Osun tops number of applicants for student loan
The Managing Director of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Mr Akintunde Sawyer, has disclosed that Osun State has the highest number of applicants for the loan.
Speaking in Osogbo, the state capital, at a meeting with Governor Nurudeen Ademola Jackson Adeleke, Sawyer said Osun came first in terms of responsiveness and filling of requisite institutional and students data among the 36 States of the federation.
Explaining the significance of the education loan fund, Sawyer said the targeted beneficiaries are indigents students, noting that the critical step to reaching each student is credible data gathering in which he said Osun is leading other states.
He lauded Governor Adeleke for embracing the vision of President Bola Tinubu on the loan scheme.
Responding, Governor Adeleke commended President Tinubu for activating the initiative.

“We express our appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for creating this Funding initiative as a response to the many challenges facing our student population.
“We commend the President for demonstrating strong political will by fast tracking not only the establishment of the Fund but its effective take off.
Adeleke said Osun is willing to partner with the Federal Government for the benefit of people of the state.
“When it comes to bringing dividends of democracy to our people, we are blind to partisan politics. Our focus is the improvement of the lives of our people irrespective of where it is coming from.”
“As a government, we see the Fund as a veritable platform to provide a lifeline for many indigents students in our various schools. The initiative promises to remove the pain and hardship experienced by many brilliant students in the area of funding. Again, we are elated by the prospects and opportunities for our students , hence our launching into the programme with all machinery of government.”

JAMB unveils new novel ‘The Lekki Headmaster’ for Use of English
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the introduction of a new novel for the Use of English section of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME).
This update was shared in a brief post on the board’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday. The novel, which is part of the examination syllabus, is expected to serve as a core material for candidates preparing for the 2025 UTME.
JAMB regularly updates its reading materials to ensure students engage with diverse and enriching content, and this move aligns with the board’s commitment to maintaining high academic standards.
The new novel, ‘The Lekki Headmaster’ by Kabir Garba replaces ‘Life Changer’ by Khadijat Jalli which was used in the 2024 UTME.

JAMB noted that details on the 2025 registration exercise would be announced later.
“Attention prospective 2025 UTME candidates! This is to inform you that The Lekki Headmaster by Kabir Alabi Garba has been approved as the reading text for the Use of English. Details on the UTME/DE registration shall be released shortly. Kindly be on the lookout for updates,” the post reads.
2025 UTME
Annually, over 1.5 million candidates take the UTME, an entrance examination into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
After passing the Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE), individuals seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions are required to pass the computer-based UTME tests with a minimum score usually set by the institutions.
While the 2025 registration exercise has not yet begun, JAMB stated that it has already commenced the accreditation of registration centres in preparation for the upcoming exercise.

The Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has clarified figures in the 2025 budget proposal presented to the National Assembly Joint Committee on Finance.
Oloyede, while fielding questions from newsmen on the sidelines of an event in Abuja on Tuesday, dismissed reports making the rounds that the board spent huge amount on fumigation and meals, among other items in 2024.
Oloyede stated that the board’s total expenditure for fumigation across all states in 2024 was less than N1 million.
He said that what was presented before the committee was not the 2024 expenditure but the 2025 budget proposal.
He added that claims regarding humongous spending in 2024 on meals or fumigation, security and cleaning were totally unfounded.
“I want to say emphatically, without any iota of doubt, that I never presented any budget performance of 2024 before the National Assembly yesterday. I think it’s a lot of misunderstanding.
“I did not talk about 2024 budget performance. And we did not spend any money, any humongous money in 2024.
“Indeed, what we spent on fumigation in the whole state of the federation, all offices in 2024, not up to N1 million. And what we budgeted for 2025 for fumigation is less than N2 million,” he said.

Oloyede explained that the misunderstanding arose because the detailed breakdown of the budget proposal was not fully reviewed during the presentation.
On the N6.5 billion allegedly spent on training in 2024, Oloyede said the money was just a proposal for 2025 that cut across various budget lines.
He added that this included monitoring of examination, admission expenses, e-facilities payment and awards for best higher education institutions.

TESCOM begins promotion exercise for eligible Lagos teachers

The Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) has commenced the Revised Structure Training Programme (RSTP) for teachers who are due for promotion in education districts across the state to empower them in optimal service delivery.
Chairman of TESCOM, Mrs Victoria Peregrino, who visited the teachers during the exercise on Monday at Ikeja Senior Grammar School, Bolade, Oshodi, and Government College Hall, Agege, challenged the eligible teachers to be confident, diligent, proactive and passionate about the profession.
The RSTP, which is part of the promotion exercise, began simultaneously across the six education districts in Lagos State for teachers eligible for promotion in 2025.
Peregrino advised the eligible teachers to pay attention to details and allow the knowledge gained from the training programme to reflect in the good conducts of the students under their supervision.
“I charge the eligible teachers to take all of the exercise seriously because it will help them to improve, impart knowledge and have good relationship with their students including other benefits,” she added.
The programme is part of build-up for 2025 promotion exercise for teachers on level 7-10 in post primary schools, which includes, Spadev scoring and RSTP.
At least 280 teachers in district 6 reportedly visited by the chairman and her entourage are taking part in the exercise holding simultaneously in other education districts across Lagos State.
Permanent Secretary, TESCOM, Mrs Adebopo Oyekan-Ismaila, said that the idea was to further exposed teachers on grade level 8 on 21st century skills in teaching world as well as T.H.E.A.M.E.S + Agenda under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration.
Oyekan-Ismaila encouraged the teachers to be committed and set goals as the exercise will enable them professional skills needed to ensure that students remain the best in the country and in sub-Saharan Africa.
She however called on the facilitators to give their best and address every topic thoroughly to the officers during the programme, while wishing them success in the final stage of the process been the promotion exercise.
A participant in the programme, Yetunde Onikoyi, who shared her experience, thanked the Commission for the initiative, describing the exercise as impactful.
“I thank the Lagos State Government for this opportunity. This programme has improved my knowledge on classroom management, how to interact better with my students irrespective of their learning pace while teaching them,” she stated.
Also, Mrs Abidemi Aloba, a resource person, said that the programme had become necessary as it would broaden teachers understanding beyond their areas of specialisation and enable them to navigate challenges in the modern teaching era.
According to her, part of the emphasis on this programme is to let them know that no child should be written off but they need to exercise patience and apply the right skill to get them to learn and understand.
