#EkitiDecides2026: APC Leads Early Results as Vote Counting Begins

Vote counting has commenced across polling units in Ekiti State as the governorship election enters a critical phase, with electoral officials sorting and tallying ballots cast by voters under the watchful eyes of party agents, election observers and security personnel.

Across several polling centres where voting had concluded, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) began counting votes and announcing results at the polling-unit level before transmitting and moving them to ward collation centres in line with electoral guidelines.

One of the first results to emerge came from Polling Unit 031, Ward 9, in Ado-Ekiti Local Government Area, where counting was completed following a peaceful voting process.

According to the result announced at the polling unit, the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured 86 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) polled 36 votes. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) received five votes.

The polling unit has a total of 782 registered voters, with 128 voters accredited and casting their ballots during the election.

Similar counting exercises were ongoing at other polling units across Ado-Ekiti and other parts of the state as electoral officials continued sorting ballot papers and recording results.

At Polling Unit 015, Ward 9, which has 610 registered voters, officials commenced counting shortly after voting ended. The same process was underway at Polling Unit 009, Ward 10, where election officers began tallying votes cast by eligible voters.

Vote counting was also in progress at Polling Unit 017, Ward 9, which has 893 registered voters, while officials at Polling Unit 003, Ward 9, with 1,232 registered voters, were similarly sorting and counting ballots after the close of polls.

The commencement of vote counting followed a largely peaceful election across many parts of Ekiti State, with voters turning out to elect a governor who will lead the state for the next four years.

Earlier in the day, election observers reported orderly voting in most polling units, while security agencies maintained a strong presence to ensure the process remained peaceful and credible.

Across the state, party agents closely monitored the counting process, scrutinising every ballot and result sheet as required by electoral regulations. Many voters also remained at polling units to observe the counting and announcement of results.

INEC officials are expected to electronically transmit results where applicable and physically move result sheets to designated ward collation centres before further collation at local government and state levels.

The governorship election is being conducted across Ekiti State’s 16 local government areas, with political parties expressing confidence in their chances as votes continue to be counted.

Attention is now shifting to the collation centres, where results from polling units will be aggregated to determine the overall outcome of the election.

While early polling-unit results have started to emerge, the final outcome of the election will only be determined after the completion of collation and official declaration of results by INEC, the body constitutionally empowered to announce the winner.

As counting continues across the state, residents, political stakeholders and observers remain on edge, awaiting the results of one of Nigeria’s most closely watched off-cycle governorship elections.

Ekiti 2026: Governor Oyebanji Sweeps Polling Unit with 326 Votes as PDP Records Zero

Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has kicked off his re-election bid with a commanding victory at his own polling unit, delivering a crushing defeat to opposition parties in his hometown of Ikogosi-Ekiti. According to the official results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) , Governor Oyebanji polled 326 votes at Polling Unit 003, Ward 06, located directly opposite his family compound in Okelele, Ikogosi, within the Ekiti West Local Government Area of the state. The result, declared by INEC Presiding Officer Odeyemi Deji, showed the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in an unassailable lead, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) , which is widely regarded as the main opposition party, failed to secure a single vote at the unit.

A full breakdown of the polling unit results confirms the APC’s overwhelming dominance at PU 003, Ward 06, Ikogosi-Ekiti. The All Progressives Congress (APC) secured 326 votes, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) managed only 2 votes, the Action Democratic Party (ADP) got 1 vote, and the African Action Congress (AAC) also recorded 1 vote. In a stunning setback for the main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scored zero votes at the unit, along with all other minor parties that failed to register any presence.

Governor Oyebanji arrived at the polling unit at approximately 11:38 a.m. on election day, accompanied by his wife, Professor Olayemi Oyebanji. After casting his ballot, the Governor expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of the electoral process and urged voters across the state to remain patient as INEC officials continued collating results from various wards. In a brief chat with journalists after voting, Oyebanji expressed confidence in securing a second term, noting that the APC is targeting an ambitious 500,000 votes across the state. He commended the electorate for their orderly behaviour and praised INEC for the seamless deployment of electoral materials to polling units, describing the exercise as one of the most peaceful he had witnessed.

The resounding win at PU 003 is being interpreted by political observers as a sign of strong grassroots support for the Governor in his home base. With zero votes recorded for the PDP in this unit, the result underscores the dominance of the APC in the Ekiti West region and sets the tone for the rest of the collation process across the state’s 16 local government areas. Political analysts note that such a commanding performance in the Governor’s own polling unit could signal a broader wave of support that may translate into a strong overall performance once all results are fully collated and announced by INEC.

