Pressure Mounts On Pinnick To Resign Over Qatar 2022 Failure
The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Mr Amaju Melvin Pinnick, has come under sustained pressure from Nigerian football stakeholders who want him to resign immediately from his exalted office.
This is not unconnected with the recent failure of Nigeria’s senior national football team, the Super Eagles, to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
It will be recalled that on Tuesday, March 29, the three-time African champions drew 1-1 with the Black Stars of Ghana in the return leg of the
final round qualifiers for this year’s World Cup and were eliminated on the away goal rule.
Super Eagles’ failure did not go down well with millions of disappointed Nigerians, including the number one citizen, President Muhammadu Buhari, who had stormed the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Abuja to give support to their darling team.
Consequently, as soon as the match ended, some of the fans who could not bear the pain of the monumental loss went berserk as they invaded the pitch and vandalised facilities at the stadium.
The players were also not spared as some of the angry fans attempted to attack them physically but were restrained due to the timely intervention of the security personnel on duty.
As a follow up, most football stakeholders immediately called on the president of the NFF, Pinnick and his board members to resign without further ado as they blamed the failure of the Super Eagles on the football federation’s ineffective leadership.

However, instead of the board resigning, it decided to throw Coach Austin Eguavoen and his technical crew members under the bus. The NFF terminated the appointment of members of the technical crew and announced that in a short while, new coaches would be appointed to lead the senior national team.
Behold a serial failure
For those who believe Pinnick and his colleagues are solely responsible for the failure of the Super Eagles, the sack of Eguavoen and his assistants was nothing more than a diversionary tactic. Consequently, calls for him to resign from his position have continued unabated. Such Nigerians are upset that apart from losing the 2022 World Cup ticket and national pride, NFF’s ineptitude has cost the country over €12.2m (N5.6bn) bonus, which would have accrued to the football federation had the Super Eagles qualified for the 2022 World Cup.
In spite of desperate measures by the embattled NFF president to pacify angry stakeholders, the pressure on him to vacate his office has continued to increase leaving him in a quagmire.
Among the first to call for his resignation was a former Secretary General of the then Nigeria Football Association (NFA), Dr Tijani Yusuf, who said that in other countries, the NFF president would have resigned long ago.
In an exclusive interview with Daily Trust, the university don said “This is the time for the government to step in. In a normal situation, the first person who should have tendered his resignation honourably is the NFF president.
“If it were in other climes, Pinnick should have resigned immediately. But in Nigeria, people don’t resign; they are pushed out by force. I expect him to resign together with his board members. He has done his best but it is not good enough so let him resign immediately.”
In the same vein, the Guild of Sports Editors, the umbrella body of managers of sports in Nigeria’s major media organisations, called on members of the executive committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to resign from their positions. In a statement signed by the guild’s Vice President, Adekunle Salami, the editors stated unequivocally that “Nigerian football is bigger than any individual and should not be tied to the fortunes of anybody.
“The leadership of the current NFF has ridden on the back of Nigerian football to get to top positions in the world football governing body, FIFA, to the detriment of the game.
“Nigerian football now needs a total overhaul, from the lowest league to the national team and that can only happen when patriotic individuals, not self-seekers, are given the opportunity to manage the game. “We ask, therefore, that every executive member of the federation should resign honourably.”
On his part, a former Director of Sports in Katsina State, Alhaji Aliyu Kofar-Soro said the only way forward is for Pinnick and his ‘friends’ to resign and never contemplate contesting elections again to lead Nigerian football.
“All members of the NFF board beginning with Amaju Pinnick should resign over the failure of Nigeria to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.
“I doubt if they know the degree of pain that they have caused football-loving Nigerians. I almost collapsed that fateful day. You need to see how I was sweating right inside a fully air-conditioned room,” said Kofar-Soro.
A former member of the House of Representatives from Plateau State, Hon. Lumumba Adeh also blamed the latest sporting disaster on the mediocre leadership of those at the helm of affairs of Nigerian football and called for their resignation.
“My lamentation has been that they have killed Nigerian football. The standard has been falling each passing day. “It is unfortunate. Unless something dramatic is done, Nigerian football is on a cliff and the decline is going to continue unabated.
“The managers of Nigerian football have failed in all ramifications. The league, national teams and the development structures have all crumbled. We need to overhaul the system,” said the former NFF presidential candidate. However, a former Super Eagles player and former African Footballer of the Year, Victor Ikpeba said sacking Pinnick and his board members was not the solution as he suggested that they should be allowed to complete their tenure.
“I think the NFF has failed Nigeria and being a member of the technical committee, I think we have not played our role enough,” Ikpeba said on Monday Night Football Show on SuperSport.
