Obaseki’s Cousin Heads to Court Over Alleged Assault, Abduction in Benin City

Obaseki’s Cousin Heads to Court Over Alleged Assault, Abduction in Benin City

Dr. Pedro Agbonifo Obaseki, a cousin of former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, has announced plans to approach the court over an alleged assault and abduction he suffered in Benin City, Edo State.

According to Dr. Obaseki, the incident occurred in late December when he was allegedly forcefully abducted, assaulted and publicly humiliated by a group of men. He described the act as a gross violation of his fundamental human rights, adding that the matter has gone beyond public outrage and must now be tested in court.

The medical doctor said he has briefed his lawyers to institute both civil and criminal actions against those involved, stressing that the move is aimed at ensuring justice, accountability and deterrence. He also warned that acts of mob justice and unlawful violence must not be allowed to thrive in a democratic society.

The case has attracted widespread attention following the circulation of videos on social media showing the alleged assault. While the attackers reportedly claimed to be acting on instructions from traditional authorities, the Benin Traditional Council has denied any involvement in the incident.

Political reactions have also followed the development, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other groups condemning the attack and calling on security agencies to arrest and prosecute those responsible. Former Governor Godwin Obaseki has equally condemned the incident, urging law enforcement agencies to ensure a thorough investigation.

The decision to seek legal redress comes amid growing concerns over human rights abuses, vigilante actions and political violence in parts of Edo State, with rights groups calling for stronger enforcement of the rule of law.
