Islamic banks serving Nigerians well, more coming – CBN gov
The Central Bank of Nigeria on Sunday expressed relief that Nigerians have fully embraced the introduction of Islamic banking years after speculations made the round that it was an attempt to Islamise the country
This was disclosed by the CBN Governor, Yemi Cardoso, at a reception organised to honour the Secretary-General, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Arbitration Centre, Dr Umar Oseni in Abuja.
Cardoso, who was represented by the CBN Director of Legal Services, Kofo Salam-Alada, hinted that more shariah-compliant banks are being considered due to the immense benefits it has brought to the citizens, especially those into small and medium-scale businesses.
The apex bank governor further noted that he was quite impressed that Islamic financial institutions like Jaiz, Tajj, and Alternate Bank have stood the test of time since their establishment.
He said, “Some years back, the Central Bank of Nigeria started a journey for the introduction of the Islamic Banking and Financing in Nigeria. It came when a young man was appointed governor of CBN. But most people never knew that the first person who spearheaded the journey was to be a pastor of the church.

“He was also a part-time pastor when this journey started. So it was never an attempt to Islamise Nigeria or Islamise financing in Nigeria. When the Prince (Emir Sanusi) came, he continued the journey.
And that journey saw some of us, one of you, who is standing before you today, that started the transaction documents that started the relationship with one institution that Dr. Umar Oseni headed for about eight years.
“I am not advertising, but I can say we are proud of Jaiz, Tajj, and Alternate Bank and I believe many more will come. We are happy to drive on roads financed by Sukkuk in Nigeria and more billions will still come. So many products are on the card and Central Bank of Nigeria will not rest until financing gets to the grassroots.”
Reacting, Dr Oseni appreciated the audience who turned up at the event to celebrate his new appointment, saying they are the reason he has come far in life.
The OIC chief also expressed conviction that Islamic banking has come to stay in the country.
“We are living in a world where we are all interconnected. Let us ensure that we make a positive impact on anybody that comes our way. Touch the person positively without expecting appreciation.
“The focus of the OIC Arbitration Centre basically is on investment, financing, and commercial dispute resolution. So, in all the bilateral treaties Nigeria is entering into with other countries, we are going to ensure that there is a clause for dispute settlements,” he assured.

Senate orders probe into $5.792bn Mambila hydroelectric power project
The Senate on Thursday mandated its standing committees on appropriation, power and finance to probe into the entire Mambila Hydroelectric Power Project (MHEPP) transactions from 1999 to date.
The Senate also appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to include the project as one of his major “legacy projects” in the country.
The resolutions were sequel to a motion sponsored by Senator Manu Haruna (Taraba Central) and co-sponsored by a former governor of Gombe State, Senator Danjuma Goje; former Senate President Ahmad Lawan and 26 other senators.
Senator Manu argued that the federal government through the federal Ministry of Power had signed a contract with a consortium of Chinese Contractors comprising CGGC, SHC, and CGOC in 2017, to construct the 3050MW Mambila power plant in Taraba State.

He, however, lamented that the project had not been completed since then.
Contributing, a former governor of Gombe State and former Minister (State) for Power and Steel, Mohammed Danjuma Goje (Gombe Central), appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to break the jinx by making the power plant functional in the interest of the nation.
Senator Goje lamented that despite the huge benefits that Nigerians stand to gain from the plant if completed, the project has suffered a setback sequel to legal issues surrounding it.
He said, “I give my full support to this very important motion that is meant to change the economic landscape of Nigeria.
“Unfortunately, despite the obvious and glaring importance of this project, it has suffered so many setbacks. We hope Mr President, Bola Tinubu will break this jinx by ensuring the take-off of this important project.”

Public schools shine at MSSN’s Lagos Intellectual Competitions
WINNERS have emerged at the finals of the Lagos Intellectual Competitions (LIC) organised by the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Lagos State Area Unit.
The event featured quiz competitions for junior secondary school students, debates for senior secondary school students, and essay writing for undergraduates of tertiary institutions.
In the junior secondary school quiz competition, Royhana Ismail from Vetland Junior Grammar School emerged winner while Farhan Sodiq from Usoolol Iman and Abdul Rahman Olaloye from Taqwa School emerged first and second runners-up respectively.
The debate competition for senior secondary students was won by the team from Badore Community Senior Secondary School, who impressed the judges with their arguments and eloquence. Taqwa High School and Linksbond College clinched the second and third positions respectively.
Aminat Ayinde of Sanya Senior Grammar School won the prize for ‘Best Speaker’ while Azeemah Afolabi from Muhimat Memorial School emerged as the second ‘Best Speaker.’
The undergraduate essay writing competition saw Romlah Shitta from the Lagos State University winning the first prize; Nurudeen Ogundipe from the University of Lagos, second prize and Fathia Abolanle, the third prize.
MSSN Lagos celebrated the winners of the various categories for their performances and for demonstrating passion for knowledge.
The amir (president) of MSSN Lagos, Kamoldeen Abiona, commended the organising team and the participants for making the event a memorable success.

Tinubu to launch Sokoto-Badagry super highway in August – Minister
Engineer Nweze David Umahi, the Minister of Works, has disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would inaugurate the first phase of 1000km Sokoto-Badagry super highway project in August. It is called in Kebbi State.
Umahi made the commitment when stakeholders were engaged in aligning Sokoto and Kebbi states’ phases of the highway at Birnin Kebbi, where work on a 258km stretch in the area-Kebei axis would commence.
The road is relevant to its oldest trans-Sahara trade way, which was launched 48 years ago but implemented now under President Tinubu’s administration (as obtained)
