Court adjourns Sanusi’s suit challenging banishment to Nasarawa
Justice Anwuli Chikere of a Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed November 30 for judgment in a suit filed by the deposed Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi challenging his banishment to Awe, a remote community in Nasarawa State.
Recall that the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria was deposed after a resolution by the Kano State Executive Council on March 9, 2020.
He was subsequently banished to Awe, where he was confined until he was released on March 13, 2020 following an interim order for his release by the same court.
Justice Chikere, however, on Thursday fixed November 30 for judgment after taking final arguments from lawyers representing parties in the fundamental rights enforcement suit.
Respondents, in the suit with Ref. No: FHC/ABJ/CS/357/2020, were the Inspector-General of Police, State Director, Department of State Services, Attorney-General of Kano State and the Attorney-General of the Federation.
Sanusi’s lead counsel, Abubakar Mahmoud (SAN), in his final submission said. “This is not a chieftaincy matter. The applicant (Sanusi) is not challenging the respondents’ action as regards his removal as Emir of Kano, but the way he was bundled to Abuja and banished to a remote location.”
Mamoud faulted the respondents’ challenge to the Abuja court’s jurisdiction to hear the case, arguing that “no law support the position that where rights violation occurs across several jurisdictions, one cannot approach a court in any of the jurisdictions.”
He argued that his client’s rights were violated, and as such, he was entitled to seek protection from the court
In his response, lawyer for the IGP, Victor Okoye faulted the competence of the suit and queried the jurisdiction of the court to hear it, saying the instrument conveying the ex-emir’s banishment was authored and endorsed by an official of the Kano State Government in Kano State.
He argued that the appropriate venue for Sanusi to seek redress for the alleged violation of his rights was a court in Kano State.
Lawyer for the DG of the DSS, Godwin Agbadua, urged the court to strike out the suit on the grounds that the alleged rights violation occurred in Kano.
Also, the counsel for Attorney-General of Kano State, Musa Mohammed (the Director of Civil Litigation of the State Ministry of Justice), also faulted the jurisdiction of the court in Abuja to hear the case and prayed the court to dismiss the suit.

I’m alive, Obasanjo reacts to death rumour
Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has said he is alive, hale and hearty.
He stated this in reaction to rumours of his death being reportedly spread on some social media platforms.
He spoke in Osogbo, Osun State, during the inauguration of the Old-Garage/Oke-Fia Road reconstructed by Governor Ademola Adeleke.
Obasanjo said those who wanted him dead were spreading the rumour of his death on the social media.
He said, “I heard the rumour that I was dead. I saw it on the social media. I quickly told my children and my relations that it was not true and that I’m alive.
“Those that want me dead, that is their wish, but God still keeps me alive.”
Obasanjo praised Adeleke for his performance in Osun and charged the governor to keep up the work.
Governor Adeleke assured the people of the state that his administration would complete all the ongoing projects.
“My dear people of Osun State, our administration has constructed over 120 kilometres of roads across the state.
“Two major flyovers are also progressing to completion at Osogbo while work is progressing at the Ile Ife Flyover and Ilesa dualisation.”

Yahaya Bello reports to EFCC office with lawyers
A former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, on Tuesday visited the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to honour another invitation extended to him over alleged misappropriation of funds.
Bello went to the anti-graft office with his lawyers in the morning.
The ex-Kogi governor reportedly drove himself to the EFCC’s office in a black Toyota Hilux van with some lawyers.
He was said to have been taken by some operatives of the agency and are currently being grilled.
This is coming after the Supreme Court judgment which dismissed a suit brought by some state governments challenging the constitutionality of the agency.
The EFCC at the last hearing on November 14, sought the adjournment till November 27 in the fresh case it instituted against Bello.
It stated that the 30-day window was still running for the summons earlier issued.
