JUST IN: After flood wreaked havoc in Lagos, state govt says more buildings will go

The Lagos State Government say it will demolish more structures preventing free flow of water after every heavy rain.

This came after the state witnessed dangerous flooding on Wednesday.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, announced on Wednesday that numerous structures obstructing the free flow of rainwater will be removed, regardless of the status or position of their owners.

Wahab made this declaration following severe flooding that submerged numerous houses, communities, and properties in Lagos. The affected areas include Epe, Eredo, Bogije, Labora, Abijon, Sangotedo, Awoyaya, and Ibeju-Lekki.

Tragically, a primary six pupil named Joshua was swept away by floodwaters in the Ikosi, Ketu area of Lagos State.

Some area boys took advantage of the crisis, charging passers-by N100 to use a makeshift bridge at the Tradefair under-bridge in Lagos.

In response to a provocative post on X (formerly Twitter), Wahab addressed allegations that recent demolitions of properties owned by the Igbo community in Lagos were politically motivated. The post by @PureStanley1 suggested that the demolitions, justified by claims that the buildings blocked canals and caused flooding, were targeted against Igbo-owned properties.

@PureStanley1 wrote: “Can we all now agree that the Igbo-owned property and business demolitions we witnessed in Lagos 2023 were all politically engineered? We were told that some buildings were built on canals, blocking water flow and causing flooding in Lagos. @tokunbo_wahab, can you explain why there was flooding in Lagos again yesterday and today, after demolishing Igbo-owned properties? Take the microphone, sir. We await your response!”

Wahab responded firmly, accusing the user of pushing an ethnic narrative. He reiterated that the removal of structures obstructing water flow would continue irrespective of the owners’ status.

“Many more structures obstructing the free flow of rainwater in Lagos will still be removed, irrespective of who or how highly placed the owners are. Prepare your mind to make your usual aimless and empty noise. If turning it into an ethnic narrative makes you happy, go ahead! TW,” he posted.

Police warn about planned secret cult initiations in schools, others

The Police Command in Rivers has cautioned the public regarding potential cult-related activities across the country on June 7.

SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson of the command, disclosed in a statement in Port Harcourt on Saturday that a large number of Black Axe cultists were preparing to mark their Founder’s Day.

According to her, intelligence reports indicate that the confraternity intends to initiate innocent victims into their group and potentially engage in clashes with rival cults on the same day.

“We have received information about the Neo-Black Movement (NBM), also known as Aiye or Black Axe, which plans to hold a nationwide commemoration in honour of their Founder’s Day.

“The event, code-named Aiye Day or 7/7, is scheduled to be observed in all states of the federation, especially in institutions of higher learning.

“The command is aware of the antecedents of the confraternity, notorious for killings on campuses, inter-cult clashes, and other criminal activities of a violent nature.’’

Iringe-Koko said that intelligence reports suggested the group was plotting to disrupt public peace from their strongholds and on tertiary campuses across the country.

“The ceremony could possibly lead to counter-cult activities, inter-cult violence and other associated violent crimes in and around tertiary institutions in Rivers.

“It might provide ample opportunity for the forced initiation of innocent victims, as well as crimes such as rape and armed robbery.

“Consequently, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers, Olatunji Disu, has directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and tactical team commanders to conduct pre-emptive and responsive raids.’’

The police image maker emphasised that the pre-emptive measures would target cult hideouts, high-risk areas and hotels that could serve as meeting points for cult leaders.

She mentioned that police operatives had been instructed to prevent the planned event, arrest suspected cultists and bring them to justice.

“Police area commanders, DPOs and tactical team commanders are to emplace visible and effective patrol strategies, closely monitoring all tertiary institution campuses and public places to intercept cult members.

“Parents and guardians should keep a close eye on their children and wards during this period and watch for warning signs in their interactions with friends.

“Similarly, community leaders and security outfits are encouraged to report any unusual gatherings in their area, while religious leaders should preach to their congregants on the evil of secret cults,” Iringe-Koko appealed.

Ghanaian, friend stab each other to death in Osun

Two persons believed to be friends have stabbed each other to death in Inisa, Osun State.

The deceased are Alli Baba, a Ghanaian, said to be a palm wine tapper, and his friend, Kayode Olete.

The remains of the two persons were found on Friday in a dilapidated building after they reportedly stabbed themselves to death during a bloody fight.

According to Punch, loud noises were heard by residents close to the building where their bodies were recovered which suggested that the two had a bloody fight.

A resident of Inisa who gave his name as Jamiu, told newsmen that dangerous weapons were likely used in the fight between the two friends, as their intestines were exposed when security agents recovered their bodies on Friday.

Jamiu disclosed, “My house is in the same Baale Okunoye compound where Alli Baba was living. We all heard a loud noise from the house around 9:00 pm on Thursday when the two of them were fighting each other.

“We could not even come to the scene when we heard the noise, because it was late in the evening. When security men came around this morning, they met the two of them dead. They stabbed each other to death, but I can’t say the cause of the fight.”

“The two of them were said to be close friends. Nobody knows what led to their fight as the house where the incident happened is isolated and dilapidated. Passersby later saw them in a pool of blood as they had stabbed and macheted themselves with their intestines popping out.

“Our officers immediately contacted the chairman of the LCDA and the elders of the community. When we got to the scene this morning, it was discovered that the two of them had passed on. The families of the two victims were contacted and they gave their consent for them to be buried.”

Meanwhile, a commercial driver plying the Edo/Osun State route, Olalekan Amos, has been arrested by the police for fleeing with electronic gadgets worth N4.5 million he was meant to deliver in Osogbo.
