Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has hosted Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen and his Galatasaray teammates following the club’s latest Süper Lig victory.

This came even as top European clubs including Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Chelsea, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich circle for the Nigerian superstar.

The reception, held at the prestigious Presidential Complex in Ankara, celebrated Galatasaray’s continued dominance in Turkish football after securing their 26th league title—a feat that further cemented the club’s place as the most successful in Turkish football history.

Galatasaray extended their impressive run this season, finishing three points ahead of fierce rivals Fenerbahçe to clinch the championship.

The victory marked the club’s fourth consecutive Süper Lig crown, underscoring their complete control over domestic football in recent years.

If Galatasaray wins the Süper Lig title again next season, they will become the first club in Turkish football history to win five straight league championships—an unprecedented achievement that would separate them from every other team in the nation’s history.

The Nigerian forward played a decisive role in Galatasaray’s successful campaign, delivering impressive numbers despite spending some time on the sidelines due to injury.

Osimhen registered 15 league goals and five assists in just 22 Süper Lig appearances, proving his worth as the team’s most lethal attacking weapon.

The 27-year-old striker also made his mark on the European stage, contributing seven goals and three assists in 10 UEFA Champions League matches before Galatasaray’s elimination by Liverpool in the round of 16.

According to statistical analysis, Osimhen’s goal involvement this season stands at approximately one goal contribution per 90 minutes, with an expected assists (xA) output placing him above 87 percent of players in the Süper Lig.

His passing accuracy has been recorded at 74.35%, and he averages 1.38 key passes per game, creating significant scoring chances for his teammates.

Following their Süper Lig victory, the entire Galatasaray squad was honored with a reception by President Erdoğan. Osimhen and his teammates, all dressed sharply in black suits, were welcomed to the Presidential Complex in Ankara, where they exchanged handshakes with the Turkish leader in a ceremony that highlighted the significance of the team’s achievement. 

Galatasaray President Dursun Özbek presented an official club jersey to President Erdoğan during the ceremony, a traditional gesture that symbolizes the bond between the club and the nation’s highest office.

During the event, Osimhen personally addressed the Turkish leader, expressing his gratitude for the invitation and speaking warmly about the reception. The Nigerian forward acknowledged the honour of being hosted at the presidential level, a rare privilege reserved for championship-winning teams.

Osimhen has enjoyed a highly productive and successful spell with the Turkish giants, winning three titles since his arrival at the club.

He joined Galatasaray on a permanent basis last summer following an initial loan spell from Napoli, signing a four-year contract that ties him to the club through to 30 June 2029.

The move came after a somewhat underwhelming final season in Italy, where his relationship with Napoli management had become strained.

Despite his contractual commitment to Galatasaray, Osimhen has continued to speak warmly about life in Istanbul and has not publicly pushed for a move. “Everything here is on another level.

Aston Villa Win Europa League to End 30-Year Trophy Drought 

ISTANBUL — Aston Villa have won the Europa League, defeating Freiburg 3-0 in Istanbul courtesy of two stunning goals from Youri Tielemans and Emiliano Buendia, and an effort from Morgan Rogers, to capture their first trophy since the League Cup in 1996.

The emphatic victory at Besiktas Park also marks Villa’s first continental trophy since they lifted the European Cup in 1982, etching manager Unai Emery and his team into the club’s folklore. In front of nine of the 1982 European Cup heroes — including captain Dennis Mortimer and goalscorer Peter Withe — Villa wrote themselves another momentous chapter, fittingly playing in white shirts against a German team in red, just as their predecessors did against Bayern Munich 44 years ago.

The match remained cagey for much of the first half, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut opportunities. Freiburg, appearing in the first European final in their history, matched Villa’s early intensity. Any hopes of a Freiburg comeback were extinguished in the 58th minute. Buendia turned provider, advancing down the left before delivering a low, fast cross into the box. Morgan Rogers arrived at the near post and slid to convert first-time, making it 3-0 and sending the thousands of Villa supporters inside the Besiktas Stadium into rapturous celebration. According to UEFA regulations, the Europa League winner qualifies directly for the Champions League the following season. If that team also finishes fifth in the Premier League, their Champions League spot based on league position is transferred to the team that finishes sixth.

Villa currently sit fourth in the Premier League table with 62 points after 37 rounds, three points ahead of fifth-placed Liverpool. In the final round of matches on May 24, Villa visit runners-up Manchester City while Liverpool host Brentford at Anfield. If Villa lose to Manchester City and Liverpool win against Brentford, both teams would finish on 62 points with Liverpool likely ranked higher due to superior goal difference. In that scenario, Villa would drop to fifth place. As Europa League champions, they would still qualify for the Champions League, and the fifth-place berth would be transferred to the team finishing sixth — currently Bournemouth, who are level on points with Brighton but ahead on goal difference. Villa fans still in Istanbul received bittersweet news after the match: the trophy parade will be held in Birmingham on Thursday, meaning many supporters who travelled to Turkey will miss the homecoming celebrations due to travel logistics. The parade will begin on Branston Street in the Jewellery Quarter at 16:30 BST on Thursday, travelling through Sand Pits, Broad Street, and Centenary Square. The parade will have three open-top buses, with the lead bus dressed in blue carrying media, followed by a claret bus with the players. A third blue bus carrying staff will complete the convoy. A trophy lift will take place as the centrepiece of the parade.

The club explored the possibility of recreating the iconic 1982 European Cup celebrations by taking the players to Victoria Square, as well as erecting a stage in Centenary Square. However, due to ongoing works and safety concerns at Victoria Square, and advice from authorities around the risk of overcrowding at Centenary Square, both proposals were ruled out. The club apologised to fans still in Istanbul who would not be able to join in the celebrations. For those unable to attend in person, the parade will be broadcast live on VillaTV, as well as on YouTube and across the club’s social media channels. Aston Villa are covering all costs associated with the event. Several roads in Birmingham city centre will be closed from 10:00 until 22:00 BST, including Branston Street, Broad Street, Centenary Square, and surrounding areas.

The Europa League triumph secures Villa’s place in next season’s Champions League group stage — a competition in which Emery has already demonstrated his capabilities with a run to the quarter-finals in 2024-25, only halted by eventual champions Paris Saint-Germain. Arsenal have been crowned Premier League champions for the first time in 22 years after Manchester City were held to a dramatic draw by Bournemouth on Tuesday night.

Pep Guardiola’s side needed a victory to cut Arsenal’s lead to two points and keep the title race alive until the final day of the season. But Bournemouth stunned the defending champions when Junior Kroupi fired the hosts ahead in the 39th minute.

Although Erling Haaland rescued a late equaliser deep into stoppage time, City failed to find the winning goal required to delay Arsenal’s coronation.

The result officially hands Mikel Arteta’s men their first league title since the famous 2003/2004 “Invincibles” campaign under Arsène Wenger.

Arsenal, who have finished runners-up in each of the past three seasons, will now head into Sunday’s final league match against Crystal Palace in celebratory mood as they seal a remarkable campaign.

The North London club has now won a 14th English top-flight title, trailing only Liverpool and Manchester United, who have 20 each.

Arteta’s side could yet crown the season with a historic double, having also booked a place in the UEFA Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain on May 30, where they will chase a first-ever European crown.