“We cannot sack the board. We just have to wait for the system to take its course. Pinnick can re-contest if he wants to as the delegates have the right to reject him,” he said.
Past failures and calls for Pinnick to resign
This is not the first time Nigerians are calling on the NFF president to resign. It will be recalled that similar calls were made in the past when the Super Eagles failed back-to-back to qualify for the 2015 and 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
The male and female national teams also failed to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after the Golden Eaglets and the Flying Eagles could not qualify for their respective world championships.
On all occasions, aggrieved Nigerians called on the NFF president to resign. However, he refused to take the path of honour.
Summoned by Senate
As the pressure on Pinnick to resign continues to mount, the Senate has also summoned him to appear before it along with the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare, to explain why Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in spite of the huge funding by the government, individuals and corporate bodies.
The Committee on Youths and Sports Development is also to investigate the vandalisation of facilities at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium after the ill-fated match on March 29 and to assess the extent of damage to the stadium.
Third term ambition in jeopardy
Although he is yet to resign or denounce his third term ambition, many football stakeholders are of the opinion that the failure of the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2022 World Cup has nailed Pinnick’s ambition to stay on as NFF president.
It will be recalled that soon after he was re-elected in Katsina for a second term, Pinnick announced that when the present tenure, which will end in September expires, he would leave the stage for another Nigerian to continue.
“I made my decision even before earning the second mandate on 20th September 2018. I will not be running for the NFF Presidency again. I want to thank the members of the Congress, my colleagues on the Executive Committee, management and staff and stakeholders of the game for their support. I will be stepping off in 2022 to give another person the opportunity to lead Nigeria Football. That is the truth,” Pinnick, who is now a member of the FIFA Executive Committee, was quoted by This Day in 2020.
However, as days went by, it became an open secret that he had reneged on his vow and is plotting for a third term.
But Pinnick may be forced to drop his ambition because the first time Nigeria failed to qualify for the World Cup, which was Germany 2006, the then NFA Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima lost his plum job. It is against this background that most football stakeholders in Nigeria are of the opinion that the Super Eagles’ failure has put Pinnick’s third term ambition in serious jeopardy.
NFF apologises
As the heat on Pinnick and his board members rages, the football federation in a statement apologised to the government and Nigerian football fans over the failure of the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.
“There was nothing the team needed that was lacking. The government provided necessary support; the NFF put all logistics in place with the active support of the sports ministry and Nigerians turned out en masse to support the team. The truth is that we left nothing to chance. It is sad that things turned out the way they did.
“Sport is about winning and losing. Nobody wants to lose but sometimes it happens that way. We are quite sad that despite playing a draw in Kumasi, the Super Eagles could not win here in Abuja.
“We apologise unreservedly to the government and people of Nigeria for this non-qualification,” reads part of the statement.

Osimhen Honoured with Presidential Reception as Chelsea, Barcelona Circle for Nigerian Superstar
Osimhen Honoured with Presidential Reception as Chelsea, Barcelona Circle for Nigerian Superstar
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has hosted Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen and his Galatasaray teammates following the club’s latest Süper Lig victory.
This came even as top European clubs including Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Chelsea, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich circle for the Nigerian superstar.
The reception, held at the prestigious Presidential Complex in Ankara, celebrated Galatasaray’s continued dominance in Turkish football after securing their 26th league title—a feat that further cemented the club’s place as the most successful in Turkish football history.
Galatasaray extended their impressive run this season, finishing three points ahead of fierce rivals Fenerbahçe to clinch the championship.
The victory marked the club’s fourth consecutive Süper Lig crown, underscoring their complete control over domestic football in recent years.
If Galatasaray wins the Süper Lig title again next season, they will become the first club in Turkish football history to win five straight league championships—an unprecedented achievement that would separate them from every other team in the nation’s history.
The Nigerian forward played a decisive role in Galatasaray’s successful campaign, delivering impressive numbers despite spending some time on the sidelines due to injury.
Osimhen registered 15 league goals and five assists in just 22 Süper Lig appearances, proving his worth as the team’s most lethal attacking weapon.
The 27-year-old striker also made his mark on the European stage, contributing seven goals and three assists in 10 UEFA Champions League matches before Galatasaray’s elimination by Liverpool in the round of 16.
According to statistical analysis, Osimhen’s goal involvement this season stands at approximately one goal contribution per 90 minutes, with an expected assists (xA) output placing him above 87 percent of players in the Süper Lig.
His passing accuracy has been recorded at 74.35%, and he averages 1.38 key passes per game, creating significant scoring chances for his teammates.
