#EndSARS: Buhari promises justice for Lekki victims, others

President Muhammadu Buhari has broken his silence on the shooting of #ENDSARS protesters in Lekki, Lagos by suspected soldiers, about a week after the incident.
The President said he would ensure justice for “peaceful protesters who lost their lives.”
He said, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant of Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, that he decided not to speak on the shooting incident until he had access to all the facts.
The President also said property owners and business owners affected by the arson across the nation would get justice.
The statement said, “As the judicial panel of inquiry set up by the Lagos State Government, one of the more dozen states to do so, starts sitting on Monday, President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his full support and optimism that it will assist the nation to give justice to peaceful protesters who lost their lives, security men who were murdered and property owners whose assets were vandalised and looted.
“The President, who said he had all along avoided going into a debate about the Lekki Toll Gate incidents until all the facts are established, appealed to the people all over the country to maintain peace and brotherhood as the machinery of the government and the wheel of justice turn against the perpetrators of murder, arson, stealing, rape, assault and malicious damage to public and private property.
“President Buhari reiterated his appeal for calm, brotherhood and communal harmony, telling Nigerians not to turn on each other in hate as according to him, peace, brotherhood, and inter-communal harmony are central to the nation’s ethos.
“He said it is important that the police and other security agencies move everywhere to restore calm and normalcy as quickly as possible.”
It also stated, “A government that has launched a massive crackdown on corruption, brought in strong laws for a decisive battle against corruption, pursues loot recovery at home and abroad, and taken strong decisions against those who thought they were above the law, will not fold its arms when an otherwise legitimate and peaceful protest is turning into free-for-all vandalism and looting.
“While the administration has, for its part, blocked so many means of looting public money in a war against corruption, it is the expectation that all civil authorities, community and religious leaders in the country must rise against the organised looting and plunder we are witnessing in parts of the country.”
The President urged families to reject items looted and brought home by their children.
He said, “Families must turn back children who bring home unaccounted goods, in the same way wives must ask their husbands to return looted items brought home.
“What is more, is that criminal actions as we have so far witnessed can weaken and erode the confidence of our people and that of foreign businesses in investing in the economy.
“Looting and vandalism will hurt trade and investment growth in our country, both large and small industries, as well as our hardworking people in the informal sectors of the economy.
“These incidents do not reflect well on any society. They are wrong and condemnable and should not be supported by reasonable members of the society.”

FG to procure customised screening machines for 5 Airports

FG to procure customised screening machines for 5 Airports
THE Federal Government is to procure customised explosives and narcotic detection screening system with remote and dual view for five international airports in the country to reduce the stress encountered by passengers.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Chief Festus Keyamo, said this at the end of the Federal Executive Council meeting on Monday in Abuja.
He said the contract was coming on the heels of the administration’s concern for the long delay and complaints by passengers using airports across the country.
Keyamo said the machines worth N3.28 billion would be installed in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt and Enugu Airports, adding that it had a completion period of 12 months from date of payment.
‘’Since I came to office, we have been inundated with the harrowing experience that passengers go through at the airports where they have to physically search their bags.
”You see various agencies lined up and they will be dipping their hands into your bags.

‘’We thought we should do something like you have the TSA in America where you have detection machines so when you pass your bags through their machines, they detect explosives and any other thing and that’s the end of the search,’’ he said.
Keyamo also said that the council ratified the Bilateral Air Service Agreement with the Republic of Guyana, which was signed in 2014.
He said that the agreement would bring about lesser air travel time for passengers going to European countries.
On the Nigeria Air project, the minister said that the project had been suspended and a report submitted to the president on the next line of action, adding that he would not want to preempt the decision of the president on it.
He, however, disclosed that various issues surrounding the deployment of the airline were appropriately tabled in the report to the president.
Keyamo said at the right time, Nigerians would be informed of the circumstances of the airline and when a new one would take off.
The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Lateef Fagbemi, said FEC approved the presentation of the Human Rights report of the country to the United Nations.
He said that the report was part of the UN Universal Periodic Report to be presented in February 2024.
‘’Since 2018 we have not made a report and there would be a meeting where all these reports will be submitted in February 2024. It’s just right that we forward the report ahead of that meeting.
‘’After engaging critical stakeholders in each of the six zones of the country, including all the three tiers of government, we compiled a report which we are sending to the United Nations Human Right on Universal Periodic Review for consideration,’’ he said.
Fagbemi said the report contained certain questions posed by the UN as part of the requirements for the submission of the report.
He said the report contained the status of Nigeria on child employment in armed forces, discrimination against women, especially in terms of inheritance as well as the fight against corruption.

” Because of the incident that happened yesterday, where a flight to Abuja ended up in Asaba. They must have their reports within ten days of what really transpired,” he said.
According to him, the transcript from the tower of Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) indicated that the pilot took off from Lagos headed to Asaba not Abuja.
” There was no weather problem yesterday, NiMet’s DG is here. It was a question of wet lease plane. Pilots and the Cabin crew were foreigners.
” They were not familiar with the Nigerian terrain. So, it was purely an issue of in-house administrative issues.
” We have agreed, from now, any wet lease coming into Nigeria must have a Nigerian pilot and Nigerians as its Cabin crew,” he said.
The minister directed the Director-General of Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority of Nigeria (NCAA) to hold a crucial briefing with all Pilots and Cabin crew of wet lease in Nigeria within 72 hours.
He said he had also ordered NCAA boss to see how law could be enforced whereby passengers get some benefits from the Airlines when there was flight delays or cancellations.
