Edo attack: NRC MD suspects sabotage, another kidnap victim rescued

Some unpatriotic people have been fingered in the recent attacks on train passengers and railway facilities in Nigeria, the latest being the kidnap of 32 people on Saturday from Tom Ikimi train station in the Iguebe community of Edo State.

Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Engr. Fidet Okhiria, disclosed this during an interview on Channels Television.

This is coming just as another victim, a woman, has been reportedly rescued by security agencies combing the forests in the area.

Okhiria wondered why the attacks were coming at a time the Federal Government is embarking on projects to modernise the nation’s railway system and many people were beginning to embrace the rail travel system.

He said the corporation was yet to complete its security architecture of train stations across the country when the latest attack occurred.

He also faulted the proposals being submitted at this time by many consultants on how to secure the railway corridors, pointing out that they were driven by personal financial gains rather than patriotic zeal.

Okhiria said the attacks on the Nigerian Railway system were deliberate and an act of sabotage.

He however said Edo State Commissioner of Police and his men were still in search of the kidnappers and doing everything possible to ensure the release of other victims, adding that the remaining victims were suspected to be divided into groups.

“From what they are saying, I think they divided the people in captive in groups. That is the information I have,” he said.

Asked if there were possibilities that in the next 24 hours another set would be rescued, he said, “We hope so, the intensity the security and community have deployed to ensure that we are not embarrassed.

”I think something good will happen very soon because people have been out there since Saturday and they are still there.”

On the security measures the government had said they put in place to ensure safety of the railway system and what went wrong this time, Okhiria said, “Nothing went wrong. As I said, you plan and you also have people who are trying to sabotage your thoughts.

“At this point, we have not got to the peak of that security architecture we want in our stations, although it is out of the ordinary; we don’t have that in railway operations.

“We have been liaising with the security agents, the Inspector General of Police, Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Air Staff to raise the security committee that the Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Sambo, set up which is made up of the military personnel to ensure that the right people are deployed in our train stations and to the train.

“I don’t think there is perfect security situation. Even the United States, they still tackle security issues. We just pray that Nigerians change their minds because that is the best way we can live in peace and the earlier we apprehend these evil people the better for everyone.”

The NRC boss said further that security measures were not being limited to Abuja-Kaduna or Lagos-Ibadan train stations, adding that it is general security for the railway system.

Okhiria said train services on the Warri-Itakpe corridor had not been halted, noting, however, that the train would not be making a stop at the Tom Ikimi Train Station for now.

Meanwhile, the police have confirmed the rescue of another victim of Saturday kidnap.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Edo State Police Command, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, said, “Yes, a woman has been rescued, making a total of seven persons so far rescued.”

Vanguard reports that police have also deployed helicopter to the area to assist in aerial surveillance of the forests in the area.

A leader in the community, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “All the security agencies have gone back to the forest this morning (yesterday) but one of the operatives told me that they are tracking the kidnappers and their victims but if they want to use force, they will jeopardize the safety of those in captivity.

”They want to be tactical and professional in the way they want to go about it. As we speak, about two hours ago (2pm), they brought a helicopter and the helicopter is flying around the area, the security agents are working, let us see what will come out of it. Our prayer is that those people are released unhurt.”

NRC suspends Warri-Itakpe train after multiple engine failure

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) on Thursday announced the suspension of its Warri-Itakpe train service, after it experienced multiple technical issues.

The standard gauge train was said to have broken down midway on Tuesday, creating some panic situation among passengers on board.
It said in a statement that the decision to suspend the train operation would allow its technical team “to conduct a full audit, resolve all identified issues, and restore safe and reliable service.”
The NRC statement signed by Henrietta Eregare of the NRC Public Relations Department, read in part, “The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) wishes to inform the general public and our valued passengers that a significant disruption occurred on the Warri-Itakpe rail line on Tuesday, April 9, 2025, due to multiple technical issues involving a train engine failure.
“Management has consequently suspended train services on the route for 72 hours.
“The disruption commenced at approximately 1:38pm and affected both the 8am departure from Warri and the 2pm train from Itakpe.
“Emergency recovery protocols were immediately activated but also suffered a setback due to engine failures.”
It recalled how the corporation swiftly arranged for the safe evacuation of all passengers through road transportation with adequate security presence.
“Passengers were guided off the affected train to waiting cars approximately 500 meters from the track.
It stated, “Some Passengers chose to arrange their own transportation before the arrival of official recovery vehicles—a decision NRC understands given the delay.”
The corporation also disclosed that adequate arrangements had been made for a full refund of the value of tickets to passengers involved in the disrupted trains.
Those interested in using their tickets for future trips can take advantage of the revalidation option, according to the NRC.
“Refund and revalidation process is available on our online ticketing platforms, via our customer service lines, and at all NRC stations,” the statement added.
It expressed regret for the inconvenience caused by the unexpected disruption.
It said, “The Nigerian Railway Corporation takes full responsibility and is actively working to restore normal operations as quickly as possible. We remain committed to the safety, reliability, and comfort of our passengers.”

NRC, Plateau sign MoU to revive Jos–Kuru train

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and Plateau State Government have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to restore and operate the historic Jos–Kuru rail corridor.

The agreement was signed at the NRC Lagos headquarters on Monday by the Commissioner for Transportation in Plateau State, Mr Jatau Davou, and the NRC Managing Director, Dr Kayode Opeifa.