Since moving to the Turkish champions, Osimhen has registered an impressive 57 goals and 16 assists in 73 appearances across all competitions. His pace, power, physical presence, and relentless pressing ability have made him one of Europe’s most coveted forwards.

Following their Süper Lig victory, the entire Galatasaray squad was honored with a reception by President Erdoğan. Osimhen and his teammates, all dressed sharply in black suits, were welcomed to the Presidential Complex in Ankara, where they exchanged handshakes with the Turkish leader in a ceremony that highlighted the significance of the team’s achievement.
Galatasaray President Dursun Özbek presented an official club jersey to President Erdoğan during the ceremony, a traditional gesture that symbolizes the bond between the club and the nation’s highest office.
During the event, Osimhen personally addressed the Turkish leader, expressing his gratitude for the invitation and speaking warmly about the reception. The Nigerian forward acknowledged the honour of being hosted at the presidential level, a rare privilege reserved for championship-winning teams.
Osimhen has enjoyed a highly productive and successful spell with the Turkish giants, winning three titles since his arrival at the club.
He joined Galatasaray on a permanent basis last summer following an initial loan spell from Napoli, signing a four-year contract that ties him to the club through to 30 June 2029.
The move came after a somewhat underwhelming final season in Italy, where his relationship with Napoli management had become strained.
Despite his contractual commitment to Galatasaray, Osimhen has continued to speak warmly about life in Istanbul and has not publicly pushed for a move. “Everything here is on another level.
Galatasaray fans show you their affection both at away matches and in your private life. They are the best supporters I have seen in my entire career, ” Osimhen previously said.
His connection with the passionate Turkish fanbase has made him a beloved figure at Rams Park, where his name is regularly chanted by thousands of devoted supporters.
At present, numerous European clubs are attempting to attract the striker away from Galatasaray.
The 27-year-old has been linked with moves to clubs including Chelsea, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich, but Galatasaray have remained committed to keeping the Nigerian forward.
However, the transfer speculation has intensified significantly in recent weeks. Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have emerged as serious contenders for Osimhen’s signature, with reports suggesting the French champions are preparing to meet Galatasaray’s massive €150 million valuation for the Nigerian striker.
PSG’s push is reportedly being driven by manager Luis Enrique, who is seeking a more physical and direct striker to lead his attack following the departure of Kylian Mbappé and the aging of other attacking options.
According to Spanish outlet Diario AS, Osimhen’s performances have drawn attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, with Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Juventus all monitoring his situation closely.
Turkish football analyst Zeki Uzundurukan has claimed that Galatasaray could be prepared to part ways with Osimhen for a fee in excess of €120 million, though the club must carefully assess whether they can adequately replace him.
The Nigerian’s current market value, boosted by his consistent goal-scoring record and Champions League experience, makes him one of the most expensive strikers in world football.
For now, Galatasaray remain firm on their valuation, while Europe’s top clubs continue to monitor a deal that could become one of the biggest transfers of the summer window.
The coming weeks are expected to provide greater clarity on whether the Nigerian striker will remain in Istanbul or embark on a new challenge at one of Europe’s elite clubs.
With the summer transfer window opening in June, speculation is expected to reach fever pitch as clubs begin formal negotiations. Despite the growing transfer noise, Osimhen has remained focused on celebrating Galatasaray’s latest triumph.
The presidential reception in Ankara served as a fitting capstone to a remarkable season, one in which the Super Eagles star proved once again why he is considered one of the best strikers in world football.
Whether he stays or leaves, his legacy at Galatasaray is already secure: a three-time champion, a fan favorite, and a player who delivered when it mattered most.

Aston Villa Win Europa League to End 30-Year Trophy Drought
Aston Villa Win Europa League to End 30-Year Trophy Drought
ISTANBUL — Aston Villa have won the Europa League, defeating Freiburg 3-0 in Istanbul courtesy of two stunning goals from Youri Tielemans and Emiliano Buendia, and an effort from Morgan Rogers, to capture their first trophy since the League Cup in 1996.
The emphatic victory at Besiktas Park also marks Villa’s first continental trophy since they lifted the European Cup in 1982, etching manager Unai Emery and his team into the club’s folklore. In front of nine of the 1982 European Cup heroes — including captain Dennis Mortimer and goalscorer Peter Withe — Villa wrote themselves another momentous chapter, fittingly playing in white shirts against a German team in red, just as their predecessors did against Bayern Munich 44 years ago.
