House of Reps avoids debate on fuel subsidy

House of Representatives on Tuesday failed to debate the removal of the subsidy announced by the new administration of Bola Tinubu.

Although the matter was mentioned, the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, prevented it from being debated.

The subsidy motion was merely moved by Jide Jimoh (APC, Lagos) and the Speaker almost immediately hit the gavel on the note of commendation for the President to have had the courage to announce the removal.

Tinubu on Monday pronounced that petroleum subsidy no longer existed.

His pronouncement caused instant shock in the petroleum downstream sector as queues appeared at filling stations in major cities across the country.

Moving the motion, Jimoh said the President is “a concern senior citizen whose agenda is to favour the downtrodden for the purpose of humanity.”

He commended Tinubu for his pronouncement on the subsidy regime during his inauguration speech, adding that the position was consistent with the law as there is “no provision for fuel subsidy in the 2023 Appropriation Act.”

Speaker overrules

After he presented his motion, several lawmakers indicated interest to speak on the motion but the speaker put the motion to vote and ruled.

Gbajabiamila, a close ally of the President, deliberately prevented members from speaking on the motion. When the members protested, he said he had hit the gavel and could not reverse himself.

Gbajabiamila said the lawmakers could make comments on the subsidy in the course of the session even though it would not have any effect on the motion.

“There is no breach of privilege. We have hit the gravel, and we cannot go back. As we go along, for anyone that wants to speak on the issue of subsidy, I am giving the leeway even though it would fall on the sword of relevance, and may not be relevant to be talking about subsidy on another motion. But you can go ahead to talk about subsidy after talking about the issue at hand,” he said.

Resolutions

The House resolved to commend Tinubu’s courage and boldness to serve the country with honesty and integrity.

The House appealed to Nigerians to remain patient, resilient and prayerful so that the president can deliver on his promises.

Church testimony: Vera Anyim speaks after meeting with Pastor Enenche

Anyim Vera, the lady accused of giving false testimony at Abuja’s Dunamis International Gospel Centre, has stated that she holds no malice against the church.

A viral video from Sunday shows the church’s senior pastor, Paul Enenche, doubting the legitimacy of the woman’s testimony at his Abuja church.

Enenche interrupted the woman, who claimed to have graduated with a “BSc in Law” from Nigeria’s National Open University, and accused her of lying.

He told her that the way she spoke did not indicate that she was a law graduate. He also informed her that there is no such thing as a “BSc in Law” and ordered that she vacate the alter.

The video received varied comments, with many requesting that the pastor apologize to the woman. Anyim, however, stated in a Facebook post on Monday that she had moved on from the issue.

Anyim made this statement after meeting Enenche and his wife, Becky.

She wrote, “I want to inform the whole world that I just had a warm meeting with my spiritual father and mother, Dr. Paul Enenche and Dr. Becky Enenche.

“I don’t have any grudges against the church or them. I remain committed to serving God as a member of Dunamis Church.

“I am thankful for the concern of the public.

“I have put the situation at my back, and I have moved forward, and I want everybody to do the same. Peace.”

We rescued over 1000 abductees without paying ransom – Ribadu

The National Security Adviser, NSA, Nuhu Ribadu, says the Federal Government has rescued over 1,000 victims of verified mass abduction across the country without paying ransom.

Ribadu disclosed this on Monday, in Abuja while receiving 22 rescued students and staff of the Federal University Gusau, that the covert operations were conducted in the last few months.

He said the successful rescue operations were testimonies to the efforts of the government to free all those being unlawfully held in captivity.

“We have so far released over a thousand of such victims without noise and in complete respect for their privacy and safety.

“We released people from Zambara, Sokoto, Kaduna, Katsina, Taraba, Adamawa, and so many other states.

“Thousands, but never said a word and we thank God for that, and maybe that is the reason why we are so far very successful.

“This occasion marks a final juncture in a series of rescues we have undertaken in the last few months to free victims of recent cases of mass abductions that are verified.

“It is making a difference, it is a matter of time and we will see the outcome of the work we are doing,” he said.

The NSA said the victims were rescued unhurt and without any of the female abductees molested, adding that it was a marked departure from what had been the case in the past.

According to him, going forward, the government is strengthening law enforcement and security measures to prevent further abductions.

He added that the government would strengthen physical security across vulnerable communities in the country.

“This work is done by our security forces, our armed forces, our police, our intelligence agencies.

“All of us collectively have done this work together and we all are fully participating and this is the outcome of it,” he said.

Ribadu commended the leadership of President Bola Tinubu for working assiduously to address insecurity in the country.

According to him, the efforts have led to great improvement in recent times in taming terrorist attacks.

Recall that those rescued were abducted from the school on September 22, 2023, when bandits attacked three off-campus students’ hostels at Sabon Gida in Gusau.

Those kidnapped from the university included female students, some male artisans, a private security guard and a protocol officer.

Tinubu will use data-driven assessment to evaluate ministers – Hadiza Usman

Hadiza Bala-Usman, President Bola Tinubu’s special adviser on policy coordination, has disclosed that the federal government’s citizens’ delivery tracker will employ empirical data to assess ministers’ performance.

During a live programme titled Hard Facts on Nigerian Info 99.3FM radio, Bala-Usman clarified the mechanism behind the tracker’s efficiency. She emphasized that the assessment isn’t based on general opinions but on data-supported evidence.

“It’s not a popularity contest; it’s specific-based. The data will speak for itself, such as the increased crude oil production or the number of passports issued. We’re adopting a data-driven approach to evaluate ministers’ performance,” she explained.

Addressing concerns about insecurity, Bala-Usman highlighted it as the President’s second priority after economic reform. She affirmed President Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to tackling this issue head-on.

In response to a caller’s scepticism regarding trust in the tracker, particularly in light of alleged revelations about the Nigeria Customs Service, Bala-Usman mentioned establishing a panel to investigate such allegations.

“A panel has been convened to address these allegations, and the Customs Service is actively engaging with it,” she stated.

Oriyomi Anthony, a development expert, praised Tinubu’s administration for launching the tracker and expressed optimism about its potential impact. He noted that while doubts lingered initially, the initiative signalled a serious commitment to governance and collaboration with the private sector.

“I see a government that’s adopting a private sector mindset, which instils confidence that government affairs will be handled more efficiently,” Anthony remarked, highlighting the potential for a positive change under Tinubu’s leadership.
