Court jails Lagos woman three years for N14.5m fraud

Justice O. A. Okunuga of the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, Lagos, on Thursday, May 15, 2025, convicted and sentenced one Ajanaku Oluwatomilola to three years imprisonment for N14.5m fraud.

The convict was re-arraigned by the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on April 14, 2024 on a six-count charge bordering on stealing, obtaining money and property by false pretence and retention to the tune of N14.5m.

The defendant, sometime in 2021, received the sum of N14.5m from some petitioners as investment capital. It was agreed that the return on investment would run for three months.

The defendant, however, reneged on the agreement as she stopped payment of the agreed return on investment to the petitioners after two months.

According to the EFCC, investigation revealed that the defendant (Ajanaku Oluwatomilola) did not have a licence to conduct capital market operations or call for investments from the members of the public.

One of the counts reads: “That you, Ajanaku Oluwatomilola, trading under the name and style of Yenniegoldie Signature, sometime in 2021 in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, with intent to defraud, stole and dishonestly converted to your own, the sum of N5,000,000 (five million naira), property of one Truetalk Telecom Services, thereby committed an offence of stealing, contrary to Section 280 and punishable under Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”

Ajanaku Oluwatomilola pleaded “not guilty” to the charge preferred against her, thereby leading to her trial.

During the trial, the prosecution counsel, F. Ofoma, called four witnesses, including Christopher Ameh, an investigative officer with the EFCC, and the petitioners.

The defence counsel, O. Ajanaku, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy, saying “the convict is a first-time offender and he is remorseful.”

He also told the court that he would ensure that restitution is paid to the nominal petitioners.

Delivering judgment, Justice Okunuga found the defendant guilty on three counts of stealing and sentenced her to one year imprisonment on each of the counts.

She was, however, discharged of the counts of obtaining money and property by false pretence and retention.

The judge also ordered her to make restitution to the petitioners to the tune of N6,000,000 (six million naira).

Terrorists Attack Borno, Kill Soldiers, Abduct Women, Children

Suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP militants launched a deadly attack on a military base and an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Ngoshe town, Gwoza Local Government Area, Borno State, killing soldiers and civilians and abducting scores of women and children. The assault occurred Wednesday, shortly after residents broke their fast during Ramadan, and has left the community devastated.

According to local security sources, the militants overpowered troops stationed at the 82 Division Task Force Battalion, killing at least nine soldiers and forcing others to retreat. The insurgents also burned armored tanks, operational vehicles, and structures in the IDP camp, before abducting an estimated 100 women and children. Eyewitnesses reported that the town’s Chief Imam was killed during the attack, intensifying the horror among residents.

The attack caused widespread panic as residents fled Ngoshe toward Pulka town, leaving homes and property behind. Survivors described the militants as heavily armed and organized, capable of carrying out a coordinated assault on both military and civilian targets. Authorities have yet to confirm the full casualty toll, and many families remain unaccounted for.

Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, condemned the attack and confirmed that hundreds of civilians and soldiers were affected. He urged the government to intensify military operations in insurgent strongholds such as the Sambisa Forest and Mandara Mountains, where Boko Haram and ISWAP maintain bases.

In response to the attack, the Nigerian Air Force and ground troops conducted precision operations along the insurgents’ withdrawal routes, reportedly neutralizing several militants and disrupting their escape. Despite these efforts, the incident underscores the persistent threat posed by extremist groups in northeastern Nigeria, particularly in Borno State, which remains vulnerable to large-scale attacks and abductions.

The assault highlights ongoing security challenges in areas returning refugees and IDPs from neighboring countries, illustrating the urgent need for enhanced military and humanitarian interventions to protect vulnerable communities.

Leadership Reshuffle: IGP Tunji Disu Removes Hundeyin as Nigeria Police Force PRO

The newly sworn‑in Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tunji Disu has officially removed Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Benjamin Hundeyin from his position as the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), just six months after his appointment. This move marks one of the first major personnel changes under IGP Disu’s leadership. The decision, finalized Thursday morning at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja, comes less than 24 hours after President Bola Tinubu inaugurated Disu as the 23rd substantive IGP, replacing Kayode Egbetokun. While no official explanation has been provided, sources say the removal is part of a broader restructuring and modernization effort within the Force.

ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, a native of Badagry, Lagos State, was appointed FPRO by former IGP Kayode Egbetokun. Hundeyin holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Language from Lagos State University and a Master’s degree in Legal Criminology and Security Psychology from the University of Ibadan. He has also completed specialized training in Civil-Military Coordination at the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Training Centre, Jaji. Professionally, Hundeyin is affiliated with the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), International Public Relations Association (IPRA), and Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM).

READ ALSO:

Hundeyin’s career highlights include serving as Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Zone 2 Command, Lagos, and participating in the United Nations–African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID). His removal reflects the common practice of new IGPs reorganizing their core teams to align with their strategic priorities. While Hundeyin was widely respected for his professional expertise and communication skills, the change is seen as part of IGP Disu’s plan to build a team aligned with his vision for the Nigeria Police Force.

Sources at the Force Headquarters described a tense atmosphere as officers await the announcement of Hundeyin’s successor. The Nigeria Police Force is expected to release a formal statement soon to ensure continuity in public relations as IGP Disu implements his reform agenda. This change underscores a fast-moving police leadership transition and signals IGP Disu’s commitment to restructuring key positions in line with his vision for a modernized and transparent Nigeria Police Force.

Army Kills Notorious Kidnapper, Rescues Four Hostages in Edo

Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 4 Brigade under 2 Division, working alongside the Edo State Security Corps, have successfully neutralised a notorious kidnapper, rescued four abducted victims, and arrested another suspect during coordinated security operations in Edo State. The operations were conducted on March 3, 2026, under Operation IGBO DANU 1, targeting criminal hideouts in Warake Forest, Auchi Local Government Area, and Ujemen in Esan West Local Government Area.

According to Capt. Kennedy Anyanwu, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for 4 Brigade, the troops acted after receiving reports of gunshots in Warake Forest. During the night operation, soldiers, supported by personnel from the Nigerian Army School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and local vigilantes, confronted the gang. The encounter resulted in the death of a notorious kidnapper who had been terrorising the Auchi area, while other criminals abandoned their captives and fled into the forest.

Four victims — Stella Abbas (29), Tina Ododa (19), Razak Rashid (27), and Mutanibi Kalifa (16) — were rescued unharmed and later reunited with their families. The troops also recovered several items from the scene, including ₦650,000 in cash, mobile phones, a power bank, and footwear believed to belong to the criminal gang.

In a separate operation in Ujemen, Esan West Local Government Area, the military and Edo State Security Corps raided a suspected kidnapper’s hideout. During the raid, a 39-year-old suspect named Omogbegha Solomon was arrested. Troops discovered a shrine containing charms and photographs of various individuals in an abandoned room within the compound. The shrine was destroyed on-site, and the suspect was handed over to the Nigeria Police Force, Ekpoma Division, for further investigation.

Brigadier General Ahmed Balogun, Commander of 4 Brigade, commended the troops for their bravery and professionalism, noting that these operations align with directives from the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 2 Division, Major General Chinedu Nnebeife, to maintain peace and security across Edo State.

The operations reflect an intensified offensive against kidnapping and criminal syndicates, particularly in forested regions of the state that have frequently harboured criminals. Residents and community leaders have welcomed the success, urging sustained action to dismantle criminal networks and protect lives and property.
