Police Harass Woman on Her Hospital Bed ‘On DIG Johnson Kokumo’s Orders’ Over Land Dispute

Adeyinka Igbinoba, a businesswoman residing in Lagos, has narrated the harassment she has continued to suffer in the hands of some officers of Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT), who on the orders of Johnson Kokumo, a deputy inspector general of police, have continued to monitor her despite being in a hospital bed.

Igbinoba told FIJ that the reason the officers have been harassing her is because of a N30 million land purchase dispute she has with Saheed Mosadoluwa, a Lagos property agent who owns Harmony Garden and Estate Development Limited.

Igbinoba also said that the security operatives have been ‘pressing her’ to write a new statement that is capable of changing the outcome of a case that is still in court on the matter.

“At the moment, the matter in contention is already in court. Saheed Mosadoluwa, the man who assaulted me and put me on crutches 11 months ago, together with Sade Gbadamosi, the owner of Amen Estate, have been trying so hard to make sure that this matter doesn’t get to court. That’s why it took 11 months for the matter getting to court,” Igbinoba told FIJ on Monday.

“I went to court on crutches. Then the police approached me in my current state and said that they wanted to investigate the matter again. I told them that the matter was already in court, but they said that the man was accusing me of defamation of character and that I went to the press. But I went to the press to state facts.

“I went to the press to let the public know how this man assaulted me and what he had been doing to pervert the course of justice. All the journalists that wrote that story also called him to give his own side of the story, which he did.

“I explained to them that I couldn’t follow them to Abuja on a case that had already been investigated with me as a principal witness. They kept calling and calling.

“I still have issues with my leg and I needed medical attention so I was taken to the hospital. They asked us where we were so we told them the name of the hospital.

“So, they came to the hospital and started to harass me, saying that I must drop a statement that I went to the press to defame Saheed Mosadoluwa.”

Igbinoba said that the officers sent to monitor her at the hospital claimed to be acting on the orders of DIG Johnson Kokumo.

A previous news report detailed how Mosadoluwa brutally attacked Igbinoba at his office in Victoria Island on November 20, 2021, after she asked for a refund of a N30 million payment she made as deposit for a piece of land.

The IG Monitoring Unit of the Nigeria Police Force had investigated the case and forwarded its findings to Lagos State Ministry of Justice in early 2022. A

fter this, a lawsuit was then filed by Lagos Ministry of Justice at the Magistrate Court in Yaba.

During the first hearing of the case, Mosadoluwa denied harming Igbinoba. He also went to say Igbinoba had accused him of being rude and abused him during the November 2021 incident.

“I told her to leave my office. I even saw her rushing out; she probably fell on the stairs. I don’t know and there was nothing wrong with her until she left my office,” Mosadoluwa said.

But Igbinoba insisted that Mosadoluwa broke her ankle and assaulted her brother-in-law at his office.

FIJ later obtained pictures and videos of Igbinoba’s smashed ankle as she was about to undergo an urgent surgery on November 21, 2021.

“As we speak, the same way he is chasing me, he is chasing all the other journalists who wrote the story as well,” Igbinoba said.

FIJ made several phone calls to Muyiwa Adejobi, Police spokesman, for comments on the allegation made against DIG Kokumo, but he ended the call. He had also not responded to the text message sent to him at press time.

Lagos govt insists nightclubs, worship centres must obtain permit for amplified sound

The Lagos State Government has rolled out stricter measures to combat noise pollution, requiring nightclubs, lounges, bars, and worship centres to obtain permits for events involving amplified sound.

The measure, it said, aimed to safeguard the health and well-being of Lagosians during the festive season and beyond.

Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced this via his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, emphasizing the government’s zero-tolerance stance on noise pollution.

Wahab highlighted that events with amplified sound must be conducted in soundproofed, enclosed spaces to protect residents from the harmful effects of excessive noise.

“Establishments such as worship centers, nightclubs, lounges, and bars must now obtain permits for events involving amplified sound and ensure these activities take place in soundproofed, enclosed spaces to protect neighboring residents,” the statement read in part.

To enforce these directives, the government said it had established a Special Task Force on Noise Pollution under the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA).

This task force, in collaboration with the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps (LSNSC) and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), would oversee compliance, arrest offenders, and prosecute violators of noise regulations, it stated.

The statement further noted that starting January 2025, the government would roll out a public awareness campaign to educate Lagosians on acceptable noise levels and the benefits of a quieter environment.

Oluwo backs push for Sharia law in South-West

Oluwo backs push for Sharia law in South-West

The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, has expressed support for the proposed implementation of Sharia law in the South-West, emphasizing its historical presence in Yoruba culture.

Oba Akanbi noted that Sharia principles have long been part of Yoruba land, citing examples such as Sharia banking and the existence of a Sharia college in Iwo, Osun State.

He stated, “Sharia law has been in Iwo for over 100 years… It’s the right of Muslims to choose customary law or the high court.”

Recall that the discussion around Sharia law gained traction after plans were announced for the inauguration of a Sharia council on January 11, 2025, at the Muslim Community Islamic Centre in Oyo. However, the event has been postponed indefinitely following widespread public criticism.

Critics have argued that the Yoruba-dominated South-West, where Muslims and Christians coexist, is distinct from the predominantly Muslim northern region where Sharia is more widely practiced.

Addressing concerns, Oba Akanbi explained that Sharia law is already embedded in Nigeria’s constitution and should not cause alarm for non-Muslims.

“Sharia law is only for Muslims and does not concern others. If any other person likes it, they can convert to Islam, and Muslims can also convert to Christianity. Everyone is free,” he said.

The monarch also drew attention to the challenges faced by Muslims under existing laws, particularly in matters such as inheritance and divorce, where Western legal frameworks may not align with Islamic traditions. “Many Muslims feel disenfranchised… Western education doesn’t understand the ways of Muslim divorce, marriage, and inheritance,” he added.

Oba Akanbi emphasized that Sharia law represents the inalienable rights of Muslims and should not be viewed as a threat to other religions. “No government can deny Muslims their inalienable rights,” he concluded.