The match remained cagey for much of the first half, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut opportunities. Freiburg, appearing in the first European final in their history, matched Villa’s early intensity. The opening spell was played at high tempo, with referee Francois Letexier moving quickly to contain the challenges as Philipp Treu, Emiliano Buendia, and Matthew Cash were all booked early. Nicolas Hofler sent Freiburg’s best first-half effort narrowly wide in the 17th minute.
But the game exploded into life four minutes before the interval. From a cleverly worked short corner routine, Morgan Rogers delivered a pinpoint diagonal cross towards Youri Tielemans, who had hung back from the penalty area. The Belgian midfielder timed his run perfectly and unleashed a thunderous right-footed volley from 15 metres into the bottom left corner, leaving Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu with no chance.
If Tielemans’ strike was spectacular, what followed in first-half stoppage time was sublime. After Freiburg failed to clear several corners, John McGinn shifted the ball to Emiliano Buendia on the edge of the area. The Argentine drifted to the right from his nominal left-sided position, got the ball out of his feet, and curled a majestic left-footed finish into the far corner — the last kick of the first half and arguably the goal of the tournament.

Any hopes of a Freiburg comeback were extinguished in the 58th minute. Buendia turned provider, advancing down the left before delivering a low, fast cross into the box. Morgan Rogers arrived at the near post and slid to convert first-time, making it 3-0 and sending the thousands of Villa supporters inside the Besiktas Stadium into rapturous celebration. Rogers and Buendia became the second set of teammates to both score and assist in a Europa League final, after Eden Hazard and Olivier Giroud for Chelsea against Arsenal in 2019. Rogers also became the youngest Englishman to score in a major European final since Steven Gerrard for Liverpool in the 2001 UEFA Cup final.
From that point, Villa managed the game expertly. Freiburg kept pushing but created little, while Villa’s defence — marshalled by a heroic goalkeeper — remained impenetrable. “You have ups and downs, but we fought through it in the end. We have got Champions League football and now this — it is so special. All these fans, it is indescribable,” Ollie Watkins said after the match. Freiburg coach Julian Schuster, whose side were contesting their first ever major European final, was left to rue the set-piece goals that proved decisive. “There is no satisfaction. We lost a final, and that outweighs everything. It is very painful because we came here convinced that we could win today. Set-pieces made the difference,” he said.
The extent of Emiliano Martinez’s commitment to the Villa cause emerged after the final whistle. The World Cup-winning goalkeeper revealed that he had fractured his finger during the pre-match warm-up but chose to play through the pain. “My finger broke during today’s warm-up! But it seems that all bad things bring good results for me,” Martinez told reporters after the match. “I’ve never broken a finger before. Every time I caught the ball, my finger bent in the opposite direction. But this is something I have to endure. I’m proud that I could defend for Villa.” Despite the injury, the 34-year-old Argentine made two crucial saves to preserve the clean sheet. After the match, Martinez was seen lifting manager Unai Emery onto his shoulders and even throwing himself into the stands to celebrate with the away fans.

The triumph further cemented Unai Emery’s status as the most successful manager in Europa League history. The Spanish tactician has now won the competition five times — three in a row with Sevilla (2014, 2015, 2016), once with Villarreal (2021), and now with Aston Villa. Emery has participated in six Europa League finals, losing only one. His overall record in the competition stands at 70 wins, 23 draws, and 16 losses from 109 matches, a win percentage of 64.2 per cent. He joins Giovanni Trapattoni, Jose Mourinho, and Carlo Ancelotti as the only managers to win five major continental titles.
Three-and-a-half years after walking into Villa Park and vowing he had joined to win trophies, Emery delivered on his promise. When he took charge in October 2022, the club sat just above the Premier League relegation zone on goal difference. In less than four years, he has guided Villa to three straight years of European football, Champions League qualification, and now a major European trophy. “Emery delivered on his promise,” wrote the BBC’s football reporter. “Six finals, five wins with the latest cementing a legacy at Villa Park which will last decades.”
Villa’s route to the final included knockout victories over Lille (3-0 aggregate), Bologna (7-1 aggregate), and fellow Premier League outfit Nottingham Forest (4-1 aggregate) before finishing the job against Freiburg. Until the semi-finals, Villa’s path ran smoothly, with seven wins from eight securing second spot in the league phase. John McGinn and Ollie Watkins are the Villans’ top goalscorers in the competition, both bagging five goals. Buendia has registered four goals and six assists in 12 appearances, and his goal in the final came in his 150th appearance for the club. Villa kept nine clean sheets in the competition, testament to their defensive organisation under Emery.
In Emery’s first full season in charge, he guided Villa into the Champions League with a fourth-place finish, before qualifying for this year’s Europa League following a sixth-place finish in 2024-25. They will return to the Champions League for the 2026-27 campaign.
