BREAKING: Port Harcourt refinery begins operation

Nigeria’s owned

After many postponements, the Port Harcourt Refinery has eventually commenced partial production of crude oil.

Spokesperson for the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Olufemi Soneye, made this known on Tuesday.

The refinery which had been moribond for years is starting operation with 60 per cent refining capacity.

According to Soneye, the refinery is processing 60,000 barrels per day of crude.

The Port Harcourt refinery has a combined 250,000 barrels per day capacity.

Last week, the NNPC disclosed why the hitherto moribond but perennially-maintained and dollar-gulping Port Harcourt Refinery had not commenced operations.

The state-owned petroleum company had said the refinery would begin operation in September but the deadline did not materialise just like previous deadlines issued for the take-off of the refinery were not met.

The NNPC said it did not meet its last deadline and deliver the much-awaited refinery, which many observers and experts have touted as the panacea to Nigeria’s energy crisis, because of the challenges it encountered during the project.

There are exceptions that the refinery along with others, in Kaduna and Warri, will be fully privatised after their rehabilitation.

Man bags 12-year jail in Lagos for killing his wife
An Ikeja High Court has sentenced one Akinwale Akinlabi to 12 years imprisonment for k!lling his wife, Tope.
Tope d!ed on February 2, 2020, at Ijaiye Ojojoro area of Lagos due to sustained injury when she hit her head on the edge of a table after Akinlabi pushed her during a fight.
Akinlabi was charged with inflicting bodily injury on his wife which resulted in her d3ath.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge of manslaughter preferred against him by the Lagos State Government.
While delivering judgment on Monday, November 25, 2024, Justice Oyindamola Ogala, held that the prosecution sufficiently proved the charge of manslaughter against Akinlabi.
She held that the prosecution provided circumstantial evidence beyond every reasonable doubt, adding that the unlawful acts of the accused, harmed the deceased and caused her d3ath.
Ogala said it was clear from the evidence before the court that the fatality arose from the violence which occurred between the convict and his wife.

“Having heard and considered the plea of the defence counsel, and also taking into consideration the peculiarity of this case, the defendant is accordingly sentenced to a term of 12 years imprisonment.

Former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki

Ex-Edo Governor Obaseki on EFCC watch list, faces travel restrictions

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has placed former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki on its watch list.

The development comes as the anti-graft agency commences an investigation into various transactions, including contracts awarded during Obaseki’s tenure as governor.

According to sources within the commission, Obaseki’s administration is under scrutiny, with a team of investigators working to unravel some of the transactions and contracts awarded during his time in office. Although the bulk of these transactions have not been directly linked to Obaseki, the commission is following leads and hopes to uncover substantial evidence.

A source said, “An investigation has commenced on his administration. He can’t just be invited until the work has got to a certain stage. Some team of crack investigators have been assigned to the case and have been trying to unravel some of the transactions including contracts awarded under his administration.

“The bulk of the transactions, you can’t trace it to him. He made use of others. There have been leads which we have been following and we hope to get something substantial.”

According to another source within the commission, all former governors, including Godwin Obaseki, are being watchlisted by the commission.

“All former governors are always on the commission’s watch list whether the commission has something with the fellow or not. We are not going to allow them to jet out of the country and then start going after them when we need them. So that is why we always place all of them on our watch list,” the source said.

Obaseki, who stepped down as governor on November 12 after an eight-year tenure, had previously stated that the EFCC planned to arrest him soon after leaving office. However, he expressed his willingness to cooperate with the anti-graft agency and provide an account of his tenure.

Meanwhile, Obaseki’s successor, Governor Monday Okpebholo, on Sunday established a 14-member State Assets Verification Committee to investigate Obaseki’s tenure.
