Again, protests rock Edo North over plan impeachment of Shaibu
Again, protests rock Edo North over plan impeachment of Shaibu
For the second time in two weeks, hundreds of members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), supporters, grassroots mobilizers, lovers and admirers of the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu, yesterday, trooped to the streets to peacefully protest the plan by members of the Edo State House of Assembly to impeach him on allegations they consider not only frivolous but a political vendetta.
The peaceful protesters under the aegis of Edo North PDP Rescue Movement, (ENREM), first converged at the popular Jattu Junction, Etsako West Local Government, with placards in the early hours of the day and later marched round the major streets of the Local Government before converging at the popular Jattu Junction where they addressed the press.
The protesters bore placards with inscriptions such as “We say no to impeachment of Philip Shaibu”; “We Say no to the persecution of Philip Shaibu”; “Shaibu should be rewarded for his loyalty, not persecution”; “The silence of PDP NWC is suspicious, speak out now” and “Give peace a chance”, amongst others.
The advised the Edo State House of Assembly to focus on providing good legislative governance for Edo people which they represent, rather than engage in fruitless ventures of impeachment that brings no food to the table of hungary Edo people who suffer the brunt of bad governance and poor representation in the State.
Besides, the protesters, particularly, reminded the Speaker of the State House Assembly, Rt. Hon Blessing Agbebaku, to listen to the voice of reason rather than work against the interest of Afemai, his own people who elected him to represent their interest.
Addressing journalists, Leader of the protesters, Hon Festus Owu, accused those behind the impeachment as those who in the past benefited from the good gesture and kindness of Philip Shaibu.

He condemned the roles of the State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki in the impeachment, reminding him of the inalienable and fundamental rights of Shaibu to express his desire to be elected governor of the State.
“Any party that wants to win election must believe in coherence, must believe in resolving the problem facing them and not exacerbate it. Every man has the right to contest an election, Philip Shaibu has expressed his willingness to contest to be Edo State Governor and anyone stopping it is deliberately returning the State to the era of godfatherism”, Owu said and reminded the Governor of his statement made few years ago that anybody, including himself should be stoned whenever he makes attempt to become a godfather in the State but however said that Mr. Governor won’t be stoned but left to be tormented by his own conscience.
Owu also told Agbebaku “not to become a puppet and rubber stamp Speaker in the hands of enemies of our State who do not mean well for the people”, just as he tackled the leadership of the PDP National Working Committee.
He described their silence as questionable, unacceptable and acceptance of being part of the ongoing evil in the State, saying that their silence is a clear leadership failure. He told the party to do the needful and save the party from imminent collapse.
“If you tell a man not to farm in your farmland, it does not mean he will not farm that year. What the state desires now than ever is peace”, Owu said, adding that all stakeholders should join hands with the Governor and the Deputy to ensure peace in the state and in unity collectively mobilize support across the State to win the governorship election.
Recall that Shaibu has been at the receiving end following his move to succeed his boss, Governor Godwin Obaseki in office. Against all odds, in a parallel election, Shaibu contested the party’s primary held February 22 where he was declared winner by delegates from across the 18 Local Government Areas of the state.

Bandit leader who forced community to give him chieftaincy title, 2 other kingpins killed in Zamfara
Three bandit kingpins terrorizing Zamfara State, along with some of their fighters, have been killed by a joint security taskforce operating in the state.
According to security expert and counter insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, the bandit kingpins included Kachalla Mati, Jammo Baki, and a former police officer, Kachalla Yada.
In a post on X handle Saturday morning, Zagazola Makama said: “Update: Security Intelligence, in joint efforts with the Militia Joint Task Force, have neutralized 3 bandit kingpins in the North West on April 26, 2024.
The kingpins included Kachillaha Mati, Jammo Baki, and one other ex-police personnel, Kachallah Yada, as well as several other fighters in Tidibale in Gangara villages of ISA and Sabon Birnin LG Zamfara State.
Jammo was very dangerous and ruthless, to the extent that he forced the community to give him a chieftaincy title.
On the other hand, Kachallah Yadda, who was an ex-police officer, is in charge of training the bandit on weapons handling as well as illicit arms trafficking.
The ‘suyanization” of the three terrorists was a huge blow to the bandits in Zamfara State and a relief to the people of the North West.

This also got to show that the initiative of the Zamfara state government in collaboration with the security forces since it vowed to never negotiate with bandits but to crush them by any means is yielding positive results.
The recruitment of the Civilian Joint Task Force, popularly known as Askarawa, to go after the bandits in their enclaves and their hideouts was a major game changer.
Just like in the case of the North East, the worst nightmare of the bandits are the “Askarawa,” or Yansakai, as they are popularly called. This was because they have knowledge of the terrain and know the bandits who have in the past operated openly with impunity.
Within the past few months, the Askarawas have captured and killed hundreds of bandits, their informants, and collaborators. They have also recovered thousands of livestock rustled by the bandits, as well as rescued dozens of abducted victims.
This was why the pressure mounted on the bandits in both military, air, and ground offensives is forcing them to beg for “negotiations” through several videos on social media.”
Attempts by PlatinumPost reporters to confirm the killings of the terrorists by relevant security bodies have not yielded the desired results as of the time of filing this report.
