JUST IN: Kamala Harris formally declared US Democratic presidential candidate
US Vice President Kamala Harris secured the Democratic party’s presidential nomination on Friday, marking a historic rise to become the party’s candidate for the November showdown against Republican Donald Trump.
Harris, 59, was the sole candidate in a five-day electronic vote by nearly 4,000 party convention delegates. As the first Black and South Asian woman to secure a major party’s nomination, she will be officially confirmed at a Chicago convention later this month.
“I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for president of the United States,” Harris said during a phone-in to a party celebration after securing enough votes by the second day of the virtual vote.
In the two weeks since Joe Biden ended his reelection bid, Harris has taken full control of the party, breaking fundraising records, filling arenas, and closing the polling gap that Trump had over Biden.
“I couldn’t be prouder,” Biden posted on X following her nomination.

With her nomination confirmed, Harris is set to campaign across seven crucial states next week alongside her yet-to-be-named running mate.
The Democratic Party opted for a virtual nomination process, similar to the one used in the pandemic-hit 2020 election, due to an early deadline in Ohio for submitting certified candidate names.
The virtual roll call marks the official start of the 2024 convention, with traditional festivities beginning when thousands of party members gather in Chicago on August 19.
The event will feature a ceremonial vote for Harris, celebrating her rise from California prosecutor to historic presidential candidate.
Trump’s campaign was upended on July 21 when 81-year-old Biden, facing concerns about his age and declining poll numbers, withdrew his candidacy and endorsed Harris.

Woman gruesomely murdered after rejecting amorous request from her crush

Woman gruesomely murdered after rejecting amorous request from her crush
A young woman has met a horrific end after she told a US Army reserve who had a crush on her that she only wanted to be friends.
Prosecutors have said Jose Luis Lopez Xique, 27, shot Kayli Grace Arseth, 22, in a bloody attack at her Minnesota home on June 16 after they met online.
Hennepin County Attorney’s Office filed one count of second-degree intentional murd£r against Lopez Xique on Monday, July 7.
The office said messages between the suspect and victim showed that Lopez Xique was “asking for a romantic relationship” despite “Arseth making clear that she was only interested in friendship.”
During the investigation, police uncovered a grisly bag of discarded items at the crime scene in Arseth’s home located in Richfield, southern Minneapolis. It included ammunition, an empty box of gauze, disposable gloves, a pair of shoes, a hat, wipes, masking tape, and rubber gloves.
An attorney for Lopez Xique said he is enlisted in the US Army Reserve, and is a US citizen who has lived in Shakopee, on the outskirts of Minnesota, most of his life.

Court documents detail Arseth’s final movements.
She finished work at Fraser School, a pre-school where she worked as a behavioral technician for autistic children, just after 4.20pm.
When she returned to her apartment nearby on Penn Avenue, she was horrified to find Lopez Xique lying in wait. He had broken in, according to court documents.
A neighbor told police he heard Arseth scream “how could you do this to me?” as the two argued.
The next day, police discovered Arseth’s body in the apartment amid a “gruesome scene”. She had suffered a gunshot wound to the head.
Richfield Police said Arseth met the alleged k!ller online, and that he would purchase goods for her on shopping trips, but they did not have a romantic or sexual relationship.
The department said Snapchat messages showed Arseth messaged Lopez Xique while she was at work asking him for help with her motorcycle on the day she died.
But later that afternoon, she added: “I don’t have enough mental capacity for any type of relationship right now.”
Lopez Xique replied telling her to “have fun” that evening.
Arseth was a graduate of Wayzata High School, where she was on the swim team and track and field team.
Her family said she was hoping to study developmental psychology at the University of Minnesota.
“Kayli made a positive difference in many people’s lives and will be deeply missed,” her obituary reads.
“She always told people, ‘well, you’re stuck with me.’ The irony is that she is now stuck in our hearts forever.”
“This was a terrible instance of extreme, targeted violence that took Kayli from her loved ones,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said.
“My thoughts are with her family during this extraordinarily difficult period. Our office will prosecute Mr. Lopez Xique to protect our community and hold him accountable for his actions.”

U.S. offers free flight, $1,000 stipend to undocumented migrants who voluntarily leave

U.S. offers free flight, $1,000 stipend to undocumented migrants who voluntarily leave
The United States government has introduced an incentive-based program aimed at encouraging undocumented migrants to leave the country voluntarily, offering a complimentary flight home and a $1,000 stipend upon departure.
Harry Fones, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, unveiled details of the initiative at a press briefing on Thursday.
Fones highlighted recent updates to the CBP One mobile application, which now enables undocumented individuals to arrange their voluntary departure from the U.S.
“What this does is that if you are here in the United States illegally, you can download the CBP home app, you can register on it,” he said.“And the United States Government will provide you with a free flight home. You will also receive a 1,000 dollars stipend that is paid once it’s confirmed that you have departed the United States.”
He noted that the app allows users to register not only themselves but also their children and other family members, all of whom are eligible for the same benefits.
“So if it’s a family of, let’s say, four, that family would receive a stipend of $4,000,” he said.“There’s the financial benefit, but there is the benefit that this could help preserve a way for you to come back into the United States in the future.Whereas if you are deported, you will not be able to return to this country,” he added.

