Tragedy as smugglers kill Customs officer in Kaduna

The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit, Zone B on Saturday, announced the killing of one of its officers identified as Inspector of Customs, Hamza Abdullahi-Elenwo.

The incident, according to the Zone B Public Relations Officer, Isa Suleiman in a statement in Kaduna, occurred on Friday, at Achilafia along Daura-Kano road, Jigawa State during a stop and search operation.

Suleiman explained that the incident happened when the vehicle suspected to be smuggled into the country hit the operative while trying to evade arrest.

He added that the slain officer was rushed to General Hospital Kazaure and later transferred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Katsina, where he was pronounced dead by the doctor on duty.

The Customs spokesperson added that the deceased has been laid to rest in accordance to Islam rites.

Suleiman said, “The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit, Zone B is sad to announce the tragic demise of Inspector of Customs (IC) Hamza Abdullahi Elenwo in an unfortunate incident that occurred on Friday, 12 July 2024 at Achilafia along Daura-Kano Road in Jigawa State during a stop and search operation.

“The incident occurred when a vehicle suspected to be smuggled into the country hit the operative while trying to evade arrest. The late Operative was rushed to the General Hospital Kazaure and later transferred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Katsina, where he was pronounced dead by the Doctor on duty. The deceased has been laid to rest in Katsina, according to Islamic rites.”

He quoted the Head of Federal Operations Unit Zone B, Comptroller Ahmadu Shuaibu, to have on behalf of the entire Officers and Men of the Unit, extended  his heartfelt condolence to the deceased’s family and prayed for his eternal rest.

“Comptroller Shuaibu asserted that the incident shows the level of desperation by smugglers operating without recourse to human lives, adding that it is also one of the many instances where smugglers kill and maim Personnel of the service in an attempt to evade arrest.

“The Comptroller vowed to ensure justice is served as One (1) Suspect has been arrested and is in the Custody of the Nigeria Police Force, Gwiwa Division in Jigawa State,” he said.

Man accused of strangulating girlfriend to death in A-Ibom

OPERATIVES of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested one Ndifreke Nelson for allegedly strangling her girlfriend, identified as Emem Effanga, to death in her apartment over phone.

The Police Public Relations officer, Timfon John, in a statement, yesterday, said the suspect was arrested in a church in Uyo, where he attempted to escape to upon sighting police operatives.

Her words: “Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested one Ndifreke Nelson for alleged murder of his girlfriend, Emem Effanga (39) and stealing her mobile phone after committing the crime.
“Sometime in February 2025, the command received a report that the deceased was found dead in her apartment under suspicious circumstances.

“Upon arrival at the scene, operatives observed visible marks of violence on her face and neck, suggesting she had been strangled and beaten to death.

“The scene was processed, evidence documented and the body was evacuated to the hospital, where she was confirmed clinically dead by medical personnel. The corpse was, thereafter, deposited at the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

“Following swift investigations, detectives traced the last person seen with the deceased to be Ndifreke Nelson, who had visited her residence on February 6, 2025, the morning of his birthday.”

The PPRO added that during interrogation, the suspect confessed to visiting the victim that morning and demanding to use her phone to take pictures for his birthday celebration on social media, and when she refused, a struggle ensued, during which he overpowered her, strangled her and struck her head on the floor with his fist, leaving her unconscious before fleeing with her phone.

“One Itel Super Phone, belonging to the deceased, was recovered from him at the time of arrest. A post-mortem examination has been conducted, and the cause of death has been officially documented by a pathologist. The suspect will be charged to court.”

“The Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, has assured that justice will be served and warned against all forms of domestic violence and criminal acts. He urges the public to remain security conscious and report suspicious activities to the Police,” John further stated.

Suspected kidnapper arrested after collecting ransom in Delta

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a suspected kidnapper after he collected ransom before releasing his female victim.

Spokesperson of the command, SP Bright Edafe, who disclosed this in a statement on Monday, March 17, 2025, said the suspect identified as Abdulahi Isah, was arrested in a bush five days after he abducted the woman in Ibusa community, Oshimili North Local Government Area of the state.

“On 12/3/2025, at about 1100hours, an indigene of Ibusa (name withheld) reported at Ibusa Police station that his friend’s wife was kidnapped on 7/3/2025 and a ransom was paid and that he was the person who delivered the ransom and other food items to the kidnappers,” the statement read.

” Acting on useful information provided by the said man the DPO Ibusa Police Station swiftly mobilized the patrol team of Ibusa division alongside vigilantes and stormed the bush where the suspect Abdulahi Isah was arrested.

Lagos to prosecute woman over improper waste disposal

The Lagos State Government has stated that it will prosecute a woman known as Nwakwo Patience for allegedly dumping rubbish at an undesignated location.

Tokunbo Wahab, the state commissioner for environment and water resources, announced on Monday that the suspect was apprehended on March 13, 2025, at around 7:47 a.m. in the Alimosho area of Lagos.

The commissioner stated that the individual “identified as Nwakwo Patient was observed illegally dumping refuse at Alimosho Bus Stop along New Ipaja Road.”

“Further investigations at her residence confirmed the absence of a designated waste storage facility. While the suspect claimed to be registered with the Private Sector Participant operator servicing the area, she was unable to provide any supporting evidence of such registration or payment for waste collection services,” Wahab said in a statement on X.

He also disclosed that the suspect would be prosecuted in accordance with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017 to ensure compliance with waste management regulations.
