Supreme Court declares Udofia A’Ibom APC gov candidate
The Supreme Court on Tuesday declared Akan Udofia as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom State.
A former senator, Ita Enang, had sought to nullify Udofia’s nomination as the governorship candidate of the party in the state. He wanted the court to declare him as the authentic governorship flagbearer of the party on the ground that Udofia was not an APC member as of May 27, 2022 when the party conducted the governorship primary.
A five-member panel of the Supreme Court, led by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, held that Udofia was a bona fide member of the APC when it held the primary election.
The apex court held that a political party has the “prerogative” to grant anyone membership waivers.
“I am in full agreement with the lower court that Udofia was a member of the APC when he contested for the primary, and that the issue of a waiver is an internal affair of a party which the court cannot inquire into.
The justice after affirming Udofia’s candidacy further held that Enang’s case collapsed.
“Having held that the 1st respondent duly participated in the primary election, the foundation of the appellant case collapsed.
The appeal in my view was rightly dismissed by the lower court,” Kekere-Ekun said.
A Federal High Court in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State capital, had on November 14, 2022 set aside Udofia’s nomination as the APC governorship candidate for the state.
The judge, Agatha Okeke, had ordered the APC to conduct a fresh primary within 14 days but barred Udofia from participating in the new election.
Dissatisfied with Okeke’s decision, Udofia filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal in Abuja. The appellate court on January 19 set aside the judgment of the lower court and restored his candidacy.
In its verdict, the appellate court faulted Okeke’s judgement on the basis that the court erred in entertaining the matter in contravention of Sections 97 and 98 of the Sheriffs Act.

PDP Heads to Court Over FCT Polls, Cites Video Evidence of Irregularities
PDP Heads to Court Over FCT Polls, Cites Video Evidence of Irregularities
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced plans to challenge the outcome of the February 21, 2026 Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory, declaring that it is heading to court with what it described as strong video and documentary evidence of electoral irregularities.
The move follows the conclusion of voting across the six FCT area councils — Abaji, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje and Kwali — with official results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) showing a clear advantage for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to the results, the APC won chairmanship seats in Abaji, AMAC, Bwari and Kwali, while the PDP recorded its only victory in Gwagwalada Area Council.
PDP Sets Up Legal Team
In a statement signed by the party’s spokesperson, Ini Ememobong, the PDP disclosed that it has constituted a special legal team to prosecute all election-related petitions arising from the FCT council polls. The team is headed by the party’s National Legal Adviser, Shafi Bara’u.

The party urged all its candidates dissatisfied with the election outcomes to immediately submit petitions and supporting materials, warning that delays could weaken their cases at the election tribunals.
Claims of Intimidation and Manipulation
The PDP accused security agencies and other actors of interfering in the electoral process, alleging widespread intimidation, vote suppression, and manipulation at polling units and during result collation.
“We specifically congratulate the Chairman-elect of Gwagwalada Area Council, Mohammed Kasim, and the councillors declared successful by INEC,” the statement said.
“This victory, though fewer than expected, is particularly significant given the background of unprecedented intimidation, high-powered money politics, and brazen executive brigandage witnessed during the elections.”
The party insisted it has visual records allegedly showing armed security personnel carting away result sheets, intimidating voters, and influencing outcomes in several polling units.
Voter Apathy and Electoral Reform
Beyond the legal challenge, the PDP blamed low voter turnout on what it described as declining public trust in Nigeria’s electoral system. The party argued that repeated controversies surrounding elections have weakened confidence among voters.
It warned that the FCT council elections could be a signal ahead of the 2027 general elections if urgent reforms are not implemented.
Call for Intervention
The opposition party called on the President and the National Assembly to urgently intervene by reforming the electoral framework, strengthening transparency, and limiting security interference in elections.
With post-election litigation now looming, political focus in the FCT is shifting from the ballot box to the courtroom as parties prepare for legal battles that could reshape grassroots governance in the nation’s capital.

Election officials described the bye‑poll as largely peaceful, with security agencies deployed across major polling units. Observers noted low voter turnout in some areas, but overall, voting and accreditation proceeded without significant disruption. The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Rivers State, Prof. Gabriel Yomere, also confirmed the orderly conduct of the bye‑election.
The bye-election was necessitated by the vacancy in the Rivers State House of Assembly following the departure of the former lawmaker representing the constituency. Napoleon’s victory is part of a broader trend in which APC is consolidating its position in the Rivers State legislature, alongside other recent bye-election wins, including Khana State Constituency II, further bolstering the party’s influence in the state.
Napoleon, speaking shortly after his declaration, thanked voters for their participation and commended INEC and security personnel for ensuring a smooth process. He encouraged citizens to remain engaged in the democratic process and promised to represent the constituency effectively in the House of Assembly.