As a result of their Europa League triumph, Villa have secured their place in next season’s Champions League group stage. However, there is an intriguing subplot regarding the number of Premier League representatives in Europe’s elite competition next season. The Premier League currently has five spots in next season’s Champions League. According to UEFA regulations, the Europa League winner qualifies directly for the Champions League the following season. If that team also finishes fifth in the Premier League, their Champions League spot based on league position is transferred to the team that finishes sixth.
Villa currently sit fourth in the Premier League table with 62 points after 37 rounds, three points ahead of fifth-placed Liverpool. In the final round of matches on May 24, Villa visit runners-up Manchester City while Liverpool host Brentford at Anfield. If Villa lose to Manchester City and Liverpool win against Brentford, both teams would finish on 62 points with Liverpool likely ranked higher due to superior goal difference. In that scenario, Villa would drop to fifth place. As Europa League champions, they would still qualify for the Champions League, and the fifth-place berth would be transferred to the team finishing sixth — currently Bournemouth, who are level on points with Brighton but ahead on goal difference. This means the Premier League could potentially have six representatives in the Champions League next season, with Bournemouth the biggest beneficiaries of this scenario.
Villa fans still in Istanbul received bittersweet news after the match: the trophy parade will be held in Birmingham on Thursday, meaning many supporters who travelled to Turkey will miss the homecoming celebrations due to travel logistics. The parade will begin on Branston Street in the Jewellery Quarter at 16:30 BST on Thursday, travelling through Sand Pits, Broad Street, and Centenary Square. The parade will have three open-top buses, with the lead bus dressed in blue carrying media, followed by a claret bus with the players. A third blue bus carrying staff will complete the convoy. A trophy lift will take place as the centrepiece of the parade.
The club explored the possibility of recreating the iconic 1982 European Cup celebrations by taking the players to Victoria Square, as well as erecting a stage in Centenary Square. However, due to ongoing works and safety concerns at Victoria Square, and advice from authorities around the risk of overcrowding at Centenary Square, both proposals were ruled out. The club apologised to fans still in Istanbul who would not be able to join in the celebrations. For those unable to attend in person, the parade will be broadcast live on VillaTV, as well as on YouTube and across the club’s social media channels. Aston Villa are covering all costs associated with the event. Several roads in Birmingham city centre will be closed from 10:00 until 22:00 BST, including Branston Street, Broad Street, Centenary Square, and surrounding areas.
The Europa League triumph secures Villa’s place in next season’s Champions League group stage — a competition in which Emery has already demonstrated his capabilities with a run to the quarter-finals in 2024-25, only halted by eventual champions Paris Saint-Germain. But beyond the tactical and financial implications, this victory represents something deeper: the restoration of Aston Villa as a force in European football. For a club that spent time in the second tier as recently as 2016 and 2019, and lost their previous four domestic finals before arriving in Istanbul, this triumph is the culmination of a remarkable rebuild.
“It rubberstamps the Emery era,” wrote The Athletic. “Marking an astonishing transformation from being just outside the Premier League relegation zone on goal difference when he arrived to playing three straight years in Europe and, now, becoming one of its champions.” For the Villa fans who have endured decades of disappointment, who watched their club plummet to the Championship and struggle for relevance in the Premier League, this night in Istanbul was redemption. As the players lifted the trophy and the claret and blue confetti rained down, 30 years of hurt finally came to an end.

Arsenal Clinch EPL Crown as Man City Stumble Against Bournemouth
Arsenal Clinch EPL Crown as Man City Stumble Against Bournemouth
Arsenal have been crowned Premier League champions for the first time in 22 years after Manchester City were held to a dramatic draw by Bournemouth on Tuesday night.
Pep Guardiola’s side needed a victory to cut Arsenal’s lead to two points and keep the title race alive until the final day of the season. But Bournemouth stunned the defending champions when Junior Kroupi fired the hosts ahead in the 39th minute.
Although Erling Haaland rescued a late equaliser deep into stoppage time, City failed to find the winning goal required to delay Arsenal’s coronation.
The result officially hands Mikel Arteta’s men their first league title since the famous 2003/2004 “Invincibles” campaign under Arsène Wenger.
Arsenal, who have finished runners-up in each of the past three seasons, will now head into Sunday’s final league match against Crystal Palace in celebratory mood as they seal a remarkable campaign.
The North London club has now won a 14th English top-flight title, trailing only Liverpool and Manchester United, who have 20 each.
Arteta’s side could yet crown the season with a historic double, having also booked a place in the UEFA Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain on May 30, where they will chase a first-ever European crown.
