolwich Crown Court for orchestrating the fraud using stolen personal data belonging to employees of Transport for London, in a case described as one of the most serious internal data breaches linked to the agency.

Court proceedings revealed that the fraudulent activities took place between September 2021 and January 2022, during which confidential information belonging to at least 40 staff members—including passport details, National Insurance numbers, and banking records—was used to submit 139 false tax rebate claims to HM Revenue and Customs.

Prosecutors told the court that Luciana Akanbi, 38, who worked in the human resources department of Transport for London, had access to sensitive personal records of about 107 employees. This access enabled the couple to create multiple self-assessment accounts and process fraudulent claims.

While the total value of claims submitted approached £650,000, authorities confirmed that the actual financial loss stood at over £433,000, with the funds quickly moved through a complex money-laundering network.

Delivering judgment, Judge David Miller described the incident as the worst data breach ever experienced by Transport for London, noting that the organisation was forced to overhaul its systems as a result.

He stated that the scheme significantly impacted victims, many of whom had to deal with disrupted finances, damaged credit ratings, and prolonged engagements with tax authorities.

The court also heard that approximately £66,000 was traced to Femi Akanbi’s bank account, while about £16,000 was linked to Luciana, although the total benefit from the fraud was believed to be higher.

Prosecutor Andrew Evans described the operation as highly sophisticated, involving careful planning, multiple digital devices, and numerous victims. Investigations revealed that at least 38 electronic devices were used to execute the fraudulent claims.

Further evidence suggested that financial pressures contributed to the crime, with Femi Akanbi reportedly battling a gambling addiction following health challenges during the COVID-19 period. The court heard that over £50,000 of the stolen funds was channelled into gambling accounts.

Judge Miller rejected attempts by Luciana to shift blame, ruling that both defendants played central roles in the scheme, which was made possible by her position of trust within the organisation.

He also declined to issue a compensation order, citing the couple’s lack of recoverable assets, but indicated they may face deportation proceedings after serving their sentences.

In response, Transport for London said it has strengthened internal systems to prevent future breaches, while HM Revenue and Customs reiterated its commitment to tackling tax fraud and protecting public funds.

The case highlights growing concerns over identity theft, insider data breaches, and financial fraud, particularly within large organisations handling sensitive personal information.

Two Women Killed in Georgia Shootings as Nigerian-Born Suspect Faces Murder Charges

A 26-year-old United States citizen of Nigerian origin, Olaolukitan Adon Abel, has been arrested in connection with a series of shootings that claimed the lives of two women and left a man critically injured in the state of Georgia.

The incidents occurred across multiple locations, including DeKalb County and Brookhaven, sparking widespread concern among residents. Authorities have described the attacks as seemingly random, with no confirmed motive at this stage.

According to law enforcement officials, the shootings took place at a Checkers outlet on Wesley Chapel Road, a Kroger store at Cherokee Plaza in Brookhaven, and along Battle Forest Drive in DeKalb County.

Investigators were able to trace Abel through rental vehicle records, leading to his eventual arrest in Troup County. He is currently facing two counts of murder, along with charges of aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a weapon.

During a court hearing on Tuesday, a DeKalb County magistrate judge transferred the case to a superior court after the suspect’s legal team waived a formal reading of the charges. Details regarding his next court appearance have not yet been disclosed.

Authorities also revealed that this is not Abel’s first encounter with the law. He was previously convicted of a felony in California in 2024. In a separate case last year, he was arrested in Savannah and later pleaded guilty to four misdemeanor counts of sexual battery. He was subsequently sentenced to 48 months’ probation, banned from the city for four years, and ordered to undergo a psychosexual evaluation.

Court records from Chatham County confirm that Abel is a United States citizen.

Police officials have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat, emphasizing that the suspect is now in custody. Investigations remain ongoing as detectives continue to analyze evidence to determine the circumstances and motive behind the attacks.

“Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time,” a police spokesperson said, adding that authorities remain committed to ensuring justice and public safety.