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose

#EkitiDecides2026: Fayose Predicts Landslide Victory for Oyebanji

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, on Saturday expressed confidence that Governor Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) would emerge victorious in the ongoing Ekiti governorship election, declaring that the incumbent governor had already secured the mandate of the people.

Fayose made the remarks after casting his vote at St. David’s Primary School in Afao-Ekiti, Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area, where he praised the conduct of the election and the turnout of voters.

The former governor arrived at the polling unit, which also serves as the ward collation centre, alongside his son, Bolu Fayose, the APC House of Assembly candidate for Irepodun/Ifelodun Constituency II.

Speaking with journalists shortly after voting, Fayose described the electoral process as peaceful, orderly and significantly improved compared to previous elections.

“So far, so good. There are no incidents, no issues and no disruptions. What we are witnessing closely resembles a credible process. INEC is alert to its responsibilities, and this represents an improvement on previous exercises,” he said.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain said developments across the state and the mood of the electorate indicated that Governor Biodun Oyebanji was on course for a convincing victory.

“Oyebanji has already won the election if you look at the state of affairs in Ekiti and the body language of the people. I am predicting an overwhelming victory for him,” Fayose stated.

The former governor’s prediction is in line with his consistent support for Oyebanji’s re-election bid. Despite remaining a prominent figure in the PDP, Fayose has repeatedly praised the governor’s leadership style, performance in office and ability to foster political inclusiveness across party lines.

In the months leading to the election, Fayose openly backed Oyebanji’s second-term ambition, arguing that the governor had earned widespread support from residents through his developmental initiatives and governance approach.

Fayose also commended security agencies deployed for the election, noting that their professionalism contributed to the peaceful atmosphere witnessed across polling units.

“They are doing very well. You can see that they have adequate personnel on the ground. They have conducted themselves professionally and have not taken sides in the exercise,” he said.

He urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to accept the outcome of the election and prioritize the continued development of the state.

According to him, once the electoral process is concluded, all stakeholders should unite behind efforts to advance governance, economic growth and infrastructure development in Ekiti.

The Ekiti governorship election is being closely monitored nationwide, with the ruling APC seeking to retain control of the state while opposition parties attempt to unseat the incumbent administration.

However, despite Fayose’s prediction, only the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has the constitutional authority to declare the official winner after the completion of voting, collation and announcement of results.

As voting continues in parts of the state, attention remains focused on the outcome of the election and whether Oyebanji’s perceived popularity will translate into a decisive victory at the polls.

Ekiti Decides 2026: Oyebanji, Oluyede, Bejide Clash as 10 Parties Battle for Governorship

Voters across Ekiti State are heading to the polls today, Saturday, June 20, 2026, to elect a governor who will lead the state for the next four years. Ten political parties are in the race to stop the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in today’s governorship election, in a contest poised to test political strength, governance record, and voter sentiment across the state’s 16 local government areas. The election is one of Nigeria’s seven off-cycle governorship contests and is taking place across 177 wards and 2,445 polling units, with electoral officials, security agencies, and political parties declaring their readiness for the exercise.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) , 1,059,360 registered voters are expected to participate in the election. Of this number, 1,028,929 have collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) , representing a collection rate of 97.1 percent. INEC has completed the distribution of sensitive and non-sensitive election materials, while ad hoc staff and electoral officers have undergone training ahead of the poll. Voting is scheduled to commence at 8:00 a.m. across all polling units. Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), have deployed personnel across the state to maintain law and order throughout the electoral process.

Fourteen candidates are contesting the election on the platforms of various political parties. However, most political analysts regard the race as effectively a three-way contest between the APC, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) , and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) , with other parties having largely faded from serious contention. The full list of candidates includes: Governor Biodun Oyebanji (APC); Dr Wole Oluyede (PDP); Ambassador Dare Bejide (ADC); Opeyemi Falegan (Accord); Omotosho Matthew Olu (AA); Olajuyin Ikusayede Gbegbe Oyebanji (LP); Abegunde Ayobami Blessing (NNPP); Akande Oluwasegun Samuel (AAC); Ayodeji Ojo (ADP); Anifowose Joseph Olanrewaju (APM); Awogbemi Bidemi Olaiya (APP); Ayodele Olaniyi Olanrewaju Praise (PRP); Osinkolu Olusegun Ayodele (YPP); and Adetunji Victor Damilola (ZLP). Notably, no political party nominated a woman as its governorship candidate. Women were represented only as deputy governorship candidates, with four parties—the ADP, APC, APM, and PRP—fielding female running mates.

Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji is seeking a second four-year term on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), with his deputy, Monisade Afuye, retained as running mate. If re-elected, Oyebanji would become the first governor in Ekiti’s history to win two consecutive terms, as no incumbent has won re-election since the state elected Adeniyi Adebayo as its first governor in 1999. Oyebanji enters the poll as the clear favourite. He won the 2022 governorship election with 187,057 votes, defeating Segun Oni of the SDP and Bisi Kolawole of the PDP. His administration’s six-point Shared Prosperity Agenda, focused on education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, economic growth, and social welfare, has earned broad approval among civil servants, pensioners, youths, and vulnerable groups. His re-election bid has attracted significant endorsements from across the political spectrum. All four former governors of the state—Adeniyi Adebayo, Olusegun Oni, Ayodele Fayose, and Kayode Fayemi—have thrown their support behind Oyebanji. The APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, declared at the party’s campaign flag-off that the governor had effectively secured victory ahead of the election, stating, “Take a bow because you have won already.” The APC controls all nine National Assembly seats, all 26 seats in the State House of Assembly, all 16 local government councils, and 22 Local Council Development Areas, a structural dominance that gives Oyebanji a formidable electoral machine. Some internal party tension lingers, however, following primaries in which several incumbent lawmakers lost their tickets. Joseph Anifowose of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has withdrawn and endorsed Oyebanji, citing the governor’s record on infrastructure and social services.

Ambassador Oluwadare Patrick Bejide, a former Secretary to the State Government and ex-Nigerian Ambassador to Canada, has positioned himself as the consensus alternative to both the APC and PDP. The ADC attracted several opposition heavyweights, including former Deputy Governor Kolapo Olusola-Eleka, former Commissioner for Information Akin Omole, and businessman Funsho Ayeni, giving it a credible profile at the top. Bejide emerged as the ADC candidate after defeating four other contestants—including former Deputy Governor Prof. Kolapo Olusola-Eleka—in the party’s primary election. Former Senate President David Mark, who now chairs the ADC, and former Osun Governor Rauf Aregbesola have both campaigned publicly for Bejide, leading the party’s grand finale campaign rally in Ado-Ekiti. ADC supporters have expressed confidence that Bejide can address pressing issues such as insecurity, kidnapping, unemployment, and the cost of university education. However, analysts say the ADC’s principal weakness is structural: it lacks the deep ward-level network that converts rally crowds into actual votes.

Dr Wole Oluyede, a medical practitioner and businessman from Ikere-Ekiti in Ekiti South Senatorial District, is flying the flag of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His candidacy carries a regional appeal: no governor has emerged from Ekiti South since the state’s creation, and his hometown remains one of the largest voting centres in the state. Oluyede has framed his campaign around the marginalisation of the southern senatorial district, arguing that it is the turn of the South to produce the next governor. He has also criticized the incumbent administration’s performance, stating, “If Governor Biodun Oyebanji had not performed poorly despite the huge monthly allocations to the state there won’t be need for me to contest against this administration.” His running mate, Deji Ogunsakin, is expected to shore up support in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital and highest-turnout zone. The PDP remains the state’s principal opposition platform but faces internal challenges. The most damaging blow to his campaign came not from the APC but from within: former Governor Ayodele Fayose, the PDP’s most powerful voice in Ekiti, publicly endorsed Oyebanji, a defection that political analysts say has significantly deflated the PDP’s prospects. Oluyede has attempted to distance himself from godfather politics, stating that the people of the state are his real godfather.

This election carries significant historical weight. The APC now controls the Presidency, the Ekiti State Government, and all 16 local government areas. APC spokesperson Segun Dipe summed up the party’s confidence, saying, “In 2026, alignment replaces confrontation; the script has flipped.” The election is seen as a critical test of electoral preparedness, institutional resilience, and citizens’ trust in the democratic process ahead of the 2027 General Elections. The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) has called on all stakeholders to uphold the principles of peace, transparency, inclusivity, and electoral integrity throughout the electoral process.
