ASUU mum as FG drags union to industrial court
The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has refused to comment on the decision of the Federal Government to drag the union to the National Industrial Court(NIC).
President of ASUU, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, refused to pick calls or reply to messages sent to his phone on Sunday.
Parties involved in the suit are expected to appear before the NiC on Monday, September 12, 2022.
In a letter addressed to the NiC by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, the government appealed to the court to give the dispute an accelerated hearing in order to bring it to an end.
The letter was confirmed by Ngige on Sunday to The Nation
“We have referred (the dispute to the NiC) and all parties FGN/ FMEd/HAGF/ASUU have been served for appearance and hearing at NiCN for 9am tomorrow Monday,” Ngige said in a short message.
The letter by the Minister which was obtained by The Nation reads: ” Please find attached three (3) original copies of a Referral Instrument regarding the trade dispute between the Federal Government of Nigeria /Federal Ministry of Education and The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for adjudication by the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN).

“In view of the fact that ASUU members have been on strike since February 14, 2022, and have refused to call off the action despite apprehension of the same , it would be appreciated if this dispute is given an accelerated hearing in order to bring the dispute to an end.
“The addresses of the parties in dispute are as follows: 1. President. Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) c/o ASUU Secretariat University of Abuja, etc. Honorable Minister of Education, Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Secretariat Phase II. Shehu Shagari Way, Abuja 1. Honorable Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation. Shehu Shagari Way. Abuja. iv. The Honorable Minister, Federal Ministry of Labor and Employment, Shehu Shagari Way, Abuja.
“Please be assured of my very warm regards.”
On February 14, ASUU declared a one month warning strike that soon escalated into a full blown strike.
Some of the demands of the union included: funding for revitalisation of public universities; payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA)/Earned Allowances (EA); payment of salary shortfalls; stop the proliferation of state universities by governors; setting up of Visitation Panels.
Others are: renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement; adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) as a payment platform for university lecturers and payment of withheld salaries and non-remittance of check – off dues.

The police have asked Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduagan to cancel her planned Sallah rally in the Central Senatorial district of Kogi State.
The State Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye made this known on Tuesday in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP William Aya.
According to the statement, the Kogi police boss said the rally is against the proclamation on ban on political gathering by the state government issued on Monday.
The statement said, “Following the intelligence report on security threats in Kogi State and the subsequent ban on all forms of Rally and procession by the Kogi State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, Kogi State Police Command has called on the organisers of planned rally at Okene to cancel such event in the interest of the peace in Kogi State.

“The call for cancellation becomes necessary, noting that intelligence reveals that some hoodlums plan to hijack the process and cause disturbance of peace in the State. The Command cannot afford to jeopardize the existing peace the State is currently enjoying.
“In view of the security threat received on the planned rally, the Kogi State Police Command is therefore advising the organisers to cancel the event so as to avoid any breakdown of law and order in the State. As the Command will not hesitate to apply the full wrath of law on any one who causes disturbance of peace and order in the State.”
Despite the Monday proclamation by the state government banning political gathering or rallies, Akpoti-Uduaghan has vowed to continue with her “homecoming”, adding that she’s only coming to the state to celebrate Eid Fitr with her constituents.

Lightning strike kills herder, 12 cows in Kaduna
A tragic incident occurred in Southern Kaduna as a herder, identified as Ibrahim Likit, and at least 12 cows were struck dead by lightning.
The incident took place around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 30, 2025, in Matuak Giwa, Bondon District, Moro’a Chiefdom, Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
According to the Village Head of Matuak Giwa, Simon Ayuba, the young herder was seeking shelter from the rain alongside his cattle when a thunderstrike hit, killing them instantly.
“The herder, along with 12 cows, d!ed on the spot. It was a tragic occurrence that has left the community in shock,” Ayuba said.

Confirming the incident, Mallam Tanko Isiyaka, the Ardo of Bondon District, disclosed that the deceased herder hailed from Bauchi State.
He expressed sadness over the incident and called for prayers and support for the bereaved family as the victim was laid to rest according to Islamic rites.
The occurrence has since stirred grief and sympathy among residents of the area.

A woman, Hajiya Fatima Ahmed Usman, her husband, Alhaji Muhammad Usman, alongside their four other relations reportedly lost their lives in a ghastly motor accident which occurred at Ahoko bridge, along the Abuja-Lokoja highway.
A witness said the incident occurred around 12:34 pm on Sunday, the eidfitr day.
He said the couple and the four others left Toto town in Nasarawa State in an unmarked Honda car to attend a burial of one of their relatives at Kotonkarfe when the accident happened.
He said the car veered off the road and somersaulted into a ditch after a trailer hit the vehicle from behind, adding that all the six occupants died on the spot.
Our reporter learnt that Muhammed Usman was the chairmanship aspirant in the November, 2024, Toto LGA election in the area.
However, the remains of the deceased were evacuated into an ambulance to Toto for burial.