Fones emphasized the administration’s commitment to enforcing immigration laws, while positioning the app as a helpful alternative for those wishing to leave voluntarily.
“We are enforcing the laws of this country. Deportation is a priority of this administration.”
He explained that the application has been redesigned to be more accessible and user-friendly.
“What we have done under the Trump Administration is turn this into an app to help people who are here illegally to return home.”
The program, launched in May, has already seen numerous participants take advantage of the travel assistance and departure options, according to Fones.
He also announced that penalties for those who failed to comply with previous voluntary departure orders are being waived.
“But one of the other things that was announced with it is that we are now forgiving failure to depart fines. So these are fines for people who have a voluntary departure order that they haven’t honoured.”
He added that such fines could reach up to $10,000, and individuals who ignore final removal orders may face daily penalties nearing $998.
The Department of Homeland Security is working in tandem with the Department of Justice to simplify enforcement and fine administration processes.
“We’re streamlining the process through a federal rule.”
Fones described the CBP One app as a practical route for undocumented migrants to avoid deportation proceedings.
“So if you use this app, it does deprioritise you from ICE’s (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) deportation list. And it can also help possibly preserve your ability to come back into the United States legally later. If you don’t use this app and you don’t depart the U.S., we are enforcing this nation’s laws when it comes to immigration now, and it could result in a deportation.”
He concluded by noting continued improvements to the app and the expansion of its benefits.
“We’re improving on the app to make it easier for people to use, adding that it has continued to expand the benefits for people using it.”

40 Palestinians killed in Gaza as Netanyahu, Trump meet

40 Palestinians killed in Gaza as Netanyahu, Trump meet
DEIR AL-BALAH: At least 40 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, hospital officials said Wednesday, as international mediators raced to complete a ceasefire deal.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had a second meeting in two days with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday evening. Trump has been pushing for a ceasefire that might lead to an end to the 21-month war in Gaza. Israel and Hamas are considering a new US-backed ceasefire proposal that would pause the war, free Israeli hostages and send much-needed aid into Gaza.
Nasser Hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis said the dead included included 17 women and 10 children. It said one strike killed 10 people from the same family, including three children.
The Israeli military did not comment on specific strikes, but said it had struck more than 100 targets across Gaza over the past day, including militants, booby-trapped structures, weapons storage facilities, missile launchers and tunnels. Israel accuses Hamas of hiding weapons and fighters among civilians.
Struggle to secure food and water
Many Palestinians are watching the ceasefire negotiations with trepidation, desperate for an end to the war.
In the sprawling coastal Muwasi area, where many live in ad-hoc tents after being displaced from their homes, Abeer Al-Najjar said she had struggled during the constant bombardments to secure sufficient food and water for her family. “I pray to God that there would be a pause, and not just a pause where they would lie to us with a month or two, then start doing what they’re doing to us again. We want a full ceasefire.”

Her husband, Ali Al-Najjar, said life has been especially tough in the summer, with no access to drinking water in a crowded tent in the Middle Eastern heat. “We hope this would be the end of our suffering and we can rebuild our country again,” he said, before running through a crowd with two buckets to fill them from a water truck.
People chased the vehicle as it drove away to another location.
Amani Abu-Omar said the water truck comes every four days, not enough for her dehydrated children. She complained of skin rashes in the summer heat. She said she was desperate for a ceasefire but fears she would be let down again. “We had expected ceasefires on many occasions, but it was for nothing,” she said.
The war started after Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 hostage. Most of the hostages have been released in earlier ceasefires. Israel’s offensive in Gaza has killed more than 57,000 Palestinians, more than half of them women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
The UN and other international organizations see its figures as the most reliable statistics on war casualties.
Netanyahu and Trump meet again
Netanyahu told reporters in the Capitol on Tuesday that he and Trump see “eye to eye” on the need to destroy Hamas. He added that the cooperation and coordination between Israel and the US is currently the best it has ever been during Israel’s 77-year-history.
Later this week, Trump’s Mideast envoy, Steve Witkoff, is expected to head to the Qatari capital of Doha to continue indirect negotiations with Hamas on the ceasefire proposal.
Witkoff said late Tuesday that three key areas of disagreement had been resolved, but that one key issue still remained. He did not elaborate.
After the second meeting, Netanyahu said he and Trump also discussed the “great victory” over Iran from Israeli and American strikes during the 12-day war that ended two weeks ago.
“Opportunities have been opened here for expanding the circle of peace, for expanding the Abraham Accords,” said Netanyahu, referring to normalization agreements between Israel and multiple Arab nations that were brokered by Trump in his first term. Washington has been pushing for normalization between Saudi Arabia and Israel.
