Despite criminal charges, Doguwa wins Kano Reps seat for 5th term

Majority leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Doguwa, has won the Doguwa/Tudun Wada federal constituency election in Kano.

Sani Ibrahim, the returning officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), announced the results on Saturday.

Doguwa is standing trial over alleged criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, unlawful possession of a firearm, mischief, and public disturbance.

He was declared winner after securing 41,573 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Yushau Salisu of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), who got 34,831 votes.

The Saturday supplementary election was held in eight wards in Tudunwada LGA.

The electoral umpire had announced Doguwa as the winner of the February 25 election for the federal constituency but later declared it inconclusive.

There were reports of over-voting and disruption of voting in some polling units in the area.

At the time the election was declared inconclusive, Doguwa was leading with 39,732 votes while Salisu had 34,798 votes.

Doguwa will be serving his fifth term when the 10th assembly is inaugurated in June.

Doguwa is among the lawmakers said to be seeking to succeed Femi Gbajabiamila as the speaker. However, his legal battle may hinder his ambition.

On February 28, he was arrested at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport while boarding a flight to Abuja.

The lawmaker was arrested after police received a report that he allegedly led thugs to set ablaze the secretariat of the NNPP in Kano, with two persons feared dead.

Although the legislator denied any wrongdoing, he was arraigned on March 1, at a magistrate court in Kano and was subsequently remanded in prison.
After a few days in prison, he was granted bail in the sum of N500 million by a federal high court.

Senate presidency: Orji Kalu, Yari team up against Akpabio

Senate Chief whip, Orji Uzor Kalu, says he is firmly in the race for office of the senate president and has no intention of stepping down.

He spoke on Tuesday in Abuja, adding that he was aligning forces with Abdulaziz Yari, another senate president aspirant and former governor of Zamfara.

The chief whip said the outcome of their meetings would be unveiled soon.

“I won’t step down for anybody. We are talking with (ex-)Governor Yari. Our group and his group are talking, intimate talk and partnership. We will make sure that no one zone can produce the senate presidency,” he said.

He also said, No one zone can produce the president of Nigeria. What we are trying to do with Senator Yari is a united partnership that will work for Nigeria. In the coming days or weeks, that partnership will be unveiled, so we are in serious talks.

“I cannot deny it – Yari is a friend of mine and I’m his friend and we have decided to talk. We have been speaking for the past four weeks and the result will be unveiled by our sponsors, he has his sponsors and I have my sponsors.

“So the sponsors will come together to decide what direction this partnership will be. I’ll be very happy to reveal what the sponsors will say.”
Kalu said he and Yari were seeking to protect the integrity of the Senate and support the new administration of President Bola Tinubu.

His position and Yari is contrary to the stance of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The ruling party had nominated Godswill Akpabio, a former minister of Niger Delta Affairs, for senate president.

LP: Tinubu’s inaugural speech celebration of lies, deceit

The Labour Party says President Bola Tinubu’s inaugural speech is shallow and it is a mere celebration of lies and deceit.

It also noted that the speech showed the “policy incongruity” that the ruling party planned to give to Nigerians and urged the people to resist it.

Reacting to the President’s speech on Monday after his inauguration, the LP National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, said Tinubu’s declaration that he won the election fairly was “a slap on the faces of millions of Nigerians”.

The LP statement read in part, “The Labour Party is disappointed with the inaugural speech made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu today which clearly exposed the shallowness and policy incongruity that his administration, while it lasts, is hoping to bequeath Nigerians.

“But today, Nigerians were aghast with the boldness and glee with which Tinubu declared his election as fair. We consider this audacity as a slap on the faces of millions of Nigerians who voted their conscience but were robbed by a collective power of state institutions and brute bringandry unleashed on them.

“What was witnessed today was a celebration of lies and deceit, and that explains why the streets are like graveyards with no pomp and pageantry usually associated with a major feat like what we had today.

“Again, Labour Party while campaigning told Nigerians that if given the privilege to preside, we will among other things change our economy from consumption to production and we provided tangible ways we can achieve that policy.

“But listening to President Tinubu today reading a speech believed to have been penned by his team, it became obvious that we are returning to the 2015 era where we had great expectations but without any means achieving them.

“We are now calling on the highest office in Nigeria, the office of the people, not to allow this government any space to toil with the destiny of this nation again. APC ruined this nation and we must not allow a worse situation again. We must wake up to our roles of holding accountable those in positions of authority.”