This is contained in a statement by the NRC Media Team, adding that it marks a significant milestone in efforts to boost economic activity, reduce transportation costs, and improve mobility in Plateau State and beyond.

Davou, who represented the Plateau State Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, expressed profound gratitude to the Minister of Transportation, Hon. Said Ahmed Alkali, and the new NRC Managing Director, Dr Opeifa, for their unwavering support despite numerous challenges.

He said, “This is not just about rail transportation; it is about restoring hope and economic prosperity to our people. “We appreciate the United Nations for debunking negative narratives about our dear state and reaffirming our commitment to national development.”

Jos–Kuru line, according to the statement, a segment of the historic Kafanchan–Kuru route, will serve as a vital link between the Western and Eastern rail corridors.

It will connect local communities, support farmers and traders with efficient cargo movement, and ultimately drive down the cost and duration of travel within the state.

“While the service will initially operate on the existing narrow gauge, plans are underway to expand to modern standard gauge networks as part of a broader national railway modernisation programme,” it stated.

In his remarks, Opeifa emphasized the importance of federal-state cooperation in infrastructure development, lauding the Plateau State government’s proactive role in restoring the once-abandoned rail tracks.

“This partnership demonstrates how government at all levels can collaborate beyond politics, to deliver tangible benefits to Nigerians.

We’re not just bringing trains; we’re bringing back dignity, economic empowerment, and national integration,” Opeifa added.

He also clarified that recent reports of railway assets being stolen were misinformed.

“Those coaches were not stolen. They were redeployed to Plateau where they are now being rehabilitated and put to productive use.”

With the NRC committing to station a dedicated business manager in Plateau to oversee operations, the project is expected to generate jobs, stimulate local businesses, and offer new advertising and entertainment opportunities through train services, the statement added.

He disclosed that the Minister of Transportation, Alkali, threw his full weight behind this project, reaffirming President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and pledging the full support of the Federal Government in ensuring that it delivered full dividends of rail services to the average Nigerians who badly needed these services.

Opeifa said, “We will continue to (provide functional) rail across Nigeria — from Jos to Borno, from Aba to Port Harcourt, and everywhere in between. This is a new dawn for Nigerian rail.”

He said he looked forward to the commencement of commercial operation on the corridor anytime soon, in order to assure the people of the Plateau of the commitment of the FG under the Tinubu administration to take rail transportation all parts of Nigeria.

NRC ready for Lagos-Kano cargo train services – Opeifa

…says railway properties are national assets not scrap

Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation Dr Kayode Opeifa has declared that the Western district is ready for cargo train movement between Lagos and Kano on the narrow gauge.

He stated this at Dugbe, the Ibadan Narrow Gauge Train Station, after inspecting Moniya Freight Park, in Ibadan, Oyo State, during the tour of operations on the Western Line, as part of his inspection of all districts which commenced on Friday.

The NRC MD also stressed that no property of the corporation should be seen as scrap but critical national assets that must be treasured, according to a statement released the NRC MD media team.

He said, “The essence of this tour is to enable us to access our readiness to handle the cargo side of our business as business and logistics facilitator.
“We are happy with the extent of what we have seen and we can comfortably say we are ready to move any manner of cargo for any of our customers.”

Opeifa had commenced the tour from the Mobolaji Johnson Train Station at Ebute Metta, Lagos, where he inspected the facilities available for passengers’ convenience.
At his next stop at Omi Adio, he inspected the facility being put in place to establish another cargo park there. He directed the acquisition of more land around the proposed dry port area to provide for anticipated business the dry port would be processing when the business finally comes on stream.
Opeifa was joined on the inspection at the Ladoke Akintola Train Station, Omi Adio, by the Director General of Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN Commission) Dr. Seye Oyeleye, who expressed the readiness to work with the NRC to reactivate the narrow gauge line within some of the states in the South-West for mass transportation.
The inspection took NRC boss and his management team to the Obafemi Awolowo Train Station, Moniya and the Moniya Cargo Park, where he inspected the readiness of the port to facilitate cargo business.
He also inspected the Western District Headquarters at Dugbe, Ibadan, where he charged the workers to double their efforts and improve the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the railway.
“I can approve an improvement in your allowances once we improve our IGR. So let us be committed to doubling our efforts,” he said.
Opeifa said the management wt determined to recommence cargo commitment from Lagos to Kano, even as he said he would be at Ibadan to flag off the Dugbe end of the movement once the service begins.
He also commended all railway women, urging them to continue to prove their mettle in keeping the wheel of the rail going.
Addressing the welfare of pensioners, Opeifa said the corporation would continue to work at improving their welfare.
“I don’t need to be told, I can feel so many things and I can only assure you that the management will continue to work at improving your living conditions,” he said.
He reiterated his call for vandals to stop sabotaging the corporation’s effort at improving its services.
“Let me emphasize again that there are no scraps in the Nigerian Railway Corporation. All we have are rail materials. All our materials are in serviceable conditions.
“From here we are moving cement from Ewekoro to Osogbo and to Ilorin. All these wagons you see, all these rail sleepers, all the iron are still working and all security operatives have been directed to arrest and prosecute anyone caught vandalising our property.
“No one is permitted to carry our materials. No letter of approval is sufficient to allow anyone to do so, security operatives should put a call across to us to enable us authenticate such activity,” he said.
